I learn about love when the prayers I say in the mystery of the rosary are dedicated to the needs of others rather than my own needs. In the first sorrowful mystery, try praying for those in some kind of agony. Maybe it’s sickness, or stress, a problem that’s tough to solve, or a difficulty in the family. As the Holy Spirit brings a person to mind, name them and offer a prayer. Ask that their agonies be lightened, their heart be comforted, that angels be sent to bring that comfort, and that the Holy Spirit bring His peace to them. That may sound great to you, and you’re ready to try it. You’re going to pray for a special someone every day and bring them great blessing. Well, there’s still a way to go. You may be surprised how this simple way of praying changes you. You. Not just them. You. You see them with more compassion. And often, you see changes in them, too. Still, you’re not done. If you’re truly living love in this prayer, it prompts you to act. Just as true faith is always accompanied by works, (James 2:26*) prayer of the heart brings you to seek what action is needed to bring about comfort or relief without interfering or causing injury, only bringing love. I heard this in a homily about prayer: “Don’t say a prayer thinking you’ve done something great for society and forget your part in letting God use you.” You might be thinking how hard this sounds, and that you can’t do it. But even in this message we have been given grace to persevere in what God has called us to do (James 5:16*), and we are asked to be ready with our weapon of the rosary. I challenge you to pray for one person (using the weapon of the rosary) from the heart. Pray every day at least one prayer for them. If you can, do an entire rosary for their needs. This does not mean, “Lord fix them so I can finally stand them.” Rather, “Bless them, Lord, and heal their wounds.” Pray this and see what wounds the Holy Spirit reveals, what compassion he brings. “I continue my pursuit toward the goal, the prize of God's upward calling, in Christ Jesus.” Philip. 3:14 *”For just as a body without a spirit is dead, so also faith without works is dead.” James 2:26 *Therefore, confess your sins to one another and pray for one another, that you may be healed.” James 5:16 Reflection by Carolyn Huntzinger 2 Corinthians 5:18-20 Message from our Blessed Mother, August 15, 2010: “My beloved children, thank you for responding to my call. It pleases me greatly that you join your prayers as a family. My children, I am sending you the grace today to persevere in what God has called you to do. Do not turn to the right or to the left, for this path is lined with the graces you need to fulfill God’s will. Take what I have given you already—my motherly instructions are to lead you and guide you, to bring you peace and joy of the Lord. My beloveds, be ever so ready with your weapon of the rosary, for it will defeat the obstacles that keep you from God. Now, my children, I wish that you would also persevere in going to holy communion, the blessed Sacrament of reconciliation. My children, all of these graces lead you, guide you, strengthen you to be that tower of love that God wants you to be. I need you to be a reflection of the mirror of my son, Jesus. I want that you be an oasis of peace. Peace, peace, peace of Jesus be with you and thank you, thank you, for being here today with me. Thank you for the sacrifice to seek out my son in me.” Being a tower of love sounds so easy, doesn’t it? There’s no question that our Blessed Mother is that tower of love. It was a privilege to feel that love on her Feast and to see Mary Constancio’s deep emotion as she felt the presence of our Mother. To be that love in the midst of a hurting world really does take great strength. How thankful I am for the weapon of the rosary. It is a powerful tool to teach us to love.
