WHAT IS THE RESPIRATORY SYSTEM

Page 4: Respiratory System

•OUR CELLS USE

OXYGEN TO OBTAIN

ENERGY FROM THE FOOD

WE EAT.

HOW DOES IT WORK

Page 5: Respiratory System

AND PRODUCE CARBON DIOXIDE

Page 6: Respiratory System

THE RESPIRATORY SYSTEM ALLOWS US TO TAKE OXYGEN FROM THE AIR AND EXPEL CARBON DIOXIDE. THIS PHENOMENON IS CALLED RESPIRATION.

Page 7: Respiratory System

WHAT IS BREATHING?OXIGEN IS VITAL FOR OUR BODY’S CELLS.

THESE RESIDUES, AS CARBON DIOXIDE, ARE

REMOVED BY THE RESPIRATORY SYSTEM

THE ENERGY THAT CELLS NEED TO LIVE COMES FROM THE

FOOD WE EAT.

THE RESPIRATORY SYSTEM IS MADE UP OF 1. AIRWAYS

- NOSTRILS - PHARYNX - LARYNX - TRACHEA - BRONCHI

2. LUNGS

NOSEThe nose is the door of the respiratory system that allows us to smell and also to feel the taste. It has two holes called nostrils, which are separated by a smale wall called nasal partition. The nasal partition is made of cartilage and very thin chunk bones .

MOUTH

It´s what we use to introduce air into the body, along with the nose.

Page 12: Respiratory System

PHARYNXThe pharynx is a tube-shaped structure that helps breathing. It is located in the neck and connects the nose and the mouth with both the larynx and the esophagus. Air and food go through it.

Page 13: Respiratory System

LARYNXThe larynx is placed in the beginning of the trachea. The larynx is a cavity formed by cartilages and a lump called The Adam’s apple .The vocal chords are in the larynx. When the vocal chords vibrate, they produce the voice.

Page 14: Respiratory System

TRACHEAThe trachea is a pipe formed by cartilaginous rings, which keep it always open. It is divided into two branches: bronchi and bronchioles.

BRONCHIOLESAND

BRONCHIThe bronchi are the pipes in which the trachea is divided. They penetrate in the lungs, where they branch out several times to form the bronchioles.

Page 16: Respiratory System

DIAPHRAGM It is a muscle that separates

the chest from the abdomen. When we inhale it moves down to increase the size of the throracic cavity. When we exhale it moves up reducing the thoracic capacity and pushing the gases towards the mouth or the nose to eliminate them.

LUNGSThe lungs are two spongy organs of pink colour that are protected by the ribs. They are inside the torax.

Page 18: Respiratory System

AIM

To carry oxygen to the body´s cells

Page 19: Respiratory System

RESULT

• Carbon dioxide is produced (it is toxic !), and it must be eliminated.
