What does that mean anyways?

Page 3: Restating as a key technique to achieve better outcomes in problem solving

The aim of problem restatement is to broaden our perspective of a problem, helping us to identify the central issue and alternative solutions and increase the chance that the outcome our analysis produces will fully not partially, resolve the problem. MORGAN D .

JONES

“In simple terms restate or redefine the problem in as

many different ways we can think of. This

allows us to shift our mental gear

without evaluating them”.

HOW ?

Page 6: Restating as a key technique to achieve better outcomes in problem solving

Einstein as quoted as saying “If I had an hour to solve a problem and my life dependedon the solution, I would spend the first 55 minutes determining the proper question to ask... for once I know the proper question, I could solve the problem in less thanfive minutes.”

1- paraphrasing

Page 8: Restating as a key technique to achieve better outcomes in problem solving

Initial statementHow can we reduce the risk of falling in older inpatient ?

Restate the problem using different words without

losing the original meaning

Paraphrase How can we prevent the

risk of falling in older inpatient from increasing ?

Page 9: Restating as a key technique to achieve better outcomes in problem solving

2-180 degrees

Page 10: Restating as a key technique to achieve better outcomes in problem solving

2-180 degrees (cont)

Turn the problem on its head

Initial statement How can we

reduce nosocomial infections in hospitals ?

180 degrees How can we

increase nosocomial infections in hospitals?

Taking the opposite view of a problem is a surprisingly

effective technique.

Page 11: Restating as a key technique to achieve better outcomes in problem solving

Restate the problem in a large context.

Broaden the focus: How can we achieve patients’ satisfaction?

3-Broaden the focus

Initial statement : Should we change the hospital’s policies?

Page 12: Restating as a key technique to achieve better outcomes in problem solving

4-Redirect the focus

Boldly, consciously change the focus.

Page 13: Restating as a key technique to achieve better outcomes in problem solving

Initial statement:How can we

boost the health

outcomes?

Redirect focus: how can we eliminate barriers to

health care .

It is often the most difficult but also the most productive.

Page 14: Restating as a key technique to achieve better outcomes in problem solving

5-ASK WHY?

Page 15: Restating as a key technique to achieve better outcomes in problem solving

Ask “why” of the initial problem statement then formulate a new problem

statement base on the answer. Then Ask” why” again, and again. Repeat this process a number of times until the essence of

the “real” problem emerges

Page 16: Restating as a key technique to achieve better outcomes in problem solving

Why?:Because many clients are not satisfied by

the care we provide.

Initial statement :How can we improve the quality care in

our unit ?

Restatement: how can change the care provided to the client in order to satisfy

their needs ?

Why?:Because the main role of nursing care is to satisfy the client needs.

Page 17: Restating as a key technique to achieve better outcomes in problem solving

Restatement: How can we readapt the nursing care plan

with the client needs? Why: Because the nursing care

plan must be focused on the satisfaction of client needs

Restatement: How can we change our nursing care plan?

Why?: Because we need a new nursing approach that fits our

clients need

Page 18: Restating as a key technique to achieve better outcomes in problem solving

Restatement: How can we assess the patient needs in order to choose the more adapted nursing care ?

Why: Because each patient shall be treated as a whole,

irreplaceable and unique person.

Principle problem has emerged:How to improve the quality of care in our

department by changing the nursing care plan provided to our client in purposive manner.

CONCLUSION

Restating the problem in the health care settings is a key technique to show our clients, colleagues and managers that the nurse has listened and understands what they have articulated. It also gives the nurses as health professionals a new perspective on the situation to get better outcomes.
