What We DidWhat We Did

Four Legume Rhizobium Trials located in 4 villages, one in each cluster:

Bortaisour O’ra el Spong Presantas

TreatmentsTreatmentsUrea at 87 kg/ha = 40 kg/ha N.

Treatment No.

Results

Soybean failed due to poor seed The response to N was variable There was a significant positive

response to RH for MB and PN at all sites

The response to N was inconsistent and variable

The late topdressing was applied too late

Soil nitrate tests should be used to select low fertility sites for trials

Lessons learnt: Lessons learnt: legumelegume

Soybean Need certified and good seeds Need pesticide to protect while the flowering & fruiting

Mungbean Rain can affect grain quality (Disease problems) Difficult to harvest in a couple of different times

Peanut Late to harvest, some peanut seeds can germinate in the ground Difficult to harvest and require high labours (150 persons/day)

Page 14: Results Of Field Experiments In PAILIN - CARE

Lessons learnt: Lessons learnt: maizemaize

Weed management (Timing, technique)

Water logging (one site affected by water logging)

Urea Application (2nd time application seem to be late) (Low response to Urea because soil fertility seems

to be high)

What next – EWS What next – EWS 20092009

Baseline soil survey (50 farm fields) Continue rhizobium trials – 4 sites

(replicated, otherwise same design as 2008) Maize nitrogen trials – 4 sites

(replicated, more rates, early topdressing only) Long-term rotation experiment – 1 site:

1. Continuous maize – exploitive local practice2. Continuous maize – chemical fertiliser3. Mungbean (EWS) Maize (MWS) – biological system 14. Maize (EWS) Soybean (MWS) – biological system 2
