The Messenger St. Peter Lutheran Church – April 2017

From the Interim Pastor

The Gospel reading for the first Sunday in April comes from John chapter 11 and it tells the

story about Jesus raising Lazarus from the dead. This is a marvelous story of faith. It is also the

last of the signs that John told about in his Gospel story inviting people to believe in Jesus as

the Messiah. It is also the straw that broke the camel’s back, because from that time on the chief

priests and Pharisees found it necessary to put Jesus to death.

They believed that only God could have the power over life and death and they believed that

Jesus was not God and so they sought to destroy him. And from fear and lack of faith, God

showed us where to find hope. With Jesus’ surrender to death on the cross, God showed us

where to find life.

The words that Jesus spoke to Martha are true when he said, “I am the resurrection and the

life, whoever believes in me though they die, yet shall they live, and whoever lives and believes

in me shall never die.”

Then Jesus asked Martha if she believed this and she replied, “Yes, Lord I believe that you are

the Christ, the Son of God, he who is coming into the world.”

An important part of the rhythm of the story of faith is to walk through Lent and hear and see

the suffering and death of Jesus the Christ. This is what prepares us for Easter and helps us to

open our eyes like Mary and the disciples and to see his resurrection and to believe that new life

is the gift he gives.

As part of our preparation for this….

1. First communion will be celebrated on Palm Sunday, April 9th

2. Maundy Thursday service will begin at 7pm on April 13th

.

3. The Community Lenten service will also be at 12 noon, Thursday April

6th

and the Community Good Friday Service at 12 noon on Friday,

April 14th. These services are held at Trinity United Methodist.

4. The Good Friday Service at St. Peter will be on Friday at 7pm on

April 14th.

5. We have two services on Easter at St. Peter: 7:30am and 10am with

breakfast served in between the two services.
