orientado por una certeza: la importancia que
el turismo y la cultura tienen en el desarrollo
económico.
Editar una publicación periódica de difusión tu-
rística y cultural del Estado de Veracruz, es ante
todo un reto de tan amplias proporciones como
la oferta que en la materia tiene el estado.
Nuestros objetivos son claros: contribuir al forta-
lecimiento de la identicación de Veracruz como
un destino turístico ofrecer un espacio de
promoción para las empresas integradoras del
sector turístico del Estado promocionar las
tradiciones y productos culturales, así como el
talento de los artistas del Estado y participar
en la formación de jóvenes ávidos e ingeniosos
interesados en la comunicación. Los contenidos
que ofrecemos se derivan de un trabajo guiado
por la esencial curiosidad, que a su vez no es
más que una sincera y humilde disposición a co-
nocer. Quienes contribuyen en esta publicación
se caracterizan por ofrecer plumas y miradas
frescas; nos proponemos que tanto textos como
imágenes, sean trabajos profesionales. Si bien
partimos de una certeza, desarrollamos nues-

estupendas bellezas naturales,
enorme riqueza histórica y cultu-
ral, sus tradiciones, la calidez de
su gente y su dinámico desarro-
llo comercial y turístico, está po-
sicionado como uno de los desti-
nos más atractivos de México.
El crecimiento del sector turismo resulta fundamental
para el progreso de nuestra entidad federativa, por
ello, realizamos acciones firmes que nos permiten con-
solidar ese posicionamiento, conservar la preferencia
de los turistas nacionales y extranjeros, captar la aten-
ción de quienes nos visitan por primera vez e impulsar
el turismo local.
La revista Feria, lo mejor de Veracruz, ha sido concebida
para acompañar este proceso, despertando el interés
de los lectores e invitándoles a recorrer personalmente
todo lo que sus páginas representan, los temas son tan
variados como interesantes. Así, mientras se difunden
las festividades, productos culturales y tradicionales,
se ofrece un espacio de promoción para las empresas
integradoras de los ámbitos referidos.

The State of Veracruz, with its wonderful natural beauties, enormous historical and cultural wealth, its traditions, the warmth of its people and its dynamic com-mercial and tourist development, is positioned as one of the most attractive destinies of Mexico. The growth of the tourism sector is fundamental for the progress of our state, for that reason, we conducted firm actions that allow us to consolidate that position, to conserve the preference of the national and foreign tourists, to catch the attention of those who visits us for the first time and to impel the local tourism.
The magazine Feria, the best of Veracruz, has been conceived to accompany this process, waking up the interest of the readers and inviting them to travel personally through everything what their pa-ges represent, the subjects are so varied as interesting. Thus, while the festivities, the cultural and traditional products are made known, a space of promotion is offered for the integrating com-panies of the referred scopes.

A 15 km al sur de la ciudad de Xalapa, nos
encontramos con la pintoresca ciudad de
Xico, con edificaciones del siglo XVII al XIX,
se pueden apreciar las plazas de los portales, de
la santa cruz y la parroquia de María Magdalena
con monumentales cúpulas y hermosas esculturas
místicas.
En esta ciudad es donde se festeja a la Santa
María Magdalena con mayor derroche y fervor,
tanto, que ha dado reconocimiento nacional como
internacional a esta región tan representativa del
estado de Veracruz.
En todo el mes de julio se realizan una serie de
procesiones, organizadas por 7 mayordomos* , el
principal se encarga de todo lo que acontece en
la iglesia y los otros seis se coordinan en todas las
actividades que esta esta conlleva. A lo largo de
estos eventos, la Santa es colmada de obsequios,
arreglos orales y mandas* .
Uno de esos obsequios es el vestuario que
orgullosamente una familia dona a la Santa para
que lo lleve puesto en esos días de alegría; se tiene
la costumbre de velar el vestido en la casa de la
familia donante, aquí los antriones reciben a sus
invitados con algún platillo que ellos mismos hayan
preparado, como tamales, atoles o champurrado.
15 km to the south of the city of Xalapa we found the colorful city of Xico with ancient constructions built along centuries XVII to XIX. You can appreciate the different piazzas (open squares) of “los por-tales” (vestibules) the Saint Cross and the Parish of Maria Magdale-na with monumental cupolas and beautiful mystical sculptures.It is in this city where Santa Ma-ria Magdalena is celebrated with the greatest fervor and in the most prodigal way, as much that it has given national and inter-national recognition to this so representative region of the sta-te of Veracruz.During all the month of July seve-ral processions are organized by 7 mayordomos* (stewards) the main one is in charge of everything what occurs in the church and the other six coordinate all the activities around this celebration. Throughout these events Santa Maria Magdalena is overwhelmed with gifts, floral flatteries and “mandas” (offers)*One of those gifts is the dress that a local family proudly donates to the Santa so she can wear it du-ring those days of joy. There is a custom of guarding the dress in the house of the donor family and they act as hosts to receive their guests with some food they have prepared, like “tamales” (corn flo-ur & meat), “atole” or “champurra-do” (corn flour drinks).

Anteriormente la Santa vestía un atuendo
diferente cada año, hoy en día, llega a vestir
una prenda por día, y es tanta la importancia
que le otorgan a esta mayordomía, que su
designación se hace con varios años de
anticipación.
Una actividad que usted disfrutará es la
“callejoneada”, en la que se recorren las
diferentes calles de Xico la noche del 18 de
julio, en la cual los asistentes y participantes
gustan de escuchar música romántica al estilo
de las rondallas más populares de la región.
Este evento dura toda una noche de caminata
bajo la luz de la luna y al amanecer, el
estruendo de los cohetes anuncia el inicio
de una de las jornadas más apreciadas por
los habitantes de la ciudad: la elaboración
de las alfombras, éstas son elaboraciones
artesanales realizadas con técnicas de
esténcil donde se colorea la avenida principal
con aserrín entintado de colores vivos, desde
la entrada al pueblo hasta la parroquia se
pueden apreciar bloques representativos
de las tradiciones artesanales, religiosas y
folclóricas de la ciudad.

During the early stages of this celebration the “Santa” wore a different dress every year but nowadays she wears a different dress per day, and is so much the importance that grants to this “mayordomía” (stewardship) that its designation is made with seve-ral years of anticipation.
An activity that you will enjoy is a night walk down known as “ca-llejoneada” through the different streets of Xico during the night of July 18th. The participants are pleased to listen to romantic mu-sic during the walk down in the style of the most popular “ronda-llas” (bands) of the region. This event lasts all night long walking under the light of the moon. At dawn the roar of the fireworks announces the beginning of one of the days more appreciated by the inhabitants of the city: the elaboration of the carpets, these are made by artisans applying techniques of esténcil*. The main avenue is colored with sawdust inked of bright colors from the town entrance to the parish and representative blocks can be appreciated: Artisans, religious and folklore traditions of the city.

Para esa misma noche, puede disfrutar de un paseo
donde se luce a la Santa elevada en un docel* o plata-
forma bellamente adornado con su nuevo atuendo;
este recorrido es encabezado por los mayordomos, el
párroco y grupos religiosos que llevan la festividad;
el pueblo se desborda de alegría invitando a los vi-
sitantes a ser partícipes de este acontecimiento que
enmarca las fiestas de la ciudad.
Guirnaldas de luces, fuegos pirotécnicos y bandas
de música popular prolongan la peregrinación para
dar término en la Parroquia donde se le espera para
ofrecerle un arreglo con cortinajes elegantes, flores
e iluminación.
El día 20 se realiza el levantamiento del arco oral que
mide aproximadamente 15 metros de alto y 4 de an-
cho, el cual enmarca la entrada a la parroquia; su ela-
boración dura aproximadamente cinco días, y cada
año tiene una representación bíblica diferente. Son
cientos de hombres los que colaboran en la elabo-
ración de este artesanal trabajo, y los mayordomos
responsables se encargan de invitar y suministrar los
alimentos y bebidas para animar a los participantes.
Todos ellos, desde muy temprano inician su camino
para recolectar la flor de soto, van desde Xico viejo,
Cuatitilán y las Carabinas hasta remontar al cofre, al
llegar, se realiza un ritual para pedir permi-
so a San Juan del Bosque para cortar
la or, se dice que si no se lleva a
cabo este ritual, la flor que se
recolecta sale amarilla e in-
servible para el arco.

During the same night you can enjoy a stroll where the San-ta with her new dress is elevated in a docel* or platform beautifully adorned. This route is headed by the “mayor-domos” (stewards) the parish priest and religious groups which lead the celebrations. The town people overflow it-self of joy inviting the visitors to join this event that frames the celebrations of the city. Garlands of lights, fireworks and popular bands prolong the peregrination until it finishes at the Parish where elegant curtains, flowers and bright illumination are offered to the Santa.On day 20 the rise of the floral arc is made, it measures approximately 15 meters high and 4 meters wide, which frames the entrance to the parish. Its elaboration lasts approximately five days, and every year has a different Bi-blical representation. Hundreds of men collaborate in the elaboration of this artisan work and the responsible butlers are in charge to invite and to provide food and drinks to animate the participants.
All of them very early in the morning initiate their way to collect the grove flower, they go from old Xico, Cuatitilán and the Carabinas until they reach the “Cofre de Perote” mountain, when they arrive a ritual is made to request per-mission to San Juan of the Forest to cut the flower. It is said that if this ritual is not carried out, the flower that is collec-ted has an unsuitable yellow color for the arc construction. When they return to Xico the Santa waits to give them her
blessing to initiate her route from the chapel of Cristo Rey until arriving at the Santa Maria
Magdalena Parish, where this gigantic arc will be placed. This peregrination
is accompanied by a multitude, fi-reworks and music culminating
with a blessing mass for this beautiful offering.
A contracultural encoun-ter without any doubt is carried out on day 22nd with the traditional xi-queñada*, direct heiress
of the celebrations of Pamplona, Spain, in which
brave bulls are released on the main street of the city.

Esta peregrinación es acompañada
por una multitud de gente, fuegos
pirotécnicos y música, culminando
con una misa de bendición de ésta
bella ofrenda. Un encuentro contra-
cultural es sin duda el que se lleva
a cabo el día 22, con la tradicional
xiqueñada*, heredera directa de
las estas de Pamplona, España, en
la que se sueltan toros por la calle
principal. Este día es el más popu-
lar por la adrenalina que genera en
sus visitantes que llegan a la ciudad
por millares, en la que usted puede
poner a prueba su valentía y su ve-
locidad.
La esta taurina se hace presente con
carteleras muy atractivas anuncian-
do a toreros reconocidos a nivel na-
cional e internacionalmente los días
que dura el festejo y que se refuerza
con el gusto por este estilo decora-
tivo en las casas, que lucen capotes,
banderillas, claveles.
A lo largo de esta festividad, la Santa
María Magdalena es colmada de
obsequios, arreglos florales y mandas.

This day is the most popular by the adrenalin that it generates in the visitors who arrive at the city by thousands. On this day you can put on trial your courage and your speed.The bullfighting celebration appears with very attractive bill-boards announcing bullfighters recognized at national and in-ternational levels during the ho-lydays. This celebration is rein-forced by a particular decorative style in Xico´s houses, using “ca-potes” (short cloak of bright color used by bullfigthers), “banderi-llas” (a small dart with a bannerol for baiting bulls) and “claveles” (carnations).The dances are a fundamen-tal part of these celebrations in which the colorful of dancer´s clothes can be observed, some in-teresting characters can be found along the dancers groups like the band dancers, the separated black man, Moors and Christians dancers, a bull with its sleeve and a little bell, the “meringuilla” (a man dressed like a woman who accompanies the dancers), the “negritos” of Papantla, the clown and the cattle tender.
The fireworks are also present, it is possible to appreciate in a ca-ravan up to 150 frames (known popularly like “toritos”) which move along the streets gi-ving color and joy to the streets accompa-nied of their cence-rreros* they use the sound of their bells to dance and racket.

Las danzas son parte primordial de estas
fiestas en las que se puede observar el colo-
rido de sus vestimentas, entre los personajes
interesantes que se encuentran en las danzas
se puede mencionar a los danzantes de ban-
da, el negro separado, danzantes de moros y
cristianos, el toro con su manga y campanita,
el payaso, la meringuilla (personaje vestido
de mujer que acompaña a los danzantes), los
negritos de Papantla, el payaso y el vaquero.
Los fuegos pirotécnicos también se hacen
presentes, se llegan a apreciar en caravana
hasta 150 armazones (conocidos popular-
mente como toritos) que recorren las calles
del pueblo dando colorido y alegría a estas,
acompañados de sus cencerreros,* que al
sonido de sus campanillas bailan llenos de
algarabía y se preparan para posteriormen-
te quemar los toritos en la explanada de la
parroquia.

No olvide llegar en punto de las 20:00 hrs,
pues en ese momento se puede apreciar
este espectáculo de luces multicolores
y sonidos de cohetes, a esto se le cono-
ce como la tradicional "Encamisada", en
el que los jóvenes corren detrás del toro
encendido haciendo siluetas con ramas en
mano o con su propia camisa.
Estas fiestas son una experiencia que no
debe dejar pasar, para vivir Xico es impres-
cindible asistir a ellas, donde la hospitali-
dad y la algarabía del pueblo se quedaran
tatuado en sus corazón.

En la pintoresca ciudad de Xico,
rodeada de exuberantes paisajes mon-
tañosos y con una neblina mágica, nos
esperan manjares de mesa dispuestos a embriagar
a cualquier visitante, tal es el caso del mole que es sin
duda alguna el platillo más representativo del muni-
cipio; con mezclas de diferentes variedades de chiles,
diversas semillas como ajonjolí, pepita de calabaza,
cacao, avellana, cacahuate, plátano, tortilla, espe-
cies como la canela, el anís, orégano y pimienta, su
inigualable y distintivo toque regional han hecho
de este platillo una receta popular y un souve-
nir obligado para sus visitantes, prueba de ello
es el mole de “La Tia Celsa”, que conserva su
sabor a través de las recetas tradicionales he-
redadas por sus antepasados, y que sumó a
su proyecto familiar tres magníficas recetas
más, que son un éxito por su propio valor
culinario: La Salsa de Chile Seco, La Salsa de
Cacahuate, y La Salsa de Barbacoa.
In the colorful city of Xico surrounded by overabun-dant mountainous lands-capes and with a magical
fog a collection of deli-cious delicacies wait for us
ready to seduce any visitor. This is the case of the deli-
cacy known as “mole” which is without any doubt the most re-
presentative specialty of the city; prepared with mixtures of dierent va-
riet-ies of chili peppers, diverse seeds like sesame, nugget of pumpkin, cacao,
countersink, peanut, banana, tortilla and species like the cinnamon, the anise, ore-gano and pepper, their matchless and dis-tinguishing regional touch has made of this deli-cacy a popular prescription and a forced souvenir for Xico´s visitors. Proof of this is the mole of “La Tia Celsa” (Aunt Celsa) which it conserves its avor through the traditional prescriptions inherited by its ancestors. Tia Celsa added to the family project three more magnicent prescriptions which are a success by their own culinary
value: the sauce of Dry Chile, the Sauce of Peanut, and the Sauce of Barbecue.

Otro guiso característico de la región es el Xonequi, ex-
quisito plato elaborado a base de caldo de frijol negro
tierno y bolitas de masa cocida, que guarda un aroma
y sabor inigualable que se obtiene de la planta que le
da el nombre al platillo, misma que es endémica de la
región.
En las cercanías, se pueden encontrar criaderos de tru-
cha arcoíris gracias a su clima templado-húmedo con
una temperatura promedio de 19°C y su gran potencial
hidrográco se logran con gran éxito, de manera que us-
ted podrá disfrutar de mas de 50 recetas diferentes des-
de picosas pasando por las agridulces y las aromáticas
en las que se prepara a tan delicioso pez.
Another delicacy characteristic of the region is the “Xonequi” an exqui-site plate based on a broth of tender black beans and small balls of cooked corn our which keeps a matchless aroma and avor obtained from the plant that gives the plate´s name and is endemic of the region.In the neigh-borhoods several rainbow trout hat-cheries can be found, thanks to the temper-humid climate of the region with an average temperature of 19°C and its great hydrologic potential the trouts are raised with great success, so you will be able to enjoy more than 50 dierent prescriptions to cook so delicious sh from “picosas” (hot & spicy) through bittersweet and the aromatic ones. One of the most rooted traditions along the families of Xico is to make bread; for them baking bread supports their traditions, and they are so proud of it that on last dates they participate in regional fairs and gas-

Una de las tradiciones más arraigadas entre
las familias de Xico es la labor panadera; para
ellos su elaboración es un elemento que en-
grandece la tradición, y lo llevan con tanto
orgullo que a últimas fechas participan en
ferias regionales y muestras gastronómicas,
tienen un pan diferente para recibir cada
época del año; en el mes de enero se elabo-
ran las exquisitas Roscas de Reyes, en Todos
Santos se preparan las Tortas y el tradicional
Pan de Muerto que por lo general son parte
de las ofrendas para los difuntos, en julio se
acostumbra a realizar el rico Pan de Huevo
y el Relleno de Requesón, y por supuesto el
pan blanco para rebanar que se acompaña
del típico champurrado.
Una de las panaderías con más prestigio y
tradición es la del “Tío Canito”, el cual con su
legendario horno de leña logran producir un
pan tan variado como exquisito, con un sa-
bor y colorido singular, variando sus recetas
con ingredientes esenciales como la canela,
vainilla, cacao, entre otros, que le otorgan un
sabor particular.

En la ciudad de Xico, las fiestas marcan la actividad social
y creativa del pueblo; la música predominante es la banda
de viento, música popular, música mexicana así como todo
tipo de corridos que alegran sus ferias y acompañan a las peregri-
naciones que rinden culto a su patrona Santa María Magdalena.
Representativas de la cotidianidad, las ar-
tesanías hacen alusión a objetos utilitarios
como canastas, bolsas, crucijos, bisutería,
platería, portarretratos, máscaras, bode-
gones en tres dimensiones tallados en
madera, centros de mesa y cuadros que
emulan a los danzantes de cada región
que compone la ciudad.

Las elaboraciones artesanales son del
uso de los mismos habitantes de Xico,
pues desarrollan sus propios atuendos
para sus fiestas, como sus máscaras ta-
lladas en madera y ropajes confecciona-
dos para sus danzas. También es de gran
reconocimiento artesanal la elaboración
de fuegos pirotécnicos que ensamblan
en estructuras de carrizo y las cuales son
utilizadas en una de las ceremonias más
importantes de la celebración patronal
de la ciudad.
Otra expresión artística muy representa-
tiva y colorida, es sin duda la artesanía
elaborada por el taller “Xicochimalco”,
propiedad del sr. Fortino Cortés, en el
que se talla la madera ofreciendo bellas
piezas elaboradas en cedro, caoba y oco-
te; todas estas maderas blancas otorgan
un bello acabado al natural cuando solo
son barnizadas y una buena impregna-
ción cuando son teñidas.

Cabe mencionar que la materia prima de las piezas ela-
boradas en este taller proviene de establecimientos le-
gales y son maderas de cultivos sustentables, por lo que
usted puede estar seguro de adquirir una pieza legal en
todos sus aspectos. Algunas de las piezas más popula-
res de su taller son los fruteros, marcos, relojes, estuches
para vino, carpetas, servilleteros y panaderas.
La popularidad de este taller los ha llevado a lugares
tan diversos como la Feria Internacional Artesanal en
el principado de Asturias en España, siendo los únicos
representantes del estado de Veracruz en dicho evento,
enorgulleciendo a la ciudad de Xico y a quienes trabajan
en el taller. Puede encontrar muchas otras artesanías en
la ciudad como una gran variedad de bisutería elabora-
da con grano de café, piedras semipreciosas y plata.
De esta última se elaboran bellas piezas de original dise-
ño y alta calidad, pues la comunidad Xiqueña ha apren-
dido el manejo de este metal noble que les permite ob-
tener mejores ingresos.

In this workshop the artisans sculpt wood offering beautiful pieces elaborated in cedar, ma-hogany and “ocote” these white wood grants a beautiful natural finished to all the handicrafts even if they are only varnished and guarantee also a good finis-hed when they are painted.The raw materials of the handicra-fts elaborated in this workshop come from legal establishments and the wood come from sustai-nable forests. For this reason you can feel sure to acquire a legal handicraft in all its aspects. Some of the most popular handicrafts of this workshop are the fruit bas-kets, picture frames, clocks, cases for wine, folders, napkin rings and bread baskets. The popularity of this workshop has taken their members to diffe-rent and diverse places like the International Artisan Fair celebra-ted at the principality of Asturias in Spain. This workshop has been the only representative of the Veracruz State in this event making the city of Xico proud of all who work in the workshop.You can find many other handi-crafts in the city like a great varie-ty of costume jewelry elaborated with coffee grains, semiprecious stones and silver.

colecciones de figuras realizadas por la Sra. Socorro Pozos,
artesana y propietaria. Heredera de la técnica de ensam-
blado de las hojas de maíz, la Sra. Socorro ha innovado la
misma al plasmar pasajes representativos de la comuni-
dad; también ha impartido clases en la Casa de la Cultura
de Xico fomentando el aprendizaje en la entidad de este
arte manual. Su trabajo ha logrado traspasar fronteras
mediante reportajes, artículos y entrevistas. En el año de
1992 fue merecedora de un reconocimiento y med-alla
por ser su actividad una de las más representativas de la
ciudad. Dentro de las obras que se pueden apreciar en el
museo se encuentran: el Proceso del café, la Fiesta Brava,
el Antiguo mercado de Xico y La catedral con su especta-
cular arco floral. Es de relevancia mencionar que la Sra.
Pozos no sólo se limitó al arte en totomoxtle, sino que
embelleció sus obras dándoles realce con cuadros pinta-
dos a mano, elaborados también por ella.
Que los artesanos han conformado una integra-
dora y entre sus proyectos a corto plazo está la
apertura de un mercado artesanal donde no sólo
habrá muestras artesanales, sino que el visitante
podrá participar en la elaboración de las mismas.

Silver is used also to elaborate beautiful, original design and high quality articles, the “Xiqueña” community has learned how to handle this noble metal which allows them to obtain a better income. An important enclosure located in this magnificent town is the Museum of the Totomoxtle*. In this place the “Xiqueñas” traditions are represented using figu-res elaborated with dry maize leaf attached to metal wire structures which are painted later by hand with vinyl paints.In this museum it is possible to appreciate a collection of figures -protected by display cases- made by Mrs. Socorro Wells a craftswoman and the museum´s owner. Heiress of the technique to assemble the maize leaf Mrs. Socorro has innovated this technique to represent local community events; she has given classes in the “culture´s house” of Xico fomenting the learning of this manual art. Her work has managed to cross borders by means of news articles and interviews. In the year of 1992 she deserved a recognition and a medal for her activity one of the most representative of the city.The works of art which can be appreciated in the museum are: the Process to obtain coee, the Bullghting Celebration, the Old market of Xico and the Cathedral with its spectacular oral arc. It is of relevance to mention that Mrs. Wells not only worked in the “totomoxtle” art she also embellished her works with paintings ela-borated by herself also. Ciudad de paso, ciudad de niebla,
Xalapa siempre ha detentado una
magia particular que atrapa a quien se
acerca a conocerla. Sus orígenes son imprecisos,
se sabe que al llegar los conquistadores españoles
ya existía un asentamiento y se trataba de un lugar
de paso, un sitio de referencia y descanso para los
mensajeros que, en ese entonces, recorrían el territorio
del imperio mexica llevando y trayendo noticias.
Poco ha cambiado desde entonces su naturaleza: Ciudad
de intercambios y de estancias fugaces; Xalapa, hoy en día,
sigue albergando una población flotante, mayormente com-
puesta por estudiantes que se quedan a deambular por sus
calles retorcidas y caóticas durante el tiempo que duran sus ca-
rreras, para luego partir y llevarse de ella un recuerdo inmerso
en bruma.
Conozco personas que han venido a vivir a esta ciudad sólo por la
niebla. En ciertos días, de una manera fantasmal por inesperada, la
niebla baja desde las laderas del cercano Cofre de Perote, inundando
todo el espacio visual hasta ser una presencia tangible.
Las calles se llenan entonces de sombras, perfiles recortados que ca-
minan anónimos y uno mismo se pregunta si estará yendo hacia donde
quiere ir, o si por el contrario, estará extraviándose entre las venas retor-
cidas de la ciudad, que mucho tienen de laberinto.
Ciudad poco apta para los amantes del orden y la cartografía precisa,
donde una calle siempre puede desembocar a un lugar inesperado y la
lógica de las líneas rectas o paralelas puede llevar al forastero a una larga
búsqueda de su destino.

mándole La Atenas Veracruzana a princi-
pios del siglo XX.
Si comparar una ciudad antigua con una
moderna, una ciudad bañada por el sol
con una bañada por la niebla parece ex-
cesivo, el apelativo no es gratuito: Xalapa
tiene una agitada vida cultural, varios ca-
fés (algunos encantadores, el tipo de lugar
a donde uno siempre vuelve), conciertos de
Jazz, exposiciones de pintura, escultura y fo-
tografía, muestras de cine, presentaciones de
la Orquesta Sinfónica de Xalapa, una de las
mejores del país, son algunos de los eventos
que pueden encontrarse sin dificultad, sema-
na a semana en los diversos sitios que, a este
propósito, hay repartidos por los lugares más
diversos aunque, como es usual, se aglutinen
en el centro.
Los estudiantes son partícipes activos de esta
vida cultural. Además, la ciudad entera es como
una ciudad universitaria puesto que los campus
de la Universidad Veracruzana se encuentran es-
parcidos a lo largo y ancho de la urbe.

A Short-time stay city, city of fog, Xalapa has always kept some particular magic that catches anyone who gets to meet it. Its origins are uncer-tain. It’s known that, when Spa-nish conquerors arrived, a sett-lement already existed. It was a stop and go place, a pla-ce of rest and reference for the messengers that, in that time, tra-veled across the Mexica’s empire territory carrying news. Little has changed since. Xalapa is still a city of exchange and fleeting staying. In current days Xalapa keeps sheltering a floating population consisting mostly of stu-dents that prowl in its twisted and chaotic streets as long as their studies last, to then leave and take a memory drenched in mist. I know people that came to live to Xalapa only because of the fog that embraces the city most of the year. Some days, in an unexpected ghostly way, the fog climbs down from the nearby Cofre de Perote’s pick, ooding every visual space until its presence beco-me tangible. Streets ll then with shadows and shapes that walk anonymous, and you wonder if you are going where you really want to go or, on the contrary, you’re get-ting lost in the twisted veins of the city.Xalapa isn’t the place for those who appre-ciate the convenience of a well-traced streets’ system, because here a street can come out to an unexpected place and the logic of straight and parallel lines can take the outsider to a long search of his destination.

Veracruz comienza en la Huasteca Alta, con espléndi-
dos paisajes, lagunas, esteros e islas, bellezas naturales
que la hacen pródiga en actividades como pesca, gana-
dería y agricultura, y que sirvieron de inspiración para
que surgiera el Huapango o Son Huasteco, tradicional-
mente interpretado con falsete y entonado con violín,
jarana, quinta y arpa.
REGION HUASTECA ALTA: Tradición a ritmo de huapango
Sus orígenes se remontan al año 2000 a.C, cuando gru-
pos mayas emigraron hacia la zona norte de Veracruz
y floreció la civilización huasteca. La región es atracti-
va no sólo por sus numerosos recursos naturales que
favorecen la explotación petrolera, de gas natural y
generación de energía eléctrica, sino también por su
desarrollo portuario y deportivo.
REGION HUASTECA BAJA: Un Paraíso por descubrir
HIGH HUASTECA REGION: Tradition to the beat of huapango Veracruz begins in the High Huasteca Region, with splendid landscapes, natu-ral lagoons, matting and islands, natural beauties which make this region prodi-gal in activities like fishing, breeding of cattle and agriculture, this natural beau-ties served as inspiration to create the Huapango or Son Huasteco, traditional music interpreted with falsetto and in-toned with violin, jarana, fifth guitar and harp.
LOW HUASTECA REGION: A Paradise to discover
Its origins go back to year 2000 A.C when Mayan groups emigrated towards the North zone of Vera-cruz and the huasteca civilization bloomed. The region is attractive not only by its numerous natural resources which favor the oil and natural gas extraction and the ge-neration of electrical energy, but also by its harbor and sports de-velopment.

REGION TOTONACA:Tierra de los hombres que vuelanLa producción de vainilla le ha dado fama mundial a la re-
gión, al igual que el ritual de los Voladores de Papantla y la
zona arqueológica El Tajín, uno de los centros políticos y
religiosos más bellos y mejor conservados de Mesoamérica.
Juntos reflejan el profundo sentido de la palabra “totona-
ca”, que significa “tres corazones”.
La Región ofrece múltiples posibilidades que van desde
disfrutar las numerosas expresiones culturales que tienen
lugar en la llamada Atenas Veracruzana, entrar en contac-
to con las antiguas culturas mesoamericanas y la tradición
colonial, hasta sentir la adrenalina que provocan activida-
des ecoturísticas como descensos en río, rappel, tirolesa,
ciclismo y montañismo en el Cofre de Perote.
REGION CAPITAL: Encuentro de Cultura y Aventura
Reviva el pasado colonial de sus ciudades entre edificios y
puentes llenos de historia, y déjese sorprender por su sin-
gular relieve que alterna sierras, barrancas, cavernas y valles
con numerosos cursos de agua, todo a los pies del majes-
tuoso Pico de Orizaba, el volcán más alto del país.
REGION LAS MONTANAS: Hermosas Vistas y Ciudades Coloniales
Las amplias llanuras costeras y las numerosas barras y es-
teros de la región, la hacen un lugar ideal para practicar
actividades acuáticas, mismas que pueden conjugarse con
disfrutar de su pasado totonaca en zonas arqueológicas
como Paxil, El Cuajilote y Vega de la Peña.

REGION PAPALOAPAN:Caudal de Belleza y TradiciónEl Son Jarocho es la vida de Veracruz, cauce en el que con-
vergen su pasado indígena, español y africano. Nació de
instrumentos de cuerda y percusiones, del alma de poeta
de sus decimeros y el ingenio de trovador de sus repentis-
tas. No es coincidencia que en la tierra que eligió el mú-
sico poeta Agustín Lara para renacer, la vida transcurre
entre paisajes y colores que inspiran, bordados que dan
vida a los trajes de jarocha y la naturalidad de la alegría.
REGION LOS TUXTLAS:Exuberante y MágicaLa posición geográfica de la región y sus diversas altitudes, que
van desde el nivel del mar hasta los 1,700 msnm hacen que la sel-
va más septentrional del mundo tenga una gran variedad de con-
diciones microclimáticas que alientan la existencia de una amplia
variedad de flora y fauna. Basta decir que incluye reservas que
registran más de 2,368 especies de plantas vasculares y el 50% de
las aves del país. En esencia, la enorme biodiversidad de la zona,
sus lagunas profundas, impresionantes caídas de agua y exube-
rante vegetación la hacen un paraíso tropical que a diario brinda
un espectáculo natural que quita el aliento a sus visitantes.
REGION OLMECA: Historia y ProgresoCuna de la civilización más antigua de Mesoamérica, la Región
Olmeca conserva su historia y amalgama tradiciones con de-
sarrollo económico e industrial. Prueba de lo anterior es Coat-
zacoalcos, que hoy es una moderna ciudad mercante gracias a
la industria petrolera y a su puerto de altura y cabotaje.
