Nanjing

Tropospheric Ozone Variability during the East Asian Summer Monsoon as Observed by Satellite (IASI), Aircraft (IAGOS) and Ground Stations

1. Satellite data show the ability of IASI to detect a decrease in the tropospheric O3 column due to the monsoon

2. Aircraft data show a mixed signal at the surface and a decrease in O3 vertical profile in the free troposphere due to the monsoon

3. Ground observation show a latitude dependent monsoon signature with a decrease from May to June in PRD and June to July in NCP

Safieddine et al.

MarcoPolo: Monitoring and Assessment of Regional air quality in China using space Observations

MarcoPolo project funded by the EU-FP7. Results: • Monitoring air quality from space • Emission estimates from satellite for

NO2, SO2, VOC, aerosols • Air quality modelling and forecasting • Validation of model results, satellite

retrievals and emissions with ground observations

• Dedicated air quality studies • Dissemination on bilingual web portal

The TanSat the First Chinese CO2 Satellite

Launching in 2016

Retrieval algorithm

Successful cooperation of China and UK team: • Development of retrieval algorithm • Validation using GOSAT observations • Flux inversion and OSSE of CO2

Exchange of researchers and PhD students between UK and China

Extensive information exchange and data sharing in the area of retrieval algorithm and data assimilation

For Dragon-4 we plan to cooperate in the exploration of the TanSat measurement in conjunction with ground-based observations

10643 CO2 from space

Results and Challenges

• New insights into temporal variability of DOC (CDOM) in large and small water bodies towards an understanding of carbon cycling

• Improved understanding of spatial distribution (3D) and dynamics of POC towards an understanding of organic carbon production

• Challenges: Complex driving forces: land use, climate conditions, catchment hydrology, multiple sources

• Future activities - modelling drivers, linking carbon models, differentiating carbon sources algorithm development

Dragon 10561 - Carbon dynamics in inland and coastal ecosystems

Main achievements(CEOP-TPE, 10603): Several comprehensive observation stations have been set up. Soil heat flux and

effective roughness length over the Tibetan Plateau have been derived with new parameterization methods

Combing satellite remote sensing data and surface meteorological forcing data, time series data of land surface heat fluxes over the entire Tibetan Plateau have been achieved.

Numerical model have been applied to derive the land surface parameters in our study area.

Recommendations for dragon 4: Some research funding are in sorely needed to support further study. For the validation of remote sensing and numerical model results, more in-situ

observation sites should be set up in the next project. Combine both polar orbiting and geostationary satellites to achieve plateau-scale

land-atmosphere interactions with high spatial and temporal resolutions.

#10577: Upper tropospherie-lower stratosphere processes and climate change

Chemical Composition and Dynamics of the Upper Troposphere and the Lower Stratosphere (#10577)

• Very interesting results in reseach related to processes at different scales: from synoptic to climatology and long-term trends

• Extensive validation and use of satellite data • Exchange of data and expertise • 12 peer-review publications

• UTLS and stratosphere do affect the weather and climate • This might be a topic for DRAGON-4

Project ID 10532 Cal/Val – ADM-Aeolus

credits-ESA/ATG-Medialab

ADM-Aeolus will be first wind-lidar in space and is planned to be ready for launch by end 2016

First time that 4 wind lidars were deployed on 2 aircrafts during ESA-NASA-DLR Windval campaign in 2015

Ground and shipborne wind lidars are developed at Ocean University China, Qingdao for Aeolus validation

Recommendations for Dragon 4: Themes

• Atmosphere is missing as a theme. This includes air

quality as topic. • Why Cal/Val as seperate theme? It is related to all

other themes.

Page 15: Results from the Atmosphere & Climate - Earth Online - ESAearth.esa.int/dragon-2015-programme/...climate...304_ppt_present.pdf · Results from the . Atmosphere & Climate . projects

Ideas for future projects in Dragon 4

• YRD region: high resolution air quality, validation activities.

• ADM aeolus extension : wind, aerosols. • TanSAT validation, retrieval, inversion (CO2, aerosol),

link with S5p (Tropomi). • Effect of the middle atmosphere on weather and

climate.

Recommendations for Dragon 4: Funding

• New ideas means more work, but funding is limited. • For cooperation purposes, it is advisable to have travel

money. • Fellowships like the “living planet fellowships” might be

useful in Dragon as well. Both on ESA and Chinese side. • Young scientist funding is currently only on ESA side. It

would be more balanced to have this also at Chinese side. • Funding for young scientists for longer periods would easier

facilitate exchange of students. • Funding for validation campaigns would improve

cooperation within the projects.

Recommendations for Dragon 4: Data exchange

• “Validation is a key requirement for all projects”. For this ground-based data is essential.

• It is often very difficult to get access to Chinese ground-based observational data. Both for European and Chinese scientists. We ask MOST for more support on easier access to ground-based observations.

• Some satellites are missing on the list of EO data – 3rd party missions GOSAT, ODIN – METOP missions
