RESPIRITORY SYSTEM
This is the system that consists of very important organs that allows us to
breathe. It is responsible for the gas exchange as we breathe in oxygen and
breathe out carbon dioxide
The main organs
are:
• Nasal cavity
• Pharynx \• larynx• Trachea
Nasal cavityLook how big the
tongue is!!!
The nasal cavity is the beginning of the respiratory
system. Here, oxygen is breathed in through your
nose or mouth and carried through and passed on to the
next organ which is the pharynx .
Pharynx
Pharynx is just a fancy word for
throat. The air is taken from the
throat and passed on to the larynx.
larynx
Larynx is also just a fancy word for voice box. From your voice box the oxygen is carried to what
looks like a long pipe called your trachea.
Trachea
The trachea is like a long pipe made up
from small rings made out of very soft bone called cartilage . The trachea goes all the
way down through your chest and breaks into
two bronchi.
Bronchi
The bronchi are the pipes that pass on the air from the trachea to the bronchioles
which are even smaller pipes.
Bronchioles
These pipes carry the oxygen into little sacks where all the
magic happens, these sacks are
called alveoli sacks.
alveoli
The alveoli are responsible for the gas change, they change oxygen into carbon
dioxide. Then after the gas exchange, the process is reversed
Lungs
The lungs are divided into lobes, the right lung is bigger than the left
because the left lung has a 2 lobes due to the bump to make a safe
space for your heart, where as the right lung has 3 lobes. The lungs act in a sponge like way to absorb the carbon dioxide after the alveoli has released it. They also protect the bronchi and bronchioles from any
harm.
Some diseases that attack and harm this system:
bacterial pneumonia
Pulmonary embolism
Blood clots and floods your lungs.
Lung cancer
If you want you lungs to stay healthy and to look like these…
Don’t smoke or inhale anything that you
shouldn’t be inhaling. During the winter take multi vitamins so that you don’t get influenza and risk pneumonia.
