5.0 DETAZLS

The plan" waste processing ecuipment (deminera'"ers, evaporators, etc.) a e designed to process wastes in thechemical and physical orms wnich exist in the operatinglant svsiems. Plane admin'strat've procedures dictate the

plant svstem's chemical ooerating oarameters, and routinesampling of these systems insu e that all parameters arekept with'n the ooerat'ng Limits. Other procedures are ineffect wh'ch -"ever." materials wh'ch effect waste systemoaeration from enter'ng these systems.

Zf alternate or additional ecuipment such as filters, demineralizers, incinerators, etc. are reauired or wasteprocessing they will be operated by the ph'osophyestablished in this manual to assure that the ='nal formsmeet all the regulations =or shipoing and bu ial. Pr'or tothe operat'on of anv alternate eau'pment, procedures will bewritten and approved.

A. Licuid Processina And Solid f'cat.onThe waste evaporators are operated by the instruct'onsgiven in one of the ollowing olant procedures:

General Recuirem nts

The PCP shall be used to verify the solidification of atleast one representative test specimen rom at leas everytenth batch.o each tvpe o wet adioactive waste (e.g.evaporator bot"oms, bor''c acid solution). For the purposes of the PCP a batch is defined as the amountin the HZ~ST at the time of sampling p ior to pumping to thesolidifica"ion equipment.

I anv test specimen fails to sol'di y, the batch under testshall be suspended unt'l such time as add'tional testspecimens can be obtained, alternative solid'ficat'onparameters can be determined in acccrcance with the ProcessControl P ocram, anc a subsecuent t;est ve '='essolidi ica" ion. Sol''cation o= the batch mav then beresumed using the alternate solid'ication parametersde termined.

Xf the init'al test specimen from a batch of waste fails toverify solidific tion then representative test specimensshall be collected from each consecutive ba"ch o= tne sametype of waste unt'' three (3) consecutive initial testspecimens demonstrate solidi 'cat'ons. The p"ocess shall bemodified as required to assure so'idi 'c tio~ of subsequentbatches of waste.

For, high activ'tv waste, where the handlinq o= samples couldresult in personnel radiation exposures which areinconsistent with the ALMQ. Principle, representativenonrad'oac"ive samples wil be procuced and tested. Thesesamples should be as close to ne actual wast in. thei"phvs'cal and chemica'roper"'s as possible to ver'fvproper sol'd'cation: parameters.
