NATIONAL LEVEL SEMINAR

“COMPUTATIONAL APPROACHES IN PERSONALISED MEDICINE”

DEPARTMENT OF BIOMEDICAL ENGINEERING,

SRI RAMAKRISHNA ENGINEERING COLLEGE

The National level Seminar on “Computational approaches in Personalized medicine”

was organized by the Department of Biomedical engineering, Sri Ramakrishna

Engineering College. Nowadays computational approaches such as AI, Pattern

Recognition, and Bioinformatics play a very important role in the medical field. This

seminar provided a platform for the students, faculty, industrialists and research

scholars to enhance their knowledge in the field of personalized medicine.

The occasion was initiated by the welcome address delivered by Dr.G.Gopu, Head of the

Department, Biomedical Engineering, Sri Ramakrishna Engineering College. The

honourable chief guests for the occasion were

Mr. SubramoniamAiyappan, Project Manager, HCL

technologies, Chennai.

Dr.S.Jaganathan, Research officer ,Pasteur Institute

of India, Coonoor

Mr .P.K.Praveen Kumar, Assistant Professor,

Department of Biotechnology, Sri Venkateshwara

College of Engineering, Chennai

At the start of seminar the newsletter was released by the chief guests.

The first session was started by Mr.Subramoniam Aiyappan, the former collaboration

manager- Researcher in Sieman’s Healthcare Pvt. Ltd. His talk mainly dealt brain

data computing, cognitive science and neuroscience. Cognitive science in medicine is

one of the major research interests and the points he quoted in this topic helped in

getting an insight of this emerging field. Brain data computing is yet another blooming

field that has potential futuristic applications in medicine. He has an experience in

working with MRI domain which helped us in gaining knowledge on fMRI, its detailed

working and applications.

Mr. P.K. Praveen Kumar delivers his talk on “Impact Computational approaches in

Personalised Medicine”. Computational methods are increasingly used in almost all

areas of biology in order to understand the complex biological systems and develop

models that generate testable predictions. He listed the various fields that has a wide

range of impact on the compact approaches that are being used in personalized

medicine. They include the cellular and DNA computing, which involves the

investigation of the computational properties of the DNA . He gave brief explanantion

on the proteomic and the genomic databases and also on the medical image acquisition

and analysis. He concluded with quoting some case studies which concentrated on the

chikungunya virus vaccine development by reverse vaccinology approach, other based

on the nipah virus.

Dr. S. Jaganathan delivered his lecture on “Techniques used in vaccine production”. He

began with the basics of vaccination followed by its importance and the various

techniques for vaccine production. He mainly focused on the rabies disease, the human

behavior when affected with rabies virus, various symptoms, and preventive measures.

He also added points on the tetanus and human papilloma virus. The entire session

moved on in a very interactive and friendly manner. It gave everyone a depth

knowledge on vaccination and the methods of producing vaccines.
