Wireless scale systems and tills make it very easy to set up such promotions throughout the store without having to worry about cables. The Association for Retail Technology Standards (ARTS) of the National Retail Federation (NRF) is a retailer-driven membership organization dedicated to creating an international, barrier-free technology environment for retailers. ARTS was established in 1993 to ensure that technology works to enhance a retailer’s ability to develop store level business solutions and avoid situations that limit a retailer’s

ability to implement change while providing in-dustry standards designed to provide greater value at lower costs.

“METTLER TOLEDO has been involved with IXRetail from it’s conception, through our SofTechnics group” states Guy Dille, Strategic Business Unit Leader, Retail Software and Integration,”our in-volvement in these standards will insure that spe-cific data requirements of METTLER TOLEDO are included in these Application to Application XML schemas”

IXRetail mission is to provide standard, spe-cific XML schema to be exchanged between sys-tems. Currently, METTLER TOLEDO, through the SofTechnics group is working on Price Messaging V2 (V1 was co authored by SofTechnics), Item Information and Inventory Work Teams.

Through participation in these efforts and eventual adoption of these XML schemas, integration time and cost of METTLER TOLEDO solutions within the store will be reduced allowing clients to receive full benefits of the systems faster.

Gourmet Department Requires Fresh Solution

The Problem

The retailer has a Gourmet department that does business outside of the normal checkout area. In the past the retailer was able to use a simple cash register/scale combination, however advances in the stores’ customer loyalty program and require-ments for handling store promotions necessitated the move to the advanced features of a POS sys-tem.

The Solution

At first the retailer attempted to put together a POS system and a checkout scale – a good solution from a functionality point of view, but not optimal from a design, size, and footprint perspective be-cause of limited space in the checkout area. With the UC scale solution from METTLER TOLEDO, the retailer was able to run the same IBM POS soft-ware the rest of the store used while enjoying the benefits of an attractive and compact hardware platform. In essence, the open platform of the UC enabled a best-of-breed solution for Migros.

The Results

In less than six months the retailer has received a complete solution that satisfies all of its current requirements and can adapt to changes that may come in the future. Now the retailer’s gourmet customers can enjoy the same level of service in the Gourmet Department that they experience in the rest of the store.

(Switzerland) One of the largest retailers in Switzerland has implemented one of the

most advanced and integrated POS Solutions using the METTLER TOLEDO UC scale

system to run IBM VisualStore POS software.

Trust-Mart counts on METTLER TOLEDO in China

Making a single source decision isn’t easy. There are many companies to choose from. For some re-tailers product price seems to be one of the most important factors in selecting a product, but for Trust-Mart, identifying the most valuable solution was more important.

“Wise customers pay attention to the reliability of the products and

services they are buying,”The best value is proven over the life of the prod-uct. Cheap products do not always solve the core customer problems and many times these cheap

products do not come with the service needed to keep them running in the stores.

With METTLER TOLEDO it was clear that Trust-Mart could rely on a solution deployable through-out China. “Wise customers pay attention to the reliability of the products and services they are buying,” said Giu Lin of METTLER TOLEDO in China.

It is exhausting for a retailer to change suppliers, but when the value of the offering is superior it makes good sense and it pays off.

(China) Trust-Mart, a Taiwanese retailer, has 76 supermarkets in China. Until now, this

retailer has used scales from three different suppliers. Keeping up with many different

suppliers isn’t easy, so Trust-Mart went through a process to select a single supplier for

weighing solutions throughout China.

New Automatic Security Tag Technology Secures Grocery Products and Profits(USA) METTLER TOLEDO announces new grocery security technology to help reduce

product theft in the grocery meat case.

METTLER TOLEDO has launched a new grocer initiative and technology involving Sensormatic® Electronic Article Surveillance (EAS) tags to ad-dress the growing rates of grocery shoplifting. The new technology, which is based on PLU, Price/Lb, or Total Package Price criteria, involves automatic operation for the grocer, saving time and labor while ensuring proper tag application to the prod-uct.

In a new report, the National Supermarket Research Group’s 2003/2004 Shrink Survey investigates the overall level of shrink and causes for retail inven-tory loss in grocery stores. The study reports that overall supermarket shrink remains steady at 2.32 percent of retail sales. With a single tag, concealed and secured under the product’s price label, meat shoplifting can be dramatically reduced.

The METTLER TOLEDO Model 703 Security Tag Applicator applies the Sensormatic EAS tag to pre-vent theft of product from the grocer’s meat case. After a package has been wrapped and weighed, the Model 703, mounted on the Auto-Labeler®, applies a tag to the top of the package. The data label printer then prints and applies a price label on top of the tag, concealing it underneath.

“Shrink continues to be a major source of loss for the supermarket industry. As supermarkets oper-ate in a low margin, highly competitive environ-ment, they become increasingly sensitive to any operating inefficiencies,” shares NSRG Director, Larry Miller. “Best in class supermarket operators have realized that shrink recovery can be their top profit source.”

“Not all meat packages are of high enough value to justify an EAS tag,” offers METTLER TOLEDO Retail Business Area Market Manager, Bette Forsythe. “Application of the tag is determined either by spe-cific PLU or by setpoints entered into the METTLER TOLEDO Model 8361 Prepack Controller. When using setpoints, application of the tag occurs if the item price/lb. or package total price is above a threshold assigned by the retailer.”

Automatic operation saves retailers time and labor costs, as well. “Employees are not burdened with the decision to tag … or not to tag,” adds Forsythe. The 703 Applicator technology operates with sev-eral current and previously offered models of the Auto-Labeler®, including the METTLER TOLEDO Model 705, 706 and 606. Loading the tag roll is easy, and utilizes the Sensormatic tags designed specifically for meat trays. When tags run out, the 703 sends an alert message to notify the operator.

The new display can show weight, price, and trans-action data all in one place. This results in cost savings for the retailer, less space needed, and an easier way to share all of the POS transaction infor-mation with shoppers.

The PSC 8200 family of scanners can be integrated with the new Dura Dual Interval 6kg/15kg scale. And soon METTLER TOLEDO will be offering the Sira weighing kit for NCR’s 7872 scanner system as well. Both scale modules have been specially designed to be exceptionally durable and spill re-sistant. Best of Both Worlds - Checkout and Self Service!

Keeping control at the front end

In the Americas, most retailers rely on accurate weighing devices connected to POS systems to de-termine the actual selling price of random weight products. This type of system helps to prevent theft by ensuring the weight of the items leaving the store is properly accounted for. However, such a system also slows down checkout times while em-ployees find and enter PLU numbers for random weight items. This method also leaves room for er-ror when employees misidentify a product, which isn’t hard considering some retailers can carry up to 600 different fresh PLU’s. Finally, custom-ers do not re-ally know the price they will pay until they reach the checkout lane.

Making it easy for customers

For most of Europe, accurate weighing and bar code labeling is performed in the sales area for fruit and vegetables, making it easy to simply scan the product at checkout. In some stores, custom-ers weigh and label the products themselves, while in other stores, store personnel are assigned to the area to weigh and label products. Shoppers like self service/department weighing because they know the actual total weight and price of the product they are purchasing. When customers are responsible for the labeling there is a chance the product will be mislabeled. Or even worse, dishonest custom-ers may add more product to the bag after receiv-ing a label. To prevent theft, some retailers use an employee devoted to assisting customers with weighing fruits and vegetables, making costs and customer wait times rise substantially.

The best of both worlds

A new trend for fruit and vegetable weighing is emerging in Europe, and the Americas may soon follow, although in different ways and for different reasons. Retailers are starting to implement both self-service and checkout weighing as a combined solution to improve the customer experience and to reduce overall costs. This means that custom-ers can print their own barcode labels in the sales area for fruits and vegetables – a big advantage for customers since they like to know the actual weight and price of the product before reaching checkout. Adding self-service scales in the sales area also

helps retailers speed time at checkout by reducing PLU look-up

times, not to mention customers are usually better about identifying the correct item than checkout clerks. By adding checkout scales connected to POS systems, retailers are able to confirm the weight and identity of products in the bag at the POS. Also notable, with the proliferation of self checkout systems in the US and elsewhere, product look up times for customers at checkout could be reduced substantially by adding self-service weighing and bar code printing capabilities in the sales area.

A complete self-service labeling and checkout weighing solution is a smart way to operate be-cause it reduces time at checkout, improves ac-curacy of identification, helps customers know the price of the product before checkout, reduces security labor in the produce department, and re-duces losses due to theft and error. Retailer experi-ences have shown that these combined solutions pay for themselves within a matter of months.

For retailers, getting accurate prices for shopper selected fruits and vegetables has

never been easy. As technology has advanced, so have the number of ways for handling

the weight based pricing for these random weight products. As retail formats have

became larger, two different methods of calculating prices for these fresh items have

become the standard.
