It was a clear sunny Tuesday morning after Mass, and someone had heard there was a plane crash in New York. We were gathering for our weekly staff meeting at Our Lady of the Lake before I would head out to visit Mom. Our office manager, Annette, began to get frantic when she saw that not one, but two airplanes had crashed into the World Trade Center. We turned on the TV and began to change our plans – and our outlooks. Instead of a meeting, we prayed together for about 10-15 minutes and then decided we’d open our facilities for an impromptu prayer service that very evening. But, having heard that another church in town was already announcing one, decided we would all meet at the Edinboro United Methodist Church instead. I remember having lunch with Mom and being overwhelmed and paralyzed by the magnitude of what was happening on September 11, 2001. The church later was full – standing room only – with people who all felt sick, angry, shocked, and sad. All the local pastors took part in the prayer service. Four of us (friends) had tickets to the musical “Lion King” in Toronto that Friday – which of course went by the boards. Thankfully, our money was refunded. We hosted a special Holy Hour – as did most every parish in the Diocese – that evening instead. Also, the Masses that weekend (Sept 15/16) were packed with many who didn’t always come. People were looking for answers and for companionship in this most uncertain time. Atlantic magazine has a twentieth anniversary story of one family – whose son went to the Twin Towers that morning for a job interview and whose body (and wallet) were miraculously recovered. How did they cope? How are they coping? Lisa Adams (television journalist) stopped by to ask some questions last week about what we all have experienced and learned subsequently – particularly as a faith response. No matter how awful – or evil – we know God is there to be with us, walk with us, grieve with us. It happened at Calvary. It happened at Bethlehem, when Herod decreed the destruction of all baby boys two years or younger. It happened in Rome when men and women were fed to the lions. It happened twenty years ago, and it happens today. God is with us through it all. Fr. John

Dear Brothers and Sisters in Christ,

I ask for your support of the Catholic Education Collection being held the weekend of September 18-19.

This collection supports lifelong education and faith formation opportunities throughout our diocese. Half of the funds raised remain in your parish The other half provides funds for ministry and leadership training, technology support, and tuition assistance for families attending Catholic schools.

Thank you for your generous support.

Be assured of my prayers for you and your family. With every best wish, I remain,

Sincerely yours in Christ,

The Most Reverend Lawrence T. Persico, JCL Bishop of Erie

God Knows and Understands

By Mary E. Herrington

Sometimes we feel so weary As we go from day to day

We wonder if we’ll make it, Will we ever find our way.

But yet we keep on trudging Down, what seems an endless road

And soon we hear God whisper. “Take My hand I’ll share thy load.”

And then all the many things That we thought we could not do

Are soon so far behind us As God helped to see us through.

It really is amazing How the Lord doth understand When we are weak and weary And we reach to take His hand.

For He, too, once was weary From a heavy load you see, When He bore a world of sin

On the cross at Calvary.

He, too, knew of temptation, Loneliness and deep despair, Remember?...in the garden

When He knelt alone in prayer.

He is God of mercy, Thus filled with unending love, Waiting to help His children,

Watching from Heaven above.

A Family Perspective

If commitment is the choice we make to give up other choices, then it is about “losing ourselves”. If we try to be independent from others by “saving ourselves”, we end up lonely and alone. Happiness is found in commitments. The gospel is true: We save our life by losing it!

Child Protection and Creating Safe Environments

Diocesan Child Protection Policies: The Diocese of Erie has policies and procedures in place to address the national problem of child abuse and to aid in maintaining safe environments. The main components are: screening and training all who work with minors and reporting all suspected child abuse. The diocese is committed to promptly reporting any suspected child abuse directly to ChildLine or law enforcement. The diocese requires yearly safe environment training of our children, youth and parents regarding touching-safety and safe environments. Visit https://www.eriercd.org/childprotection/ to read the policy and learn what the diocese requires for all personnel who work with children and youth in parishes/schools/agencies.
