Respondents comment – Thank you for your letter informing me of the above review. We are happy for Crayford Baptist Church to continue to be used as a polling station and have no other comments to offer.
Electors: 1142 Recommendation: Current arrangements considered satisfactory. No changes proposed.
The only concern we had as East Wickham councillors was the confusion as to the entrance to the polling station at Welling School. The postcode on the polling card caused some people to go to the Elsa Road entrance, when in fact they needed to go in from Berwick Road. Could it be made clear for future elections that the polling station can only be accessed from Berwick Road?
At the last election in May we ran into some older residents who had gone to the wrong place and it was a long walk round to get to the correct entrance. We think it may have led to some voters not casting their vote.
Thank you.
Electors: 2883 Recommendation: Officers from Electoral Services team always provide signage to put up along Elsa Road informing electors to use the entrance in Berwick Road. The poll card also states the entrance to the polling station is via entrance in Berwick Road. For all future elections the post code on the poll card will be changed so that it is relevant to the Berwick Road entrance. Current arrangements considered satisfactory. No changes proposed.

Comments received from two respondents: Respondent 1: I am emailing in response to your letter regarding the Review of Polling Districts and Polling stations 2019. I recognise that the borough needs to have a certain amount of Polling Stations to enable all Bexley residents to be able to vote locally however we are a school, and this means we have 1 less teaching day than other schools in the borough when we host a Polling Day at the School.
Electors: 2663 Recommendation: Current arrangements considered satisfactory. No changes proposed.
Old Bexley & Sidcup
The other significant issue we have is parents taking holiday in term time which we are addressing as a school through our Attendance Policy however shutting the school for Polling Days does give out the message to parents that it is OK to miss days off school and often during weeks with a Polling Day parents will use this to take a week’s holiday which severely impacts on our Whole School Attendance data. This will be significantly more likely this year as our Polling Day is on Thursday 7th May followed by Friday 8th May Bank Holiday. I am also concerned that due to the ongoing political situation regarding Brexit there is a possibility of a snap Parliamentary or Referendum being called at any time which would mean another school day lost for our children. With the pressure on schools
to meet Government floor standards and targets missed days off school is an additional pressure put onto my teachers who are a dedicated, hard-working team of people. I look forward to your response. Respondent 2: Please stop using schools ! It is hypocritical or schools to be closed for polling, but Parents get into trouble for taking children out of school ! It’s a problem for working parents who cannot rely on family nearby to cover childcare outside of school holidays.

Comments received from 1 respondent : Following up on our recent conversation, The Bothy, in the grounds of St James Church, is a small hall that seat 35 people and has facilities including a kitchen and rest room. I think it will be ideal as a polling station especially as it’s not a large polling district in the North Cray part of St Mary’s and St James Ward. Let me know your thoughts.
Electors: 725 Recommendation: Officers from the Electoral Services team visited The Boffy, St James Church and having looked at the location, disabled access, parking facilities and the electorate, The Boffy is deemed to be a suitable alternative polling station. The location of the Boffy, St James will serve a higher percentage of the electorate in polling district SS2S. Therefore, it is the RO’s proposal that polling station SDA Riverway church is replaced with The Boffy, St James Church. For future elections, all information on poll cards and maps will be amended with this change and an additional

letter will be sent to all electors in SS2S.

Respondent comments – With reference to your letter 23 August, which was handed to me last Sunday, so far as I am aware, members of our church who live and vote in our parish are very satisfied with the current arrangements, i.e. level access, good parking and little delay in voting. They would be using polling station at Baldwyn’s Park Baptist Church.
