SBIRT for Health and Behavioral Health Professionals:
How to Talk to Patients about Substance Use A 4-hour, self-paced, online course from University of Missouri-Kansas City.
Learners will take part in an interactive orientation on SBIRT (screening, brief
intervention, and referral to treatment for substance use) with adults, applying their learning
through interactive games, case scenarios, and quizzes to develop their knowledge, skills, and
abilities in using SBIRT as an intervention with patients.
Foundations of SBIRT The course provides an introduction to SBIRT, including the rationale for and
efficacy of implementation in various settings. The 4-part course can help to inform interested
professionals about the importance of incorporating SBIRT activities into substance use disor-
der prevention and treatment systems. Available from Pacific Southwest ATTC.
The Prevalence of Opioid Misuse: Doctor Shopping, Co-ingestion, and Exposure This self-paced online course covers important topics in prescription opioid misuse. The three
sections will introduce you to prescription opioids, the link between multiple doctors and op-
portunities for misuse, and the prevalence of high-risk use among adolescents (including mix-
ing pills with other drugs).
Electronic Tools for Use in the Continuum of Care for Patients With Addiction This is a self-paced online course about the use of technology throughout the continuum of
care for patients with addiction. The five sections will introduce you to five different electronic
tools that can be used in prevention, treatment, and aftercare.
Adolescent Specific Courses: Introduction to SBIRT for Adolescents Enhance the knowledge of SBIRT necessary to identify and address the needs of young indi-viduals who are using alcohol or other drugs (AOD) in a risky manner. Presented by Sharon Levy, MD, MPH, and developed in collaboration with the Adolescent Substance Abuse Program (ASAP) at Boston Children's Hospital. (3 CEs available) Available from the National SBIRT ATTC.
