First, let me say THANK YOU!
Our first quarter of 2013 has been a huge success with all our members participating in all areas to help move our association forward.
A few successful highlights from our first quarter of 2013:• Our 1st Ever PAC Clay Shoot was a success! We were able to raise $4,000 towards our PAC Initiatives getting us one step closer to our $50,000 goal for 2013. What a great time and great opportunity to grow our PAC Funds, PAC Investors and bring more awareness to our members of the importance PAC plays in our day-to-day business operations.
• Calling all PAC Investors it’s time to renew for 2013! Plus, we want NEW PAC Investors!!! It’s easy to join, contact Hector Morales at SAAA to be an investor for as low as $29. • On Legislative Day we were able to represent our industry with over 72 attendees, by far the largest representation of any city. Our supporters believe in supporting or opposing legislative issues that can strongly impact our business as we strengthen our voice to Legislative Representatives.
• NAA Assembly of Delegates attended Capitol Conference in Washington DC to continue to take our message of “Taking Political Involvement to the Next Level.”
• Membership Drive successfully recruited 51 new members! We still have an opportunity to bring in new members for our association through year end reaching our goal of 85 new members for 2013. Please contact [email protected] or check saaaonline.org.
• The Industry Achievement Awards on February 28th was fantastic, from the skit, all the way to recognizing all our outstanding individuals from select management companies with 478 attendees in the room cheering them on. Con-gratulations to all the Winners!
• Our Speakeasy Casino Night was an unforgettable evening of fun! Thanks to our Product Services Council for making this event a great night to remember!
• Maintenance Mania continues to be a success with 72 participants this year! Thanks to all who helped make this event so memorable for our fantastic maintenance teams! Our winner has the opportunity to compete at the National Championship to be held at the annual NAA Education Conference & Exposition.

DELFINA AGUILAR2013 PSC PRESIDENT | SAN ANTONIO APARTMENT ASSOCIATION
PSC MESSAGE
The first quarter of 2013 has quickly passed us by, but not without the fun and ex-citement of two amazing events. In February we enjoyed our SAAA Speakeasy Casino Night. Much thanks to our Casino Night chairs: Liz Johnson, April Chapman, Nicole Plumber, and the entire Casino Night committee for put-ting on such a great event. The event was not only filled with game tables, money wheels, and slot machines, but this year we had the addition of a cash cube and photo booth. We had several attendees who kicked up the level of fun by dressing up in zoot suits and flapper dresses with feather headbands and all. If you were not able to attend this year, please take some time to log onto the SAAA website where you can get a glimpse of what the event is all about and hopefully we will see you there next year.
The fun did not stop there. Ready, set, go! Our SAAA Maintenance Appreciation Chili Cook-Off was held on March 23rd at the Helotes Fairgrounds. We had record attendance, with 1000 people who pre-registered, and even more that showed as the sun came out, and the won-derful smell of all the great food flowed through the Spring air. The theme for the Cook-Off this year was NASCAR, and once again people got into the spirit by decorating their booths and wearing their checker print and racing gear. There was a variety of great tasting chili, awesome desserts, and everything you could think of from hot wings to shaved ice to help cool you down. Thank you to our Cook-Off Chairs: Scott Milgrom, Emery Johnson, Jason Hall and their committee members for a wonderful job on another unbeatable Cook-Off. I also want to extend a con-gratulations to all of our winners!
As we roll into the second half of our year, PSC will begin working on our SAAA Annual Expo which will be held on
September 19, 2013 at the Freeman Expo Hall. Booth and Sponsorships for the 2013 SAAA Expo will go on sale live on the SAAA website beginning May, 2013. Don’t be late, be sure to follow the Yellow Brick Road to one of our biggest events of the year.
The success of these events would not be possible with-out the support and dedication of the SAAA Staff. PSC greatly appreciates all that you do and the heart that goes behind all the planning and preparing of each event. You never fail to go the extra mile. Thank you to all the mem-bers as well for your participation, commitment and loyalty to SAAA. “Success is the sum of small efforts repeated day in and day out” - Robert Collier, and together we con-tinue to move forward to multiply the success.

We have just finished the first quarter of the year and it has been a very busy and very successful one. I want to thank every
one of you who has taken part in making this an amazing first quarter. Our industry has proven that we are a united profession, and we have demonstrated this very clearly to our elected representatives—which is of extreme impor-tance if we are to keep our industry flourishing. The following expresses the busyness and the success.
State LegislatureThe beginning of this year marked the begin-ning of the 83rd Texas Legislative Session in Austin; and for our industry, this means we have Legislative Day; and let me tell you, it was a huge success! Legislative Day took place on February 20th; it was the first day of Texas Apartment Association’s Legislative Confer-ence in Austin. This day is dedicated to meet-ing with our state representatives and senators in the State Capitol. It’s a time to express to our elected officials our industry’s concerns and wishes; and to voice support or opposition to any legislation that is making its way through the legislative process. This day also serves as an opportunity to join other industry profes-sionals to discuss concerns and best practic-es. Our San Antonio multifamily rental housing industry had the strongest showing in all of the state, we had 72 industry professionals make the trip to Austin. Everyone took part in meet-ing in a group setting with representatives’ of-fices; and, everyone had a great time, just ask anyone that went on the trip.
Congress and D.C.This year’s National Apartment Association’s (NAA) annual Capitol Conference took place from March 10th to the 14th. This conference takes place in Washington, D.C. and is attend-ed by members and affiliate staff from through-out the country. It’s a time for members and staff to connect and discuss legislative items happening locally, statewide and nationally.
SAAA had a delegation of Board Members at-tend the conference as well as executive direc-tor Teri Bilby and myself. We had the opportu-nity to meet with NAA staff and with members of the NAA Board of Directors. Further, we were successful in meeting with our San An-tonio congressional representatives to discuss our industry’s concerns and interests. This was very similar to the State’s Legislative Day, but this was at the national level. These meetings also were a big success.
In March I was also able to spend a few days representing SAAA and our industry in the Greater San Antonio Chamber of Commerce’s and the San Antonio Hispanic Chamber of Commerce’s annual SA to DC trip. This is also an opportunity to meet with congressional legislators; but also with federal departments and agencies, and with presidential executive level staff. Further it’s also an opportunity to strengthen relationships with area business leaders, which is always helpful to our industry whenever we find ourselves in need of support for any of our industry’s concerns.
City Council RacesThe San Antonio City Council Races are un-der way at full speed. There are several races that will be very close: District 3, District 5, and District 8. Our Government Affairs Committee interviewed candidates for each of those rac-es and made recommendations to the SAAA Board of Directors as to which candidates would best represent our industry’s interests. The SAAA Board of Directors endorsed a can-didate in each of these districts. Here are the SAAA endorsed candidates: District 3 – Leti-cia Ozuna; District 5 – David Medina; and Dis-trict 8 – Rolando Briones. Districts 3 and 8 are poised to be very close races, so your vote will make a difference. In addition, the Board en-dorsed the following incumbents: District 1- Ivy Taylor; District 2- Diego Bernal; District 4- Rey Saldana; District 6- Ray Lopez; District 7- Cris Medina; District 9- Elisa Chan; and District 10- Carlton Soules. Please act on your civic duty and vote; and we strongly recommend that you
seriously consider voting for those candidates/incumbents whom our Board of Directors has endorsed.
SAAA will get involved as an organization and will be recruiting association members to vol-unteer in these campaigns. If you’d like get in-volved and take part in any of these campaigns please contact me and I will make sure that you play a role in these races.
A few notes: The next Political Action Committee (PAC) event will be the SAAA PAC Business Ex-change and Wine Tasting, which will take place on May 14th and is open only to those who register. It’s an amazing opportunity for asso-ciate/vendor members to pitch their business in front of decision makers of owner member companies.
In September we will hold our SAAA PAC Si-lent Auction (we brought it back this year after receiving a lot of feedback from our members) during the SAAA Expo. In October we will hold our annual David Guin Memorial Golf Tournament for SAAA PAC, stay tuned for de-tails on that fun-filled and fabulous event.
Please keep checking the Government Affairs section of our website www.saaaonline.org for upcoming events, current affairs and issues of interest to our industry. As always, my door is open to everyone if I can help with any con-cerns or if you have ideas you would like to share.
