T he opening of the Bronx Terminal Market in 2009 helped to kick off a huge retail revival, introducing retailers (especially larger stores) to the opportunities in the borough. Tenants today include Applebee’s, GNC, Home Depot, BJ’s Wholesale Club, Skechers, Burlington Coat Factory, Raymour & Flanigan, Toys “R” Us and more. The biggest news, of course, is the $300 million Mall at Bay Plaza, the first enclosed fashion mall to be built in New York City in 40 years, which just debuted at the intersection of Interstate 95 and the Hutchinson River Parkway. A new Macy’s joins the previously existing JCPenney and an adjacent AMC Theater , as well as some 100 specialty shops, many new to the borough: H&M, Aeropostale, Monsoon, Accessorize, New York & Company, U.S. Polo Association, Swarovski, Michael Kors, Victoria’s Secret, Kay Jewelers and Ulta, among others. Olive Garden, Joe’s Crab Shack and Red Robin will be joined by one more restaurant, and coming in 2015 will be an XSport Fitness, its New York City debut. Coming soon to Baychester will be Gun Hill Square, which will house 350,000 square feet at the intersection of the New England Thruway, the Hutchinson River Parkway and East Gun Hill Road in late 2017. BRONX BOMBSHELLS It’s a retail revolution in the Bronx! After years of neglect from national retailers, the Yankees’ favorite borough is seeing a veritable World Series of developers, stores and brands rushing to find their place, from established locations such as Fordham Road (a favorite outdoor mall combining national retailers such as Gap, regionals including P.C. Richard and local restaurants and merchants). From New York City’s largest enclosed mall to upcoming factory outlets, it’s time to Cheer for the Bronx!
