INSTALLATION CONSIDERATIONSThe control products described in this cata-log have been designed, tested and manu-factured in accordance with a wide variety ofstandards including but not limited to thoseissued by UL, CSA, NEMA and IEC. These .standards typically apply to the control prod-uct as a component and not the installationor use of the product. It is the responsibilityof the end user of the control product tomake sure each installation complies with allof the applicable safety requirements, laws, regulations, codes and standards (someexamples of which are the N.E.C., the C.E.C.
and OSHA regulations). Note that localauthorities may impose further, jurisdictionover each installation. When in doubt, con-sult with the local inspection authorities.Unless otherwise specified, the control prod-ucts described in this catalog are designedto operate under "usual service conditions"as defined in NEMA Standards Publication—Part ICS 1 - 1 0 8 . Open type devices areintended for installation in enclosures thatprovide environmental protection as neededfor the specific application. See page 14 fordefinitions of the various enclosure types.
PERFORMANCE DATAWhere given in this catalog, performancedata should only be used as a guide to deter-mine the suitability of the product for anapplication. The data may be the result ofaccelerated testing or elevated stress levelsunder controlled conditions. The user musttake care in correlating this data to actualapplication or service conditions.UL and CSA—File Numbers and GuideCard Numbers
Most control equipment listed in this catalog isdesigned, manufactured and tested in accor-dance with the relevant UL and CSA standardsas listed in the table below.

Heavy Duty StartersSize 0-4 Starter Features, Application
General
Size 0-13/«ESP100 Solid State Starter
ESP100 Solid State Overload RelaysThese standard features of the ESP100provide Extra Starter Performance.• True phase loss protection; trips
within 3 seconds.• High accuracy trip curves; ± 2%
repeat trip accuracy.• Ease of use. Mount, wire, and set FLA• Overload is self protected against
short circuits.• Overload is self powered and
requires no hard wiring or separatepower source.
• Simple, versatile adjustment; mini-mum of 2:1 FLA adjustment range.(4:1 in lower FLA ranges.)
• Heaterless construction minimizesenergy costs and the costs of cabinetventilation or cooling.
• Class 20 protection is standard. Class10 and 30 protection are available.
• Provides motor protection for50/60 Hertz.
ESP1QO FLA Adjustment Dial—Set the adjustment dial on the overload to theFLA of the motor.
ESP100 starters combine the ruggedcharacteristics of a NEMA rated con-tactor with a solid state overload whichprovides phase loss protection. Itoffers the industrial user greater pro-tection and added life for motors inheavy duty applications. The inherentbenefits of the ESP100 result in costsavings as well.Self-Reset VersionThe self-reset starter is ideal forcranes, hoists, and other applicationswhere the controls are mounted in aremote location that may be difficult toaccess. The NC overload contactopens for a short duration (50-75msec) on an overload or phase losscondition The unit provided can beapplied in one of three ways:1. Three wire control circuit usingFurnas Size 0-4 contactor. The self-reset overload can be retrofitted andapplied in a three wire control applica-tion as a remote reset overload with-out additional components or wiring.2. PLC—(assuming initiating starter coilvia PLC) Timers and counters can beused to determine time betweenrestarts and maximum number ofrestarts.3. Use NC overload contact to drop outa control relay. See page 475 for wiringdiagrams.
Each overload is precisely calibrated andlabels are individually laser printed andthen custom applied for each particularcalibration.
Typical Number of Heater ElementsNeeded for Alloy Overloads
• No need for heater coilselection or installation.
• No heater elements to stock.• More precision.
Size 0-1%Melting Alloy Starter
Melting Alloy starters are standardTogether with the proper heater ele-ments, these starters help to provide protection to motor windings from harmfulcurrents. These currents damage themotor winding through overtemperatui'The conditions are often caused by ovcloading the motor, sustained low voltac;.or stalled rotor.Melting Alloy overloads include a tripindicator and manual test feature. Anisolated NO or NC contact is available.

Bimetal starters, together with theproper heater elements, help to provideprotection to motor windings fromharmful currents. These currents dam-age the motor winding through Movertemperature. The conditions areoften caused by overloading the motor, sustained low voltage, or stalled rotor.Bimetal overloads are convertible frommanual to automatic reset. Heaters canbe selected as standard class 20 orquick trip class 10. Starters can be fac-tory ordered with a NO/NC (SPOT)Form C contact.

Heavy Duty Contactors and StartersControl Ratings______________________
Technical
Max HP Plugging and JoggingRatings shown are for applicationsrequiring repeated interruptions ofstalled motor current or repeated clos-ing of high transient currents encoun-tered in rapid motor reversal, involvingmore than five openings or closings perminute and more than ten in a tenminute period, such as plug stop, plug reverse or jogging duty. Ratingsapply to single speed and multi speedcontrollers.Continuous Amp Ranting, Service LimitThe service limit current represents themaximum RMS current, in amperes, which the controller may be expectedto carry for protracted periods in normalservice. At service limit current ratings, temperature rises may exceed thoseobtained by testing the controller at itscontinuous current rating. The trip cur-rent of overload relays or other motorprotective devices shall not exceedthe service limit current ratings of thecontroller.Ballast Type, Tungsten and OtherDischarge Type Lighting LoadsThe characteristics of ballast type lampsare such that it is not necessary toderate Class 40 contactors below theirnormal continuous current rating. Class
NEMA Electrical/Mechanical Ratings
40 contactors may also be used for con-trolling tungsten and other dischargetype lighting loads, Class 40 contactorsare specifically designed for such loadsand are applied at their full rating aslisted in the Class 40 section.Resistance Heating LoadsRatings apply to Class 40 contactorswhich are employed to switch the loadat the utilization voltage of the resis-tance heating or light producing ele-ment with a duty which requirescontinuous operation of not more thanfive openings per minute.Capacitor Switching KVA RatingWhen discharged, a capacitor hasessentially zero impedance. For repeti-tive switching by a contactor, sufficientimpedance should be connected inseries to limit inrush current to notmore than 6 times the contactor ratedcontinuous current. In many installa-tions, the impedance of connectingconductors may be sufficient for thepurpose. When switching to connectadditional banks, the banks already onthe line may be charged and can supplyadditional available short circuit currentwhich should be considered whenselecting impedance to limit thecurrent.
The ratings for capacitor switchingabove assume the following maximumavailable fault currents:
Size 2-3: 5,000 AmpRMS Sym
Size 31/2-5: 10,000 AmpRMS Sym
Size 6: 18,000 AmpRMS Sym
If available fault current is greater thanthese values, connect sufficient imped-ance in series as noted in the previousparagraph. The motor ratings in the table below areNEMA standard ratings and apply onlywhen the code letter of the motor isthe same as or occurs earlier in thealphabet than is shown in the tablebelow.Motors having code letters occurringlater in the alphabet may require alarger controller.
