St Andrew’s First Aid officially launch a newcommercial division

4 St Andrew’s First Aid RESPONSE

In June 2012 St Andrew’s First Aidofficially launched a new commercialdivision, with the aim of consolidatingour position as Scotland’s leading FirstAid provider by increasing our share

of the workrelated trainingmarket in Scotland. This market is currently worthapproximately £6 million a year.

Page 7: Response Summer 2012

VISIT www.firstaid.org.uk CALL 0300 4 666 999 OR EMAIL [email protected]

The new division will employ 25 people and will aim to generate a turnover of

£1.4 million in the first year of operation.

The move is designed to equip thecharity to deal with any potential changes

to First Aid at work legislation, following theoutcome of the Lofstedt Review - theWestminster government’s independentreview into health and safety. The newly appointed Managing Director of thecommercial division, Mary McLuskey said: “We don’t yet know what the outcomes from Lofstedt will be butwe and our partners, the British Red Cross and St JohnAmbulance are all participating in regular meetings withthe HSE. We have been a trusted and reliable provider of education, training and supplies for some years but by forming our commercial division now, we will set the standard in Scotland in workplace First Aid for the future.”

There were 10,135 reported injuries to employees inScotland last year and 2.1 million working days were lostdue to work related injury and ill-health. Fifteen workerswere fatally injured at work but this figure does notinclude deaths of people whobecame ill at work and couldhave been saved by First Aid intervention.

Recent research has shown that four in five businesses admit shortcomings in their First Aid training and cover, resulting in over 1,000 fines being issued last year alone.

All profits from the commercial division will support thewider aims of the charity which are to increase Scotland’sFirst Aid skills and save lives.

In line with these aims, St Andrew’s First Aid believe thatwork related training has a much wider impact on societythan simply meeting legislative requirements.

Mary McLuskey explains: “First Aid skills are transferable and can save lives outside of work, making communitiesmore ‘resilient’. First Aiders can come to the assistance ofanyone who suddenly falls ill or is injured by applying lifesaving techniques and the role of trained First Aiders atthe scenes of natural disasters, accidents and terroristattacks is well documented.

“We believe companies should view FirstAid training of employees not as alegislative burden but as part of theircommitment to corporate socialresponsibility and community resilience. After all, what can be more sociallyresponsible than helping to save a life?”

WHO WILL RISE TO THE CHALLENGE WHEN THE TORCH COMES TO TOWN?ST ANDREW’S FIRST AID

Thousands of people camefrom far and wide to attendthe 165th New Deer Showwhich took place in Buchan,Aberdeenshire. Our local FirstAiders were providing First Aidcover and fortunately the rainkept at bay as the weatherheld out for most of the twoday agricultural event.

The crowds of peopleattending were treated to apacked programme, includinganimal judging, scores of stalls, the Industrial tent and thefood and craft fayre.

Younger visitors weren’t leftout either, with lots of activitieson offer.

The centrepiece of theprogramme was the arrival ofJason Smyth, who wowed theaudience on both days of theshow with quad bike stunts aspart of his Adrenaline Tour.

First Minister AlexSalmond was present atthe show and before heleft he asked to bephotographed withrepresentatives fromSt Andrew’s First Aid.

EventScotland announced that more than 400,000people turned out to wave on the Olympic Flame as it passed through towns, villages and cities acrossScotland taking in some of our most iconic landscapesalong an epic 846 mile journey. To ensure First Aid coverwas in place, St Andrew’s First Aid had the honour to be on duty as it reached many of its destinationsthroughout Scotland.Among the 715 inspirational Torchbearers who carriedthe flame in Scotland was mountain bike WorldChampion Tracey Moseley, and Joseph Foster whohelped to recreate the legendary Chariots of Fire scene on St Andrew’s West Sands beach. We managed to capture a few of our own very specialpictures to commemorate our involvement with theTorch Relay, which has now been hailed a resoundingsuccess with Sport Minister Shona Robison describing it as “truly spectacular”.

8 St Andrew’s First Aid RESPONSE

You kiss them every day, but ifyou had to give the kiss of life, would you know how?In a crisis it’s vital that First Aid is delivered with confidence and at St Andrew’s First Aid, we want to teach you how. We care for the sick and injured and teach as many people as possible First Aid skills in Scotland. Our campaign theme for the launch of Scottish First Aid Week 2012 is “You give kisses every day”. Watch out for our campaign which will launch in September in the run up to Scottish First Aid Week.

Our wee box saves morethan just changeTo support our aim to train as many people as possiblewith First Aid skills in Scotland, we have created our veryown wee savings box. If you would like your owncollection box, please e-mail [email protected],call 0300 4 666 999 or just drop us a note with yourname and address and we will arrange for one to bedelivered direct to your door. Please help us raise asmuch money as we can to support Scotland’s life savers.

Together, we can save livesScottish First Aid Week is all about raising awareness of First Aid and the roleof St Andrew's First Aid in Scotland. Each year around 34,000 Scots are admitted to hospital as a result of burns, falls andchoking; common accidents that requireemergency attention. Yet research shows that 77% of people lack the knowledge and confidence to administer basic First Aid, and go straight to dialling 999. This is not only putting unnecessary pressureon our emergency services, but is also puttingindividuals at risk. Many everyday accidentscannot wait for the emergency services. Ittakes just four minutes for choking to provefatal without appropriate action and, while it may take only seconds to dialthree digits, the target response time for an ambulance to arrive is eight minutes.Remember First Aid can be life saving – literally - so during Scottish First Aid Week take the time to learn a little bit about First Aid.

10 St Andrew’s First Aid RESPONSE

“In a crisis it is critical that First Aid is delivered withconfidence and withoutdedicated volunteers such asRobert we simply could notdeliver First Aid in Scotland, which helps thousands ofpeople every year.”

Just over fifty years agoRobert Burns receivedhis first certificate inFirst Aid. Since then hehas been a very valuedvolunteer First Aiderwith St Andrew’s First Aid.Commenting on his service with thecharity, Robert said: “It has been a greathonour and privilege to be involved withthe organisation for so many years. It hasgiven me so many happy memories. Iremember being on duty when QueenElizabeth officially opened Glasgow Airport. We then had to pile into the back of ambulancesthat took us over to Clydebank for the launch of theQE2. When you consider the number of events that Ihave been to it makes me appreciate how lucky I have been”.

Robert first became involved with St Andrew’s First Aid atthe age of 17 when he decided to expand his knowledge ofFirst Aid. He had been a member of the Boys Brigade whichwas what sparked his interest. Remembering his youth,Robert said: “As young boys we were all offered theopportunity to progress the training which we had receivedthrough the BBs. Not everyone did but it was somethingwhich I was interested in so I went along”.

Two years later Robert joined St Andrew’s Ambulance Corps(now known as St Andrew’s First Aid). By now he was a 19year old man in full time employment with British Rail, anorganisation which had strong links with St Andrew’s First Aidat that time. In fact so strong were the links that Robertjoined Queen Street BR Company - a Company mainly madeup of members of British Rail. Robert said: “British Rail wasgreat and really supportive of its members who volunteeredwith St Andrew’s First Aid. They would even give you timeoff to attend public duties (events).”

This was the start of a long and distinguished association forRobert with St Andrew’s First Aid, one of the highlights ofwhich was the award of an MBE in 1999. He was awardedthe title by Her Majesty the Queen in 2000 and Robertrecalled: “I had left for work early that morning and hadmissed the post. It wasn’t until I arrived at work that my wifeVivian called me to say I had received a letter from theCabinet Office and she had opened it by accident.

First aider celebrates 50 yearsin voluntary sector

Of course the letter only says that youhave been nominated and asks if youwill accept the award. In order to findout if I had been awarded an MBE, I hadto wait until the honours list waspublished and then go out and buy anewspaper to see if my name was in it”.

In 2012, Robert will have completed 50 years voluntary service with St Andrew’s First Aid. Commenting on this outstanding achievement, StuartCallison, Chief Executive Officer with St Andrew’s First Aid said:

“Volunteers are the lifebloodof St Andrew’s First Aid andRobert’s half century of service

to the organisation is a uniqueachievement. I would like to

congratulate him on behalf of everyone at St Andrew’s First Aid.”

EMPLOYEES RAISE THOUSANDS TO SUPPORT FIRST AID IN SCOTLANDEmployees from Balfour Beatty Engineering Services (BBES), one of the UK’s largest mechanical and electrical building services businesses, recently took part in the ‘Mugdock Challenge’ and so far they have raised an impressive £2,664 for the Renfrew branch of St Andrew’s First Aid.

The 85 participants ranged from two weeks to 70 years in age and included volunteers from St Andrew’s First Aid.

The challenge took place at Mugdock Country Park, ten miles north of Glasgow, and consisted of either a two, six or twelve mile walk through woods, along lochs, past reservoirs and a castle in what is one of the most picturesque parts of the country. The event was one of many taking place as part of Balfour Beatty’s Sustainability Month.

Mark Griffiths, Managing Director, BBES Power Systems, attended the event along with seven members of his family and said:

“ Following a cardiac arrest at work, prompt First Aid and the availability of a defibrillator saved my life. Hence support for this event was very close to my heart.”

If you would like to contribute please go to: www.justgiving.com/BBESMugdockChallenge

St Andrew’s First Aid RESPONSE 17

A massive thank you to all those who donated to St Andrew’s First Aid during our recent national Morrisons bucket collection. We’ve bagged an amazing £27,500 to support our work in Scotland.

We are Scotland’s leading First Aid charity and every year our volunteers donate more than 150,000 hours to ensure the public’s safety and enjoyment at events throughout Scotland. We rely on fundraising to ensure that First Aid cover and training is available in the community.

Darren Miller, responsible for fundraising and PR in East Kilbride, said: “Joining St Andrew’s First Aid has been one of the best things I’ve ever done. I’ve been a member for seven years and the number of events I’ve attended that I’d never have dreamed of being at is incredible. It’s not just the First Aid that’s brilliant, it’s a rewarding voluntary role that makes you feel you’ve really made a difference to your community.” If you are interested in getting involved with St Andrew’s First Aid, as a member, or supporting us in any other way, please email [email protected].

MORRISONS BUCKET COLLECTIONSWE BAGGED OVER £27,500

Our East Kilbride volunteers have embarked on a fundraising drive to secure new funding for their First Aid vehicle.

East Kilbride has its own local St Andrew’s First Aid Company who provide First Aid training, event cover, and volunteer opportunities for the community.

Recently the Company was raising funds at Morrisons’ Lindsayfield and Stewartfield stores and raised £900 over three days.

East Kilbride Company Commandant, Susan Adamson, said: “The mobile First Aid vehicle is a key part of any duty that we attend in the local area.

“It allows us to transport our vast range of equipment to events, while providing First Aiders and casualties with somewhere warm and sheltered should the need arise.

“I’m delighted with the amount raised this year. The cost of maintaining our vehicle, like all motoring, is escalating every year, that’s why this year we chose

to fundraise specifically to maintain and upgrade our vehicle to provide an even better service to our local community. This also includes new equipment to provide even better care to casualties who need our help.

“Thank you to everyone who has supported us so far. Every penny really does make a difference to our work in Scotland.”

We are part of T in the Park - Scotland'smuch loved and biggest musicfestival. This year, 135 of ourvolunteers from across Scotland notonly delivered a high level of First Aidin adverse weather conditions, they also played a majorpart in the larger medicalresponse team. Our volunteers were on hand to helpthe 75,000 people who visited thefestival each day, and attended to thecampers who needed First Aid assistance at night.

The high quality of First Aid and customer care delivered by all of our volunteers did not gounnoticed. The Scottish Ambulance Service praised their efforts and team work that helped administer First Aid to approximately 1,800 individuals over thecourse of the festival.

Commenting on this effort, Sheila McPherson, CorpsDevelopment Manager said: “I would like to pass on ahuge thank you for the sterling effort and commitmentshown by our volunteers. The weatherconditions did not make the dutiesat this event easy. When helpingout at various First Aid posts I wasproud of the enthusiasm andprofessional approach that everyvolunteer practiced.

It was a pleasure to see such a highstandard of volunteers representing St Andrew’s First Aid”.

St Andrew’s First Aid RESPONSE 19

Free First Aid kit forfestival goers

This summer, Scottish festival goers had theopportunity to request a free Festival First Aid Kitfrom St Andrew’s First Aid.

New for 2012, the pack is designed to help treat minoraccidents that can happen while enjoying Scotland’sfestival and events and we’ve reserved 100 of them togive away to readers of our RESPONSE magazine.

We created the pack to treat minor injuriesoften sustained whilst camping, walking longdistances and being in very crowded places, typical situations at festivals and events.

The Festival First Aid kit contains essential itemsincluding sterile dressings, swabs and tape, and is safeto take into festivals and event arenas as it containsno sharp items. Smaller than an A5 piece of paper, the waterproof pack easily fits in a rucksack, bag orlarge coat pocket.

To support the give-a-way we also revealed the fivemost common types of festival injury or complaintsour volunteers deal with at festivals and events, suchas the one shown on the opposite page.

The most common incidents involve excessivealcohol, extreme sunburn, drug abuse, sprains andstrains from walking on uneven ground, and cuts, grazes and bruises from discarded litter.

Our volunteers provide support at many Scottishfestivals and events, including T in the Park, where they provide First Aid support to hundreds of revellers.

Stuart Callison, Chief Executive, of St Andrew’s FirstAid commented, “Every year thousands of peopleenjoy Scotland’s music festivals, but occasionallythings go wrong and accidents happen. A littlepreparation can prevent a ruined weekend, andthis pack can help festival goers deal with minorinjuries while they seek trained help”

Essential First Aid for

1. Assess thesituation, makesure it is safeto help. If youcan’t movethem tosomewheresafe, clear some spacearound them.

2. Check airways,breathing,responsivenessand forbleeding.

Too much alcohol:Prevent over-consumption ofalcohol by drinking inmoderation, don’t drink on anempty stomach and drink plentyof water. If someone becomes illthrough drinking too muchalcohol stop them fromdrinking any more. If they arelosing consciousness or areunresponsive, lay them on theirside in the recovery position incase they vomit so theirairway is clear and they can’t choke.

Sunstroke: To avoid sunstroke, even onovercast days, apply plenty of suntan lotion, and stay hydrated. Ifyou find someone feeling flushand overheated, take them to aplace out of direct sunlight. Coolthem down slowly and providethem with water to drink. Ifsymptoms persist take them tothe First Aid centre.

Influence of drugs: Don’t take non-prescription drugs.Remember, outside of yournormal environment the effect ofdrugs on your body may begreater than normal. If you seesomeone who is feeling unwellfrom drug use, keep talking tothem and if they don’t respond callfor assistance immediately. If theydrift in and out of consciousness, lay them on their side in therecovery position to maintain an open airway.

Sprains and strains: To avoid sprains and strains, make sure you wear appropriatefootwear. If you or a friendsuffers a sprain or a strain, stopwhat you are doing and moveaway from the crowds. Rest andtake any weight off the limb. Apply a cold compressif possible and then seek medical assistance.

Cuts, grazes and bruises:Cuts, scrapes and bruises canoften be caused by litter on theground and wearinginappropriate clothing. Treat byapplying direct pressure to thewound. Keep the wound cleanusing an antiseptic wipe but ifthere is something stuck in thewound do not remove it. Seekmedical assistance as soon aspossible if bleeding has beensubstantial or continues.

3. Send someone tocontact amember of staff or phone 999.

4. If the personis unconscious, put them in therecovery positionand monitor theirsituation. If theyare conscious, stay with them, and reassurethem until help arrives.

Waterproof jacketor poncho: Event the sunniest weekend inScotland can turn to showersquickly. Make sure you havepacked a waterproof jacket.

Sunscreen: Long exposure to even lowlevels of sun can cause you toburn. If the sun comes out, makesure you apply a generousamount of sunscreen to avoidsun stoke and re-apply regularly.

Torch:A torch is vital for finding yourway around the site at night.Falling over guide ropes and tentpegs can lead to a serious injury.

Water bottle: Free drinking water is oftenprovided around the campsiteand arena. Take a bottle andkeep yourself hydrated.

Spare pair of socks: You will spend a long time onyour feet and wearing dampsocks is not good for yourwellbeing. Always pack extrapairs of socks in case one pairgets soaked.

Suitablefootwear: If it’s raining, make sure yourfootwear is waterproof. If it’ssunny, make sure they are madefrom a breathable fabric. Underno circumstances wear highheels. There is lots of litterunderfoot so a solid sole isimportant, flip flops and opensandals can lead to cuts and scratches.
