What the Western World said about

    us

12 million people elected Morsi, so he is thefirst elected civilian President in Egypt, anyattempt to overthrow him is not democratic.

In the western more advanced countries andin democracies there are many moredemocratic and civilized ways of getting rid ofan ineffective leader

This is a coup d'tat by the military against anelected president.

Democracy is a form ofgovernment in which all

    eligible citizens participate

    equallyeither directly or

    through elected

    representativesin the

    proposal, development, andcreation oflaws. It

    encompasses social, economic

    and cultural conditions that

    enable the free and equal

    practice ofpolitical self-

    determination.

The people's understanding of democracy in the past was limited toelections, thinking that democracy is practiced just by having an electedgovernment through elections.

However, the formation of government might be the start of problems.Particularly in emerging liberal countries, from Eastern Europe, to Africa,Central Asia and the Arab world, instead of bringing positive changes, the

elected governments might make the situation worse. What happens in Egypt is a good example. After overthrowing Hosni

Mubarak, they elected for Mohammed Morsi. Unexpectedly, Morsipursued authoritarian rule, promoted Islamisation and rejected socialpluralism. He did not care about the people's feelings and intended toreconstruct ideology and social order, leading the country towards

differentiation and messing up economy. Such a government lacks humanity considerations, empathy andcompassion, having no difference with zombies.

  • 7/30/2019 Revolution Not a Coup 2013 Iman Bibars

    32/50

The Egyptians could no longer stand for a zombiegovernment and thus, they launched a second revolution tooverthrow it.

The experience of Egypt could be taken as a lesson foremerging democratic countries. Elected governmentsshould not think that they could do whatever they want

after winning the election and prioritise their own willswhile constructing a new dynasty.

A true democracy should emerge during elections and growafter elections. Elected governments should respect thepeople and in addition to paying back the people, they

should also fight for more supporters. With tolerance andgenerosity, the governments should patch up the cracksformed during elections and restore national unity.

  • 7/30/2019 Revolution Not a Coup 2013 Iman Bibars

    33/50

The Economist magazine recently described Mr. Morsis vision of anelectoral dictatorship a zombie democracy.

Such a democracy kind of looks like the real thing because it haselections, but in truth is no more than a hollow shell going throughthe motions. Without democratic governance, power sharing and

checks and balances on executive authority, the whole exerciseamounts to little more than a sham.

Like anyone who has watched any zombie film knows, the onlyreally effective way to get rid of such a travesty of humanityinvolves a blow to the head. If the people and military in Germany

or Italy of the 1930s had similarly understood the need to aim forthe head, elected leaders like Hitler and Mussolini might never haveremained in power as long as they did.

    What is democracy

The term originates from the Greek (dmokrata) "rule of the people", which was

coined from (dmos) "people" and (kratos) "power" or "rule" in the 5th century BCE

to denote the political systems then existing in

    Greek city-states, notably Athens;

    The origin : direct democracy

Several variants ofdemocracy exist, but thereare two basic forms, both ofwhich concern how thewhole body of all eligiblecitizens executes its will.

One form of democracy isdirect democracy, in whichall eligible citizens have

direct and activeparticipation in the decisionmaking of the government.

    Features of democracy

It has also been suggested that a basic feature ofdemocracy is the capacity of all voters to

participate freely and fully in the life of their

    society.[15]

With its emphasis on notions ofsocial contract andthe collective will of the all voters, democracy can

also be characterized as a form of political

collectivism because it is defined as a form ofgovernment in which all eligible citizens have an

equal say in the decisions that affect their lives.[16]

    The origin : direct democracy

Athenian democracytook the form of adirect democracywhere a legislative

assembly consistingof all Atheniancitizens. All eligiblecitizens were all tospeak and vote in theassembly, which setthe laws of the citystate.

Athenian democracy was not only directin the sensethat decisions were made by the assembled people,

but also the most directin the sense that the people

through the assembly, and courts of law controlled the

entire political process and a large proportion of

citizens were involved constantly in the public business.

Morsi had also drawn widespread criticismfor stacking the government with Muslim

Brotherhood members, and refusing to work

with members of other parties since his

election. The countrys economic woes have

    deepened under his leadership, with

    unemployment rates soaring, food prices

By Tuesday afternoon,Coptic Pope Tawadros II had

joined a meeting of militaryleaders, a top Islamic cleric, and secularist opposition

groups to discuss a politicalroad map after Morsispotential departure. TheCoptic popes presence atthe high-level gatheringmarked an unprecedented

level of influence for theCoptic populationanoften-persecuted minority.

The new popesinvolvement represented amarked difference from thelast Coptic leader, whospoke little about politics in

public life. Tawadros hasbeen far more vocal ininsisting religious minoritiesreceive fair treatment fromgoverning authorities and afuller place in public life.
