FROM THE PRINCIPAL’S DESK I would like to thank staff, parents and students for their support and encouragement this year in making Kiama High School such a wonderful school. We have achieved outstanding results in the 2018 HSC with 51% of our students gaining at least one Band 5 or Band 6. Our top ATAR is 97.15. We also congratulate two students for making the Distinguished Achievers list, Binta McKern for coming 3rd in the state in Aboriginal Studies and Sarah Cafe, 8th in the state in Hospitality Examination (Food and Beverage). 45 students have been accepted to the University of Wollongong through the early entry program and many students have accepted traineeships and apprenticeships which will set them up for successful careers. Well done to the class of 2018 and to our fabulous teachers who have guided them through six years of high school. Presentation night and year assemblies have allowed us time to reflect on the year that was and we have certainly been busy. We have celebrated major events such as The Queen’s Baton Relay, The War on Waste and the KHS Fest. We have raised money for drought relief, for suicide prevention, for The Salvation Army, Shave for a Cure and our CARE sponsor child. We have celebrated our diversity and we have celebrated our Aboriginal culture. It’s been action packed! Kiama High School enjoys the support of numerous local businesses and organisations throughout the school year and I'd like to take this opportunity of expressing our appreciation of and gratitude for their kind gifts of time, professional expertise, work experience opportunities, gifts and monetary donations which assist our students in their academic, sporting, cultural and employment endeavours. I would especially like to acknowledge the generosity of Rosebank Meats, Kiama, and Trim's Fresh, Shellharbour, for their donations to our Christmas initiatives. Have a safe, happy and healthy Christmas. Take time to reflect on your achievements and make some achievable New Year’s resolutions. Return to us energised for the 2019 academic year. Term 4 Week 10B
Enjoy your holidays, see you in
2019!
FROM THE PRINCIPAL’S DESK
I would like to thank staff, parents and students for their support
and encouragement this year in making Kiama High School
such a wonderful school.
We have achieved outstanding results in the 2018 HSC with
51% of our students gaining at least one Band 5 or Band 6. Our
top ATAR is 97.15. We also congratulate two students for
making the Distinguished Achievers list, Binta McKern for coming 3rd in the
state in Aboriginal Studies and Sarah Cafe, 8th in the state in Hospitality
Examination (Food and Beverage). 45 students have been accepted to the
University of Wollongong through the early entry program and many students
have accepted traineeships and apprenticeships which will set them up for
successful careers. Well done to the class of 2018 and to our fabulous teachers
who have guided them through six
years of high school.
Presentation night and year
assemblies have allowed us time
to reflect on the year that was and
we have certainly been busy. We
have celebrated major events
such as The Queen’s Baton
Relay, The War on Waste and the
KHS Fest.
We have raised money for drought
relief, for suicide prevention, for
The Salvation Army, Shave for a
Cure and our CARE sponsor child.
We have celebrated our diversity
and we have celebrated our
Aboriginal culture. It’s been action
packed!
Kiama High School enjoys the
support of numerous local
businesses and organisations
throughout the school year and I'd
like to take this opportunity of expressing our appreciation of and gratitude for
their kind gifts of time, professional expertise, work experience opportunities,

NEWS FROM SECONDARY STUDIES
Assessment Task Programs and Calendars on KHS Website The KHS Assessment Program Booklets for Years 10, 11 and 12 have traditionally been uploaded onto the KHS website (under Student Life / Year Groups) to ensure that parents and caregivers have access to this important information. In the next week, one-page 2019 Calendars will also be uploaded for each of these year groups, allowing students, parents and caregivers to more easily plan their school year. It should be noted that, although students are provided with a printed copy of both the Assessment Booklets and the Calendars, there are times when assessment schedules are modified for a variety of reasons. The KHS website will always provide the current assessment programs and calendars, all of which will include the date at which it was last amended. If in doubt about the timing of tasks, please consult the website. 2019 Striving For Excellence Study Skills Days for Senior Students For your calendar: this excellent program to assist our students in developing and honing their study skills will be held on the following dates in 2019:
Tuesday 12 February 2019 - Year 12 Tuesday 19 February 2019 - Year 11
As usual, these programs will be held at the Kiama Pavilion which has proven to be an excellent venue for our students. The facilities enable both whole-year presentations in the Norfolk Room, together with smaller seminar sessions in the Kendall, Surf Beach and other rooms downstairs. Further information will be provided early in Term 1.
2019 Parent Information Evenings - Years 10 and 11 For your calendar: Parent Information Evenings will be held early in 2019 for the parents of Year 10 and Year 11 students. These evenings have proven to be very popular with parents in the past few years, especially with the changes to the 2019 and 2020 Higher School Certificate courses and assessment practices. Keep these dates in your diary:
Tuesday 5 February 2019 - Year 11 parents/caregivers Tuesday 12 February 2019 - Year 10 parents/caregivers
These evenings are held in the School Library at 7.00pm and students are more than welcome to attend.
2019 Course Selections - Years 8 and 9 Earlier this term, Years 7 and 8 students requested courses for their 2019 electives. It is expected that the Years 8 and 9 student placements will be published at the entry to the School Library on Tuesday. If your child is not happy with the courses they have been offered, it will be possible for them to request an amendment early in 2019. Students will need to visit the Secondary Studies Office in the Library to request any changes and receive the appropriate forms. It must be emphasised that, whilst every endeavour is made to accommodate student requests, sometimes it is not possible. Also, there is a clear process for requesting course amendments: students are not to canvass individual class teachers or Year Advisers as this unnecessarily increases their workload. Requests to Amend Courses - Years 8, 9, 10 and 11 For your calendar: the cut-off date for requesting any changes to electives and course enrolments is Friday 1 March 2019. Only in exceptional circumstances will any requests after that date be considered.
Please feel free to contact the Secondary Studies Office if you have any concerns with respect to your child's course selections and/or placement. Remember, if there are issues with the content of courses, the best person to speak with is the relevant Faculty Head Teacher.
