The residential market in Australia is evolving technically at a rateof knots and I don’t mean 20 knots, it’s more like 100 knotsovernight, similar to the recent strong winds.

We now have access to advanced technology which was frightfullyexpensive ten or so years ago, most are within reach financially for theaverage two income family, all with clever planning.

Who would have thought that a decade or so ago you couldcontrol your security, communications, energy management, lighting, blinds, pool, your garden watering system and much, much more allvia a remote or with the touch of a button (you could even turn thecoffee on – if you wish).

More recently I attended an informal high school educationsession, to give me a clearer understanding of the path that lay aheadfor my son studying for his final year at school. What did this sessionachieve for me? I came away feeling quite overwhelmed, and almostfelt sorry for what lies ahead for my son. However, the one thingwhich became very evident and was clearly outlined is – to beorganised and get planning, now!

The same principal can be adopted after you have made a decisionto build your dream home, be organised, get planning and make wisechoices. The more homework you do, the more research you do, themore organised you’ll be for what lies ahead, your journey will bemuch easier and enjoyable.

So find somewhere warm, sit down, relax with a cup of coffee andread some of our articles in relation to technology and we hope ourpublication will assist with all that planning.

Until next time,

The Hills Home Hub delivers anddistributes data, phone, video, audioand TV signals using the latest indata and TV cables from a centrallylocated enclosure to any room ofyour choice.

Structured cabling using the HillsHome Hub is preferably planned atthe same time as your electricalwiring. The central enclosure ishome to the devices that enable the

delivery and distribution of thesesignals. It also houses the securitysystem central controller. An ideallocation for the central enclosure isa garage or utility room.

It is important to plan whichrooms you would like to accessdata, phone, video, audio and TV.This planning is important to younow and to future owners of yourhome later because it adds flexibility

and value. The use of a room couldchange over time. A nursery now willbecome a teenager’s bedroom, andpossibly a study or home office inthe future. In order to access orshare these signals, cables alongwith wall outlets, containingstandard data and TV entertainmentpoints need to be installed.

Modern technology has brought manychanges to the way we live, specifically incommunications where many new services arebeing introduced that require high-speeddelivery infrastructure. New Digital Telephone,Ultra-High Speed Internet and TelevisionServices (including pay and free to air) offergreatly enhanced performance whencompared to older technology. Toaccommodate these changes, residentialdevelopments must move forward withtechnology and provide infrastructure that willhave the capacity for not only today but alsofor future technological advancements.

In standard residential areas, theincumbent carrier meets the basiccommunication needs of the community. AtOptiComm, there commitment is about beingat the forefront of the education andbroadband revolution, and as such theyprovide advanced fibre optic communicationinfrastructure as a replacement for thetraditional copper network.

Opticomm’s fibre optic basedcommunication network will provide a rangeof services, including reticulation of the

analogue and digital free to air televisionsignals, Pay TV, Ultra-High-Speed Internet, and a Standard Telephone Service. Additionalservices, such as Community Intranet, securitymonitoring, gate control, and newentertainment services such as IPTV andVideo-on-Demand, are all possibilities withthis latest technology.

A fibre optic enabled community allowsfor you to connect to the network that runspast your property. A fibre optic lead in cableconnects to a device on the external wall ofyour home. This is called a NetworkTermination Device (NTD) and it is where theoptical signal (light) is converted to anelectrical signal and retransmitted on twistedpair and coaxial cable to your HomeDistribution Unit (HDU).

HOME WIRING GUIDELINESA structured cabling system in today’s homeis important to take full advantage ofmodern telecommunications systems. Allcabling shall use a star wire topology, that isall cabling is wired from the HomeDistribution Hub in the garage to the outlet

plate or device as an individual feed withoutjoints, tap offs or splitting.

SMART WIRING“Smart wiring” is a term commonly used todescribe home wiring that may include, but isnot limited to, one or more of the following:• structured telephone, data (Internet) and

TV cabling.• home security — intruder detection, back-

to-base monitoring or CCTV (Closed CircuitTelevision).

• home theatre and/or in-house audio/videodistribution.

• home automation — “intelligent”

lighting, automatic/remote control ofelectrical appliances, HVAC (Heating,Ventilation and Air Conditioning),lawn/garden irrigation, etc.

• paging/intercom, which may includemusic distribution and CCTV.Such systems may be wired separately by

different installers or may be included in atotal wiring package offered by aSmartWired builder or contractor. We areonly touching on some of the possibilitiesfor your smart home.

HOME DISTRIBUTION UNITThe HDU is the central hub of the smart wiringnetwork of the home. Typically it is a steelcabinet installed in the garage with a lock thathouses all of the passive and active

equipment. All services enter and exit thiscabinet. This allows for total flexibility to thehome owner in the future. It should be of aminimum size of 405mm wide (to fitbetween studs), 600mm high and 112mmdeep. Typically the bottom of the cabinet ismounted 1200mm above finished floor leveland is recessed into the wall with bottomand top ventilation into the wall cavity.

It needs to be large enough to cater forany active device such as alarm panels, television amplifiers, data switches and240Vac power outlets and have enoughroom for cable looms, IDC blocks, splittersand couplers.

It is the responsibility of theBuilder/Consumer/Contractor to provide thesmart wiring and Home Distribution Unit.

QUESTIONS TO ASK YOURNOMINATED BUILDER• Is the tradesmen installing your cabling

accredited to do smart wiring™ andcabling?

• Will we have the opportunity to sit downand discuss the design and installation?

• Will the recognised specialist doing theinstallation have appropriatequalifications and experience?

• Will our installation be labelled for futuretechnicians?

• Will my job be cabled with category 5for now or category 6 cable to futureproof my home?

• What is the extended warranty period forparts and labour?

A leading security consultant, and aqualified electronics technician withover 20 years of experience, knows

some of the challenges that a school can pose.Having worked in a number of Australia’snewest schools for over a decade says itssystem flexibility and simplicity which is crucial.

“These schools have multiple buildings andlarge numbers of staff, many of who changeon a regular basis,” Colin said. “Any system hasgot to be both easy to use and easy to install, while providing guaranteed, never failprotection day or night.”

“The system I choose had to be flexibleenough to accommodate the differencesbetween schools, from smaller to largerschools. The largest site covered a 56 acresand the smallest school was only a fifth of thatsize, flexibility to expand the system wasextremely important.”

Colin said “I chose the Reliance SecuritySystem (A Hills Holdings product) as it is costeffective and fitted the specifications for all sites. The Hills Reliance can be easily expanded for theclients future needs. It also has importantfeatures like full room control and monitoring,as well as silent alarms to allow guards to

respond without scaring off intruders so theymay be caught unawares.1

“The Reliance system has already proved tobe successful, with a number of intrudersapprehended and detained before valuableassets were stolen, damaged or destroyed.”

Simplicity is also a key factor given thenumber of regular teachers and securitypersonnel with access and staff changing on aregular basis. Schools are usually monitored via acentrally graded monitoring station.

The system also supports automatic armingand disarming for system integrity. Add-onaccessories like wireless expanders and sensors, card readers for access control, keychain remotecontrol and a range of code pads, including theelegant VoiceNav that uses a Personal VoiceGuide to ‘talk’ users through the whole system.

“One of Reliance’s biggest advantages for methough is that every panel is identical to use andprogram no matter what the size,” Colin said.“That makes using the system so easy and alsoreduces any problems between home and work.”

“I was also relieved that Reliance comes with acommunication buss that can run out up to 4kmfrom the main controller, which means no greatinstallation issues to confront.”

SECURITY IN SCHOOLS

Schools are a tough environment for anysecurity system, the Hills Reliance (NX) isearning top marks in some of Australia’snewest-and biggest-facilities.

1 When the Hills System is being monitored, the system gives teaching staff reassurance and security of havingadditional support at the press of a button if any major incidences occur at the school.

W ork became even moremobile when laptops, mobilephones and now tablets like the

iPad made it simple to be always connected tothe office. Called everything from e-work,telework or telecommuting, it’s now bigbusiness as more people take up the option, and companies and government get morecomfortable with the idea.

In fact it’s predicted that one in eightAustralians will be working full time fromhome by 2020 and with many of theminvolved in a ‘micro-business’ with under fivestaff. The country already has over a million ofthem now and that’s expected to save familiesmoney on daily commutes, improve ourproductivity and do good things for theenvironment as well.

It’s being helped along by technology ofcourse. Telco’s such as iiNet, Internode,iPrimus, Optus & Telstra are rapidly ramping upfaster internet connections and dedicatedservices to home businesses, while companieslike Microsoft, Dell, Canon or Lenovo keepreinventing personal computers, printers andscanners, embedding much smarter softwareto let us create documents, graphics and websites that once could only have been achievedwith big office resources.

It’s meant a home office or home study ifyou like-revolution. Banished are many of thebulky machines and filing cabinets as thedigital revolution ushered in electronic back-upand storage. Expect that to get even morestreamlined as we start to lodge commercialand personal information in the “cloud”-basically web-based services that housecontent remotely so that it’s on tap whereveryou happen to be.

The gadgets we work on are also getting

smaller and better looking too. Large desk topcomputers have morphed in to stylishnetbooks, notebooks and tablets andincreasingly those multi-tasking smart phonesfrom the likes of Apple or Google that not onlycome with much bigger data capacity andconvergence, but are absolutely portable.

Some of the biggest impacts on homeworkare now coming from video-basedcommunication, allowing us to take part inmeetings as if we were there in the room, beit locally or on the other side of the world. While services like Skype started to make thata reality on our laptops a while ago, the moveto add it to televisions is really putting thehome office on the big screen. Dedicated,High Definition video conferencing – onceonly possible for large companies is alsowithin reach of the home as prices falldramatically, the equipment shrinks in size andthe broadband gets big enough to handle it.

Which means the home office is no longera crowded nook in the hallway or an add-on ina spare bedroom, but a dedicated, greatlooking space all on its own. Many developerssaw that trend coming and now either buildthem in right from the word go in new homesor apartments, or offer it as an option toconsider. Builders and installers are increasinglyon board too and you should always makesure you talk to them about wiring to potentialoffice space so that you not only have plenty ofdata outlets, but have options for smarterlighter, multi-room audio, wall or ceilingspeakers, security and climate control.

In fact with fibre on the outside wall andthe proper wiring and wireless optionsticked off inside your office can be part of awhole house network that blends work andlifestyle perfectly.
