  • Steeped in

    history The oldest part that still stands today dates back to

    1641 and was part of the cloisters of a convent,

    which was known over time as the Convent Des

    Clarisses. The chapel was blessed by the prieur de

    Saint-Barthélemy in 1658. In 1674, the sisters of

    Saint–Claire commissioned the construction of a

    chapel to assist in the education of the young girls

    of the City of Confolens and the property appears as convent of Saint-Clair in the 18th century plan of

    the city.

    The abbot Nanglard had, about the same time, also advised of the establishment of the ‘filles de Notre-Dame’, which is part of a Poitou

    monastery, and that they were settled in Confolens

    in the establishment des Clarisses which was later passed on to the sisters of Saint-Mathe. In 1792, the hospital on Rue de Soleil in Confolens transferred their premises into the convent Des

    Clarisses which was shortly further expanded and

    enlarged and used as a hospice. The sisters of La

    Sagesse were then established there in 1817 and

    opened a school and orphanage in 1879. In 1895,

    the Lagrange-Labajouderie Legacy had enabled the

    renovation and extension of the hospital sections and the buildings on Rue de Labajouderie date from that period. The most recent part is the second floor of the building adjoining the chapel, which was constructed later between 1931 and 1932.
