Tal vez no

nuevo, encontrando emociones concatenadas
algo distinto. Alguienes y nadies se presentan y
no lo hacen a la vez. No importa quiénes sean
Luego

Portraitdrome: similar and diverse
I can state with no doubt that I belong to
a generation who likes choosing, who likes
asserting its subjectivity in situations where
selecting becomes necessary. In this context,
choosing is always a step in the process of
showing. This has happened since variety joined
prodigality; since there is an overflow of real
and virtual objects; since esthetical heterodoxy
can peacefully coexist with personal stamp.
Maybe this isn't exclusive to our time, but I am
completely sure that today, more than ever,
choosing is a gesture of authorship. So, we
choose to tell (ourselves) who we are, we select
within an ocean of possibilities in order to show
(ourselves) where we are heading to.
We have clothes, as one possibility for how to
express ourselves, and accessories, also for the
constant promise of particularity.
English Version
62
We have fotologs, flickrs, and facebooks, where
we carry out a sort of soft curator-ship, a shy
script that --to a greater or lesser extent-- is
nurtured by our private life.
(Although, it's not really clear if our life still has
something of private.)
Some of us also have the possibility to curate
exhibitions; the possibility of getting to know and
fall in love with art works and artists.
I think this is what happened to me with
Federico's, Leo's and Martín's paintings. At
first it was just a crush, and then all the rest
followed. I confessed my love to Tamara and
she thought that I just had to let go… somehow,
the combination of my desire for seeing
them exhibited, and her wanting this to be
accomplished, had to lead to something good.
The corpus of works appeared as something
established from the beginning and only a few
were left out (either because they belonged to
63
another series or due to a problem of space).
We had to choose the most representative ones.
Leo, by instance, says that his work is about
seizing a gesture, reproducing a frozen grimace.
That's why he showed characters in the midst
of an action, or with eyes shut, taken at a
disconcerting and timeless moment. To put
together Fede’s exhibition we decided to leave
out the most redundant works, those that didn’t
fit from a thematic point of view. His poetics
are clear and eloquent and his production,
plentiful. Nevertheless, I maintain that with a
concise speech one gets better results than with
an excess of images.
Where Martín’s work is concerned, the work of
selection was minimal; it became clear that he
already had a completely coherent cosmos. Even
before the show had a master idea, there was
already a coherent element in his production.
This is what we tried to show in Crimson when
we were setting up the show. That is the reason
64
why all the works were hung around one painting
that functioned as a leading core.
At "Retratódromo: similares y dispares" I tried to
show a certain sort of painting, to gain access
to something so common as the portrait genre
from the poetics and fine arts projects of these
three productive painters. The paintings they
present are sincere, art based on hard work and
craft. I believe in what they do not only because
they are enormously talented but also because
I'm convinced their search is genuine.
Mariana Rodriguez Iglesias.
65
Warning! Lab in action!
A notorious feature of this show is the fact
that the three artists' work was conceived and
developed within a single studio, making their
works as inspired by the cohabitation with the
other artists, as their personalities and work
in general. Incidentally, the critical text for this
exhibition was written as a companion of this
process -- a group of people generated texts,
trying not to avoid the personal singularities
towards some kind of democracy, instead
accepting the differences between people as a
very meaningful part of the game, recognizing
that the exchange is the very source of
reflection.
As usual when things come out from the entrails,
it is about the emerging result of blending a lot
of insight, a great deal of delirium, and some
pretentiousness.
We believe in a renewed form of art critique,
66
one based on practice and emotion. We get
crazy with the notion of collective writing, a
kind of writing in which different authorships/
signatures could blend. We portend this project
to keep it on its way in becoming a defined
method.
We think that, as much as contemporary art is
proud of being rebellious and questioning limits,
the critique should do the same thing in order to
gain luscious, sensitive elements, even fictions,
when it is about the creation of thought. We
wish to work as a lab in which essay-and-error
is the path to a kind of intellectual production on
art capable of being, at the same time, another
expression of this vision.
The product of this work are four texts that
were not made to be read one after the other
as it is in this edition. The idea was that the
exhibition´s spectators choose one randomly
without knowing the existence of the other three
because they were all looking the same. The
67
proposed game had to be with the gestation
of the writing that was born in an open space
of discussion, messy and lots of time re-tidy
it. That is why the four texts are unique, they
answer to personal´s ideas about the pieces,
and if it is possible, they are at the same time
essentially the same because they emerged
from the possibility of a space of common
thoughts, from the dialogue and discussion;
putting together different images that came
from a different combination of the pieces of
the same puzzle.

A portraitdrome is a place in which a race of
portraits takes place – that is its name, at least.
If we were at an autodrome, we'd see a bunch
of cars passing at maximum speed, growling,
cutting off the air, shaking a moved audience,
full of suffering, breathing deeply till the first
car passes the finishing-line.
That's not what we see at this time at
Crimson, because it is a peculiar kind of race,
whose aim isn't speed or even winning. We
could even describe our experience as an
anti-race, not with regard to the fleetingness
of the competition, but to the permanence
of relationships and the reminiscence of a
conversation. After all, it is about the richness
of meeting with three artists –each so similar
yet diverse - who tell us about the human figure
as an excuse for many others meanings to slip in and challenge one another.
A common point, and perhaps the most significant, is the elaboration of the human
69
figure, from different points of view. We see how each artist stamps a determined charge that builds and defines the figure as much as it erases and distorts it. Those are figures whose undefined rests end up being added, creating beings in which we can understand, and even feel, as long as we can recognize them.
A comprising idea presents itself from the three artists; the search for gesture in every sense of the word. It's a kind of gestural profusion that goes beyond the grimace or expressive stroke. The trails of matter, the lines of ink, the transparencies, these are the very faces of gesture. Through them certain ideas are dressed and shown: ideas that, without referring to identity as the essence of portrait, talk about human things, focusing on what is violent, disfigured, monstrous, or otherwise suspended in an instant, to catch complexity by the means of simplicity.
If there is speed, it is in the peculiar syntax of that chat which forces us to go from one piece
70
to another, looking for new meanings and finding
emotions linking them together. Most importantly,
realizing that every time we think we are
reaching the finishing line, we will just encounter
the start of a new race.
Furthermore, if we insist on the concept of
race, it is because it is so evident that there
is something running through these artists,
something that gathers them -without blending
them- and pushes them with a uniting and
dizzying force of attraction; like greyhounds in a
dog track, pursuing a hare. What is the hare for
these artists? That is the question we pose.
71
One space, dozens of faces, three gestures.
In front of somebody's picture, the question
about identity is hard to avoid… as much as one
attempts to disregard it, in order to claim it for
something else, such as the art intended to exist
in and of itself, just because it wants to be, to
show itself as it is.
“Retratódromo: similares y dispares” suggests
something different. Some-bodies and nobodies
are presented and not presented simultaneously.
It does not matter who they are or who they are not; what matters is: what do they let us see and what do they hide to let us see something else? Figures presented in the frames of the paintings do not deny themselves -nor are they intended to- discovering a reality that does not exist as such.
We are not in front of people, as would be the case with any kind of portrait. Nor are we facing faces, or even characters. We are, in fact, in front of gestures.
72
A gesture is an attempt and an intention -- it is
"to-mean-something"-- depending on who receives
and who reads it too. That is what we find when
facing the editions Martín Carpaneto, Leonardo
Garibotti and Federico Fernández present us.
Without any situation or context, these gestures
could be conceived as excuses, since there is no
trace in the plot that could make us participants in a story, nor any mention to a specific referent. In the whole, anyway, we can glimpse a picture which does not stick to the form. That is why a gesture is more than a figure or face. It is a vehicle of a certain kind of speech about mankind. Traces of matter, lines of ink, transparencies of painting, these are the faces of these gestures. Without referring to identity as the essence of portrait, mankind is still spoken to and described.
As these gestures become hidden, the character appears even more transparent, naked and dependent on circumstances. That is Martín Carpaneto's case in showing strong, enclosed and concrete shapes while hiding the gesture. In
73
this way, presenting those imaginary beings, who differ from the human referent we are used to, he places them in different situations and settings that let us see the deformity of their shapes; the idea of insanity made into shape.
Telling a story created by the artist's imagination
seems like a gesture dependent more on its
content’s form and less on its material gesture.
The reminiscence of an aesthetic inspired by the
"comic" genre, and especially the type produced
in Japan; end up reclaiming an attachment to
outline and environment.
In Leonardo Garibotti's case, there is a tendency
to appeal to the gesture to indicate the figure. The
characters are shaped, and yet equally distorted,
by the blurred line. There's a melancholy intention
in the deforming gesture of the brushstroke.
A strong opaque sensation hides behind the
indefinite line. Outlines and details that might
evoke nothingness, such as lusterless eyes and
pale colors, act like triggers of such melancholy.
74
The close-up settings invite an intimate relation
that reinforces this intention. The familiarity of
forms often hastens aloofness produced by the
blurred image.
Leonardo's image is the result of a process. It comes from another place, nurturing itself and taking form again. This immeasurable time between contemplation and the finished image is a pointed counterpoint of the photographic instantaneity in which faces are taken by surprise. Another time that is not of today is also present in Federico Fernández' work. The patterned images make it impossible to forget that these are not persons, but their images. Limits of subjectivity are always being erased by this feature. Restricted beauty is the norm.
Federico's strong and enclosed lines act as background for gesture. The violent intention would not emerge so easily without the strong contrast between this concrete line and its mirror relation, established by the referent and the explicit gesture of erasing, dripping, and blurring.
75
Repetition is overwhelming and reasserting; it leaves no escape. A reference to the advertising world establishes identification and familiarity, which become strange and sort of sinister, because of the intention of censorship. There is something of this impotence and nonsense contained in these blots.
Three artists, through their similarities and
differences, invite us to look at that place
where the human is brutally violent, distorted
and deformed, or suspended in an ephemeral
instant, in order to capture the complex amongst
simplicity.
76
Looking at this exhibition we find that Martín
Carpaneto, Federico Fernández and Leonardo
Garibotti stand for an art which wants to exist
by itself but does not intend to break apart the
History of Art, nor erase or rewrite it. It is an art
which simply wants to be as it is, to show itself
in front of us, to let us readapt these images and
thereby endow them with our own interpretations.
This time they put us in front of human figures,
mostly faces portrayed from an angle of vision very close to that of a photographic portrait. These pictures, paintings, and even the artists themselves, emerge and hide, simultaneously creating a game of the ambiguous and the omitted, inviting us to reflect on identity, the artist's role, and the possibilities of painting as a kind of language. We are confronted with gestures that artists have set before us, pieces devoid of context, coming from a personal reality: indefinite, ambiguous and unspecifiable.
In the face of this ambiguity we could seek some adjectives that might define this production: ugly,
77
violent, melancholic, repulsive, disturbing. We think, however, that this work cannot be limited in such terms, as paintings remain open to allow each person to find his or her own adjectives, different from those of another. That is where
their richness and amplitude lies. Here: image is
what it is. It doesn't want to deny anything. These
faces are simply there. They expose themselves
with distortions, masks, and traceable trails of
the painting activity. They step aside from the
canonically consecrated situation of the artist and
its model to create instead a personal universe
whose narrative core may be one important
aspect, but not the only one. We think therefore
that it is not the content, but how that content
is expressed, that is the real key: the settings,
decisions, the distortions these characters go
through, their abstract backgrounds, the gestures
(of their faces but also of the painting profession,
brushstrokes, blots, drippings and spatters), the
color range, the way materials are treated, the
deliberately imperfect finish. The human figure is
78
taken here as an excuse -even if we know that
the decision of representing humans is quite
relevant- but the way it is treated does not
make us think of the referent as a real empirical
subject. Recognition of the already known is not
what really matters here, but rather, letting go
and immersing into a playful universe in which
painting praises itself.
The three painters who participate in
"Retratódromo: similares y dispares" work with the
human figure as observed from different angles.
Each one endows their figures with elements that
construct and define, but also erase and distort
them. If a gesture is an intention, a desire to
say something (even if we don't know what)
and depends on who is observing and how he
understands the gesture, Martín Carpaneto,
Leonardo Garibotti and Federico Fernández leave
those marks and traces on their creations by
which we are able to understand as long as we
are able to recognize. The three of them work
with an image influenced by photography in which
79
the recognition mechanism is the obvious feature,
although this time it also implies estrangement
and distortion. Image as a projection of beauty
stereotypes, of badly accomplished pretensions,
that is Federico Fernández´s figure; an image
coming back from the sixties and seventies as
a pattern, a matrix in a series. Its referent is not
a real empirical subject but a serialized image,
a stereotype. The violence of distortion ends
up falling over the meticulously reconstructed
figures. The artist blurs their mouths to show the
impotence of the image, the inherent fragility
imposed on them by a precise outline. Boys and
girls: diminished, lessened, restricted, confined;
women and pictures of women shown incapable
of screaming to state their inconformity. At the
core of Martín Carpaneto's work -observing us
from the backstage of his hiding- is the figure
of a masked man, a faceless being. His mask
is green. He wears a sign like an infirmary cross
(or something alike). After him follows a series
of imaginary beings gradually moving away from
80
their human referent by way of distortion. They
appear sometimes in familiar situations, within
different settings, reminiscent of family albums,
holiday pictures of a sordid world. Again, the
artist takes human figure as a referent but then
deforms it. The accent is on the difference, the
unsettled and deform. But behind this deformity
there is no suffering, but a naughty trick; these
beings wants our complicity.
In Leonardo Garibotti's work what appears
deprived of narration, character psychology or a
reference model, is inversely proportional to the
quantity of meanings expressed on the plastic
creation level. Superimposed material layers
shape these sorts of absurd characters. They
are suspended in an evanescent instant, just a
second before changing… a simple but effective
gesture. Their intense looks seem to be asking
for somebody to take them out of their situation,
uncomfortable for being trapped in there; they
are looking for us, questioning us and calling our
attention. The image becomes clear because
81
of the extreme fugacity of the second, making
the synthesis emerge as key. The three artists
produce their works by studying and defining their
own path, but also by learning from each other
(they all go to the Andrés Waissman workshop).
That is why these gestures are more than simple
faces and figures. The material traces, ink lines
and painting transparencies, are these gestures'
faces. These ideas are dressed and presented,
communicating in each case about the human,
without referring to the portrait's specificity, that
could be the identity, and instead emphasizing
the place in which the human is brutally violated,
distorted, twisted and suspended, in but an instant,
capturing the complexity of its simplicity.

The group Fluor for collective writing was born at
the end of 2007 around a round table. Our first
objective was to prepare a text for the catalogue
of the "Retratódromo: similares y dispares"
exhibit, presenting works from Martín Carpaneto,
Federico Fernández and Leonardo Garibotti. The
exhibit was open from October 17th to November
3rd of 2007 at Crimson, a contemporary art
gallery. That same year the following activity
was centered on the elaboration of a text for
the Andrés Bisserier's exhibit "4 y 20 Cucos" 4
and 20 bogeymen, held at the Jardín Oculto,
contemporary art gallery, from November 16th to
December 30th. Our aim for 2008 is to orient the
group exploration towards collective curator-ship,
while keeping on with our reflection meetings,
and text production about contemporary exhibits.
This writing group is integrated by Noemí Aira
(1982), Tatiana Kohan (1983), Ana Schwartzman
(1981) and Mariana Rodríguez Iglesias (1982); all
84
advanced students of the degree in Plastic Arts
at the University of Buenos Aires.
