Over the course of the camp all of the children have completed chal- lenging activities such as rafting, the flying fox and various vertical challenges. What has im- pressed me most has been the support and encouragement that the students have shown each other and the resilience, persistence and determination of each and every child as they each battled personal challenges, and at times, fear and anxiety. I would like to thank Mr Burke, Mrs Connelly and Mrs Wladyka for their precision organisation of the camp and all activities. I would also like to acknowledge Mrs Connolly, Mrs O’Neill, Miss Sci- arrone, Mrs Johnstone, Mr Milne and Mr Maher for generously giving up their own personal time to attend the camp. We were also fortunate to have Father Minh Thuy lead us in a beautiful mass on the last night. I feel blessed to have such dedicated staff.

Stations of the Cross Reflection We are fast approaching Holy Week, the most important week of the year as a Catholic community, even more important than Christmas. The events we celebrate at Easter happened a long time ago. In another very real sense, they are the basis of our day-to-day experiences. The Gospels outline Jesus’ life story and we all share the broad outline of that sto-ry, this being: He was like us in all things, sin excepted. The rich symbols of Easter bridge the gap of over 2,000 years to remind us of the meaning of Jesus in our day to day lives. Like Jesus, we fear the pain that faithfulness to God may demand. The core of the Easter message is that out of death comes LIFE, life to the full. The grace of the Stations of the Cross Prayer Reflection held in the Church on Thursday 29 March at 9.30am will assist us to enter into this mystery. I would like to invite our parents, parishioners and friends to our Holy Week Prayer Reflection. Practical Ways to Celebrate Lent Lent gives us 40 days to reflect on Jesus Christ and our own spirituality. Here are 15 suggestions to try during Lent. 1. Go to confession. 2. Be active in Caritas and Project Compassion. 3. Pray on a daily basis to deepen your connection to Jesus. 4. Shut off the computer or TV and read the Bible. 5. Volunteer your time. 6. Send thank you notes to those that helped you. 7. Prepare meals for a shelter or someone who might be needing help and support. 8. Donate clothes and toys to charity. 9. Pray for someone you do not know. 10. Smile more often. 11. Try to stop complaining and being critical of others. 12. Plant a garden to learn how to nourish living things. 13. Call a friend or relative you lost touch with. 14. Take someone to Mass with you. 15. Be a happy and positive person. Charity Walk: Our Lenten Promise Our students in Year 3-6 will take part in our annual Charity Walk on Friday 23 March at 9.15am. Our students, teachers and education assistants will complete a five kilometre walk around the school to raise money for Pro-ject Compassion and Sister Margie Bourke’s work in East Timor. I thank our parents and wider community for generously sponsoring the children to raise money for a very im-portant cause. Year Three Parent 1:1 Bring Your Own Device Parent Night As mentioned at the Parent Information Evening at the beginning of the year, from 2019 Sacred Heart School will be implementing a 1:1 Bring Your Own Device iPad program for all children entering Year Four. Our current Year Three parents have been invited to attend a Parent Information session in relation to the pro-gram on Wednesday 21 March at 7.00pm in the Year Four classrooms. I ask our Year Three parents to register their attendance by clicking here. This evening will be an informative session that will provide you with training and a greater understanding of how your child will utilise the iPad in the classroom. A Question and Answer session will round off the evening.

May God bless our school and those within it.

Lent gives us an opportunity to reflect on the suffering and death of Jesus and his ultimate resurrection. A good way to reflect is to do different activities together as a family and

FAMILY STATIONS OF THE CROSS is one way.

Children love candles! Use this simple prayer format to engage the family in the Passion of Jesus. Beginning with 12 lit candles, read each station and extinguish a candle until all is dark.

Materials

12 lit candles (white or red)

Red cloth or plate

Small torch for reading

1. Arrange the twelve candles on the cloth or plate and light them.

2. Have music ready to play at the end if you so desire.

3. Turn out all the other lights.

Prayer Leader: Lord God, we gather to remember your suffering and death for us. You so loved the us that you gave us your Son Jesus so that we might have eternal life. The Response is: Jesus has given his life for us. All: Jesus has given his life for us. 1. Jesus eats the Passover with his disciples. L: Jesus, you know each of us better than we know ourselves. Even with all our faults, youlove us enough to die for us. R: Jesus has given his life for us. [Extinguish the first candle] 2. Jesus in the Garden of Gethsemane. L: Jesus, even in the face of torture and death, you did your Father’s will. Help us to surrender to the Father’s love also. R: Jesus has given his life for us. [Extinguish the one candle] 3. Jesus is Arrested. L: Jesus, you were betrayed by someone who you loved and then abandoned by those who swore to follow you. Forgive us for the times we have turned away from you. R: Jesus has given his life for us. [Extinguish the one candle] 4. Jesus is condemned to death. L: Jesus, you died even though you had done nothing wrong, because you loved us. R: Jesus has given his life for us. [Extinguish the one candle] 5. Jesus is crowned with thorns. L: Jesus, you were ridiculed and rejected. When we tease or bully other people, help us to remember you and what you suffered for us. R: Jesus has given his life for us. [Extinguish the one candle] 6. Jesus takes up his cross. L: Jesus, when I have burdens and worries, you are carrying me, helping me. R: Jesus has given his life for us. [Extinguish the one candle]

7. Jesus meets Veronica. L: Jesus, help me to see your face in other people and to always be kind to them, as Veronica was kind to you. R: Jesus has given his life for us. [Extinguish the one candle] 8. Jesus is stripped. L: Jesus, before you I stand naked. You know me and love me. R: Jesus has given his life for us. [Extinguish the one candle] 9. Jesus is nailed to the cross. Jesus, you forgive me even when I don’t deserve it. Help me to forgive too. R: Jesus has given his life for us. [Extinguish the one candle]

10. Mary is sorrowful. Jesus, may we be more like Mary, joining others in their suffering. R: Jesus has given his life for us. [Extinguish the one candle] 11. Jesus dies. Jesus, when I feel all alone, you are here with me. R: Jesus has given his life for us. [Extinguish the one candle] 12. Jesus is laid in the tomb. Jesus, you rest in the darkness of the tomb waiting to rise to life. Give me patience to wait with you. R: Jesus has given his life for us. [Extinguish the one candle] Pause for a few moments in the darkness. Then say the Hail Mary, or sing an appropriate Taize song. Finish with the Sign of the Cross

Coles Sports for Schools Program Thank you so much for collecting the vouchers and placing them in the school’s box at COLES FOREST LAKES or in the school office. If we could make one simple request—it would be that any vouchers being dropped off in the box in the school office be individually cut up. That would be a great fun task for the children to do (with supervision) and would help a great deal in collating them each week. Thank you very much for your co-operation and support with this program.

LIBRARY NEWS with Mrs Stilwell

It has been a very busy term in the library!

We have received all of our new furniture, the shelving is in place, we have a new library software system and we are sorting out our collec-tion. I have purchased quite a few new books that I will begin pro-cessing in the coming weeks. Also, I am the process of organising a Scholastic Book fair to be scheduled in June, details will be sent out when we are a bit closer to that date.

I know there has been quite an interruption to the borrowing sched-ule and we thank you for your patience. Now that everything is in place, borrowing will be back to normal with most classes scheduled on Monday. Please be reminded that students will need to return their library item/s before a new one can be issued and that they will need a library bag. Please do not send students with plastic or paper bags as they do not protect the books sufficiently.

Scholastic Bookclub catalogues have been sent home with the eldest child for each family. Please remember, online orders only. The details for ordering are on the back of the catalogue. All orders must be submitted by 28 March with thanks. I have some spare cata-logues in the library if needed.

Please feel most welcome to come into the Library and have a look at the newly created vibrant space! If you have any library questions please contact me on [email protected]

CONGRATULATIONS to our Early Learning Centre pictured here with Skidzy our Sacred Heart ELC Scarecrow who won the prize for best Scarecrow at the Southern River Community Garden fair on Saturday 10 March.

ST PATRICK’S DAY is on Satur-day 17 March 2018. St Patrick is the patron saint of Ireland and because we have a lot of people who came from Ireland in the early days along with a lot of Irish people living in Australia

now, it is a day of great celebration for everyone, Irish or not. There is a special Mass at St Mary’s Cathedral in Perth at 10.00am on the Saturday then there are celebrations all over the city but Leederville and Subiaco appear to be the places to be. There is a FAMILY FUN DAY with stalls and rides and lots of fun at Medibank Stadium (the old Leederville Oval) and a Parade around Newcastle and Vincent Streets in Leederville with a display of Irish Dancing. Wear something green on that day and join in the fun wherever you are.

SACRED HEART RECYCLING NEWS

The Waste Wise team has had a busy start to the year. We have already sent off one large box full of empty

cosmetic packaging to TERRACYCLE. Please keep your empty Oral Care and beauty product packaging com-

ing in as our school receives $$$ per kilo. Items such as lipstick cases, lotion bottles, shampoo and condition-

er bottles, make up jars and toothpaste tubes etc but we stress that they MUST BE EMPTY and they MUST

BE CLEAN!!!

There is also a YELLOW WHEELIE BIN situated outside the Office. This is for battery

recycling only.

Our GREEN TEAM have been doing a fantastic job at emptying our compost bin at the

end of every lunch and minimising the school’s waste by healthy composting.

What a great way to keep the school waste down and promote environmental care.
