What do we mean by ‘Mainstreaming’?
Integration?
Institutionalization?
• Mainstreaming is a ‘process’… to make it a ‘normal process’
• Not an one-off exercise… but rather continuous from short to long term
• It is not an end in itself… rather a strategic approach

DRR/CCA in Development/Recovery
Avail the Opportunity
Heightened hazard awareness can be harnessed for DRR e.g. New Building codes after Kobe Earthquake
Cost-effective in the long run
Not all the build back better propositions necessarily increase reconstruction cost e.g. in Bangladesh cyclone resistant features in non-masonry structures increase in only 5 % of construction cost (Source; Provention Consortium)
Making best use of available resources
Resource for recovery will probably not be available for longer-term e.g. UK Aid DRR Policy to set aside 10 % of disaster fund to reduce impact of related future disasters (Source; Provention Consortium)
Development either create risk or reduce risk. e.g Building and not earthquake kills people.
Development not risk neutral
Jakarta, Indonesia
Skewed Development
