Respiratory System

Page 2: Respiratory system

The Respiratory System (or breathing) is a vital process to all human life.

In humans, it is the movement of air from the external environment, through the airways, and

into the alveoli.

Page 3: Respiratory system

The act of breathing is part of the respiratory system, a complex process where air travels into and out of the lungs.

Respiration is slightly different, where exercise causes muscles to release energy in the form of glucose

Respiration happens through Inhaling and exhaling. We breathe in (inhale) OXGYEN and we breathe out (exhale)

CARBON DIOXIDE.

Respiration

Air enters the body and it is warmed, moistened and filtered as it travels through the mouth and nasal passages

It then passes through the trachea and one of the two bronchi into one of the lungs.

Nasal passages- fosas nasalesBronchi- bronquioTrachea- tráquea

Page 5: Respiratory system

After passing into the many bronchioles, it finally arrives into some of the millions of tiny sacs called alveoli.

This is where gas exchange takes place - oxygen passes into the blood, and carbon dioxide passes out of the blood in the alveoli.

Respiration

Alveoli- los alvéolos

Page 6: Respiratory system

INHALINGThe diaphragm contracts, pulling downwards to increase the volume of the chest.

Pressure inside the chest is lowered and air is sucked into the lungs.

Page 7: Respiratory system

Look at the person sitting next to you.

Watch them INHALE.

What happens to their chest?

Page 8: Respiratory system

EXHALINGWhen you exhale:The diaphragm relaxes, moving back upwards, decreasing the volume of the chest.

Pressure inside the chest increases and air (carbon dioxide) is forced out.

Page 9: Respiratory system

Watch them EXHALE.

What happens to their chest?

True or False? We breathe in Oxygen.

We breathe in Carbon Dioxide.

Air enters the body through the mouth.

Alveoli is where the gas exchange takes place.

In the Alveoli the Oxygen exits the blood.

In the Alveoli the Carbon Dioxide enters the blood.

When we exhale, the diaphragm contracts.

When we inhale, the diaphragm expands.
