ThisHandbookprovidesinformationaboutourYear10to12programs.DuringYears10,11and12weencouragestudentstodevelopindependence,selfconfidenceandresponsibilityfortheirownlearningandbehaviour.Studentsaretreatedasyoungadultsandapositiveworkingatmosphereexists,withanemphasisonco-operationandmutualrespect.

ReservoirHighoffersaYear7to10VictorianCurriculumprogramaswellastheVictorianCertificateofEducation(VCE)Units1to4,VET(VocationalEducationandTraining)unitsandtheVictorianCertificateofAppliedLearning(VCAL).

Whenmakingchoicesstudentsareencouragedtoconsiderstudies that:• theyfindinteresting;• they are excited about meeting the challenges the unitoffers;• leadtoemploymenttheyfindappealing;• preparethemforfurthertraining/tertiarycourses thattheyareconsidering.

ReservoirHighhasaCareersDepartmentwhichconsistsofaCareersandVocationalEducationCoordinatorandtwoCareersTeacherswhoareavailabletohelpstudentsdeveloptheirManagedIndividualPathways(MIPs)plans.Thefollowingisalistofwebsitesstudentsmightfinduseful:

Studentshavemanyopportunitiestoshowleadership.WeselectSchoolCaptainsandaStudentRepresentativeCommittee(SRC)annually.Studentsarealsoencouragedtoparticipateinsportteams,debatingteams,theannualSchoolProductionandmanyotherextracurricularactivities.

Wehaveanincreasingnumberofoverseasstudentsjoiningourschool,whichhasenhancedourculturaldiversity.

SomeoftheresourcesavailabletostudentsatReservoirHighincludeastateoftheartlibrary,asupervisedSeniorStudyHall,electronicwhiteboardsand/orplasmaTVsineveryroom,fullsetsofcomputersinhalfoftheroomsintheschoolaswellaslaptopsontrolleys,aperformingartscentre,accesstoafourcourtBasketballStadiumandafullyequippedweightroom/gym.

Student Responsibilities

ReservoirHighpridesitselfonitscultureofrespect-behavioursthatarekind,safeandfair.

Allstudentsareexpectedto• respecttheirteachersandtheschool• respecttheirfellowstudents• respectthemselves

Thismeansthatstudentsmustfollowallschoolrulespromptlyandpolitely.Theymustneverinterferewiththerightsofotherstolearn.Infact,itistheschool’sexpectationthatstudentswillactivelyrespectandsupporteachother.Bullyingordisrespectfulbehaviourwillneverbetolerated.

Italsomeansthattheschoolexpectseverystudenttostrivetoachievesuccess.Ofcourse,ourmajorpurposeisacademicsuccessbutwealsorewardstudentswhostrivetoexcelinPerformingArts,debating,sportorindeed,anyotherfield.

Attendance

ReservoirHighstudentsareexpectedtoattendALLtimetabledclassesandremainatschoolallday.Studentsarenottoleavetheschoolduringthedayunlesstheyhaveapproval.

ThetotalattendanceforaUnitofStudyisanimportantfactorindeterminingSatisfactoryCompletionoftheUnit.Theschoolhassetanattendancerequirementof90%forallunits.Thismeansthatifunauthorisedabsencesexceed10%foranyunit,thenanNresultistheschoolpolicy.

Unauthorisedabsences(e.g.notexplainedbyadoctor’scertificate)maybedealtwithasadisciplinarymatteraswellaspossiblycontributingtoanUnsatisfactoryresult.

ExcessiveunauthorisedabsenceswillalsoputYouthAllowancespaymentsatrisk.

Approved reasons for absences are:• Medical–doctorscertificaterequired• Bereavement–sub-schoolmustbeinformed• Schoolchoice–anythingapprovedbysub-schoolpriorto absence• ExtendedHoliday(Year7to10only)–withpriornoticeonly• Religious/CulturalObservance–Onedayonly

Unapproved reasons for absences from classes are defined as:• Illness–ParentApprovalwithoutamedicalcertificate• ParentChoice,E.g. o visiting relatives ogoingshopping o missed bus ofamilymatters oreligious/culturalobservance(ifmorethanoneday) odrivinglessons/licence/permit oextendedholidays(Year11&12students)

Absencesaretobeexplaineduponreturntoschool(authorised)byamedicalcertificate.Itisthestudent’sresponsibilitytoensurethatabsencesareauthorised.Allabsencesarerecordedasunauthoriseduntilanacceptableexplanationisreceived.Parentswillbenotifiedbyphoneand/orletterwhenstudentsaccumulate3ormoredaysofunexplainedabsence.

Studentsshouldalsomakeittheirresponsibilitytoseekoutworkmissedduringtheirabsence;whereanabsenceisknowninadvancestudentsshouldinformtheirclassteachersothatworkmaybeobtainedfortheknownabsence.

Deadlines and Submissions of Work

Allstudentsneedtomeetspecifieddeadlinesforthesubmissionofrequiredwork.Toensurestudentssuccessfullymeet deadlines they should:• submitallworkdirectlytotheirteacher,preferablyina timetabledclass;and• ensurearecordoftheworkbeingsubmittediskeptby thestudentortheteacherorboth(studentsshouldusetheir plannerforthis).

Uniform

Uniformiscompulsoryandshouldbewornwithprideatalltimes.Thisincludestravellingtoandfromschool.Forcurrentuniformsupplies/detailscontact: AcademyUniforms238WolseleyPlace,ThomastownPh: 9460 8011

AuniformguidecanbeobtainedfromtheGeneralOffice.Forsafetyreasons,hairbelowshoulderlengthmaybeexpectedtobeneatlytiedbackforcertainactivities(e.g.Science/Technologypracticalwork).

If,foranyreason,studentsareoutofuniform,theymustreporttothesub-schoolofficeimmediatelyonarrivalatschoolwithanoteofexplanation.

SportuniformcannotbeworntoandfromschoolduringthedaywhenastudenthasaPE/Sport/Danceclassonthatday.Studentsmustchangeintotheirsportuniformatthestartofclassandbackintonormaluniformattheendofclass.

Appointments in School Time

Studentswhowishtoleaveschoolearlyneedtosignoutatthesubschooloffice.Writtenevidenceintheformofanotefromaparentofguardian,oranappointmentcard,mustbesupplied.Itisexpectedthatmedicalandotherappointmentswillbemadeoutofschoolhourswherepracticable.

Bicycles

Bicyclesbroughttoschoolshouldbeplacedinthebicycleshedandlocked.Bicyclesmaynotberiddenintheschoolgrounds.Theschoolcannotacceptresponsibilityfordamagedorstolenbicycles.Studentsarerequiredbylawtowearapprovedhelmets.

Exit Students

Astudenttransferringschool,orleavingschool,mustnotifytheCareersTeacherandtheircoordinatorinadvance.Exitformproceduresmustbecompleted,involvingcounsellingregardingpost-schooloptions,settlingunpaidaccountsandreturningLibraryBooksorotherschoolproperty.

Compass

TheParentPortal(Compass)shouldberegularlycheckedbyallparents/guardiansandstudents. Attendance,scheduledclass,teachercorrespondence,reportscanallbeaccessedthroughCompass.

ID Cards

AllstudentswillbeprovidedwithaphotoIDcard.IDCardsareessentialforproofofidentityandhelpmaintainasafeenvironmentintheschool.StudentsmustcarrytheirIDcardatalltimes.IDcardsarerequiredtobedisplayedduringallexams.

Lockers

Eachstudentisallocatedalargelockerwhichmustbekeptinexcellentcondition.Eachstudentistoprovidehis/herowngoodqualitypadlock.Theschoolsellshigh-qualitypadlocks,availableatthegeneraloffice.

Newsletters to Parents

Thenewsletterisanimportantmeansofcommunicationbetweentheschoolanditscommunity.AnelectronicversionofthenewsletterissentthroughCompass.

Parent Contact and Reporting

Writtenreportstoparentsareissuedaminimumofsixtimesayear,mid-semesterprogressreportsandtwosemesterfullreports.ParentsmayinitiateinterviewswithteachersatothertimesbyappointmentthroughCompass.

Personal Records

Anychangeofaddress,phonenumber(homeorwork),alternativeemergencynumber,doctor,etc,mustbegiventotheOfficeassoonaspossible.Thisinformationisvitalincaseofaccidentorotheremergency.

Schoolbags

Bagsaretobekeptinlockersandarenotpermittedinclassesortobecarriedbetweenclasses,atrecessorlunchtime.

Additional Subject CostsSubjectresourcesvaryconsiderablyfromsubjecttosubject.

AnyadditionalsubjectscostswillbeadvisedinTerm3duringthesubjectselectionprocessandfinalisedpriortotheissueofbooklistsinTerm4.

Itisessentialthatalladditionalsubjectscostsarepaidatthecommencementoftheschoolyear.

Year10studentswillstudyatotalof12units.Eachunitis5periodsperweekandofonesemesterlength.Astudent’sprogramwillincludeCoreUnits,Electiveunitsand,insomecases,aVCEUnit1&2.

Theseareunitswhichallstudentsmustcomplete.Theyinclude2unitsofEnglish,2unitsofMathematicsand1unitofHumanities(whichwillincludeWorkEducation).ThereforestudentswillstudyEnglishandMathematicsinbothsemester1and2andHumanitiesinonlyonesemester.MathematicswillbeCOREduringsemesteroneandachoiceofthelevelofmathematicsstudentswishtododuringsemestertwo.StudentswillgettochoosethelevelofMathematicstheywishtodoandtheirchoicewillbereviewedafter the Semester One Year10MathematicsExam.

Elective Units

Tocompletetheirstudyprogram,studentswillalsochoosefromawiderangeofElectiveunitsintheareasoftheArts,EAL,Health,PhysicalEducation,FoodTechnology,Language,Science,InformationTechnology,English,HumanitiesandMaterialsand/orSystemsTechnology.

VCE Access

StudentsmayelecttostudyaVCEUnit1and2aspartoftheirprogram.HoweverentryintoaVCEunitisnotautomatic. Thereareanumberofadvantagestostudentswhodothis:- experiencingVCEearlymightresultinbetter preparationforYear11and12- enablesstudentstodoaVCEUnit3and4inYear11 resultinginanextrasubjectthatcouldcounttowardstheir ATARscore - experiencingthedepthrequiredatVCElevelwould bettermeettheneedsofsomestudents

Studentswillneedtomeettherequirementsofaselectionprocess.Theserequirementsareasfollows:

Assessment

AllYear10studentswillcompleteendofsemesterexamsandreceiveagrade(A+toUG)ontheirreportfortheassessmentitemslistedwiththesubjectdescriptors.

TobeautomaticallypromotedintoVCEyouwillneedtopass10ormoreofthe12units.Ifyoupass8or9unitsyouwillbeabletostudyVCEbutyouwillberequiredtohaveacompulsoryinterviewwithaparentpresenttodiscussyoursubjectchoice.

Other guidelines

IfyoureceiveaNotSatisfactory(N)forasubjectinYear10youwillbeadvisednottodothatsubjectatVCE.ForexampleifyouobtainanNforTechnologyinYear10youwillnotbeallowedtostudyTechnologyinVCE.YoumustpassEnglishinatleastonesemesterduringtheyeartobeconsideredforVCE.AllYear10studentsarerequiredtocompleteaportfolioandsitaninterview.

Itisimportanttothinklong termwhenselectingelectives.Youneedtoconsideryourcareer aspirations,sothinkwhatsubjectswillbestprepareyoufortheYear11studiesyouwillprobablychoose.Also,thinkaboutyourinterests–whatwillyouenjoydoing?Finally,thinkaboutyourstrengths–whatareyougoodat?Studyingsubjectsyouaresuccessfulinbuildsconfidence.

The Arts

Graphic Arts and Design

Studentslearnabouttheroleofvisualcommunicationinsociety.Theywillundertakedesignanddrawingprojectsfocusingontheareasofcommunicationdesign,industrialdesignandenvironmentaldesign.Studentswillbuildondrawingtechniquesandcomputergraphicskillsproducingfinisheddesignsforpresentations.ThiselectiveprovidesgoodpreparationforVCEVisualCommunicationDesignand/orStudioArt.

AssessmentFOLIO–Selectionoffinishedworks.DESIGNPROJECTEXAMINATION

Painting and Drawing

Studentswilldevelopskillswitharangeofdifferentmediatoproduceafolioofartworks.ThepracticalfoliowillbebasedonavarietyofstylesofmodernArtandincludemediaandtechniquessuchaspastel,acrylicpaint,penandink,printmakingandpencildrawing.Eachareastudiedincludeswrittenactivitieswhichexaminetheworkofspecificartistsandartmovements.

AssessmentVISUALDIARYFOLIO–Selectionoffinishedworks.RESEARCHPROJECT EXAMINATION

Photography

Studentswilllearnaboutphotographyasanartfrom.Theywillstudythecreationofimagesandartthroughmanyphotographictechniques.Studentsusedigitalcamerasandmanipulateandgenerateimagesviadigitalimagingoncomputers.Thecourseincludesstudioandoutdoorshootsandresearchintothelifeandworkofphotographers.Theycompleteprojectsinportrait,marketing,promotionandartisticphotography.

AssessmentFOLIO–Selectionoffinishedworks.RESEARCHPROJECTEXAMINATION

3D Studies (including Ceramics)

Studentswilldevelopandlearntechniquesfortheproductionof3Dart.Ceramictechniquescoveredmayinclude:slipdecoratingandcastingtechniques,slabandcoilconstructionandtheuseofdrapemoulds.Bothfunctionalandnon-functionalformswillbecreated.Othermaterialssuchascardboard,plasterandpapermachemayalsobeused.Studentswillstudytheworkofceramicandsculpturalartistsandwillkeeparecordofconstructiontechniquesandresults.

AssessmentFOLIO–Selectionoffinishedworks.VISUALDIARYEXAMINATION

Dance

Studentswilldoexercisestoimproveflexibilityandcoordination.Theywillbeinvolvedinlearningandcreatingdances.Atleastoneoftheirdancesmustbeperformedinfrontofanaudience.Studentswillparticipateinworkshopslookingatdifferentstylesofdanceandwillstudythehistoryofdance.StudentswilldoHipHopskillsandContemporaryandJazz,learningaroutineforeach.Theemphasisisonparticipationandgroupwork.

AssessmentENSEMBLEPERFORMANCE–toaselectedaudienceSTUDENTCHOREOGRAPHYEXAMINATION

Drama

Dramadevelopsstudents’confidencethroughgroupbrainstormingandcollaborationindevelopingideasforperformances.Studentsexploreemotionsviaactionsandreaction,communicatingthroughexpressiveskills,voice,movementandgesture.Technicalskillsrelatedtotheatricalproductionsarealsoexploredbyexperimentingwithspace,characterdevelopmentandstagecraftelementssuchassets,props,costumes,lightingetc.Studentsinvestigatetheatricalstyles,writescripts,readandinterpretoriginaltexts.Theyalsoviewandanalyseprofessionaloramateurperformances.TheypartakeintheDramaFestivalwithotherschools.

AssessmentPERFORMANCE–toaselectedaudience ANALYSISANDEVALUATIONOFAPERFORMANCEEXAMINATION

Music

Inmusicstudentsgettheopportunitytocontinuetolearnthedrums,guitar,singing,keyboardandusingmusictechnologytomakeaCD.Inadditiontoclassroomactivitiesstudentswillalsohavetheopportunitytohaveinstrumentallessonsintheirchosenarea.Otheractivitieswillincludesongwriting,recordingmusic,creatingmusicvideosandthestudyofvariousstylesofmusic.

AssessmentPERFORMANCE–toaselectedaudienceTHEORYTESTEXAMINATION

Film Studies

Thiscourseintroducesstudentstotheanalysisoffilms,incorporatingarangeofgenres.Theywillstudyallaspectsoffilmproductionincluding:screenwriting,cinematography,editingandfilmpromotion.

Product Design: Jewellery Focus

Studentswilllearnarangeofskillsandtechniquesusedintheproductionofcostumeandfinejewellery.Workingtoanswerdesignbriefsstudentswilllearnhowtosourceanduseresearchtocreativelydesignanddevelopuniquepiecesofjewellerywhichwillthenbeputintoproduction.Studentswillinvestigatematerialsandtechniques,learningaboutthepropertiesofavarietyofmaterialsanddevelopingtheskillsneededtomanufacturetheirowndesigns.

Theywilllearntheskillsnecessarytodevelopaportfolioinclusiveofwhatisinvolvedinwritingadesignbrief,designgenerationanddevelopmentandcriticalanalysisandevaluating.

Specialisttoolsandequipmentwillbeusedtoproduceunique,oneoffandbatchproducedpiecesofjewellery.Studentswillworkinavarietyofmaterials,suchasmetalsandplasticsandwillbegiventheopportunitytoelecttoworkinsilverforoneunitofwork.

Product Design and Technology This elective combines the 3 main materials used in design and technology;timber,metalsandplastic.

Studentswilllearnhowtoinvestigateandanalyseavarietyofmaterials,theirpropertiesandthetoolsandmanufacturingtechniquesnecessarytomanipulatethem.

Studentswilllearntothinkcreativelytosolvedesignproblems,producingaportfolioandproductsinanswertoadesignbriefandevaluatingthem.Usingavarietyofproductionprocesses,suchasbatchproductionandvarietyofspecialisttoolsandequipmentstudentswillmanufacturetheirowndesignsinatleast2resistantmaterials.Animportantpartofthiscourseisthedevelopmentofdrawingskillsandtheproductionofaportfolio.

Assessment of Units 3 & 4

Foreachstudy,students’levelsofachievementforUnits3&4sequenceswillbeassessedusingschoolbasedassessmentandexternalexaminations.

Eachstudywillcontinuetohavethreeassessmentcomponents,eitheroneschoolassessmentandtwoexaminationsortwoschoolassessmentsandoneexamination.ForexampleUnit4EnglishwillhaveoneexaminationandtwoschoolassessmentsandUnit4Mathematicsstudieswillhaveoneschoolassessmentandtwoexaminations.

TheseassessmentswillbereportedasgradesA+toEorUG.Examinationgradesandschoolassessmentgradesarereportedseparately.

General Achievement Test (GAT)

AllstudentsundertakingUnits3&4studiesarerequiredtocompleteanexternallysetandmarkedtestofgeneralisedachievementsintheJuneexaminationperiod.TheGATisanessentialpartofVCEassessmentprocedures.AlthoughGATresultsdonotcountdirectlytowardsVCEresults,theyplayanimportantroleincheckingthatschoolbasedassessmentandexaminationshavebeenaccuratelyassessed.Insomecases,theGATisusedtoderiveascoreifastudentisunabletocompleteanexamduetospecialcircumstances.

Thechoiceofacourseforaparticularcareerdependsuponmanyfactorssomeofwhichare:• Pre-requisitesrequiredbyatertiaryinstitutionand/or employingauthority• Abilitytoachievesuccessinselectedsubjects• Pastperformancesinthesubject• Interestinandenjoymentofthesubject

Selectingthebestcoursemaynotbeaneasydecision.Moststudentsatthislevelhavenotfinalisedtheirideasaboutwhattheywishtodointheiradultlife.

Selecting a Program

Yourprogramshouldbebasedontwoorthreekeystudiescalledfocusunits,andyouwillselectadditionaloneortwounitstocomplementthekeystudiesortobroadentherangeoftheprogram.Belowarethreetypesofprogramsthatareavailable.

1. A Specific Program for a Particular Career

Theseprogramslinkdirectlytotertiarycoursesorotherpreparationforaspecificoccupation.Somestudentshaveidentifiedacareer,whichtheywishtopursue,andtheyselecttheprogramfortheirchosenpathway.Careersteachersandcounsellorswillassistindevelopingtheseprogramsasrequired.

2. A Program for a Broad Interest Area

Somestudentsdonotyethaveaclearideaofaspecificareabutcanidentifygeneralcareerdirectionsandwillbeabletodevelopprogramswhichsuittheseinterests,forexampleScience,Business,Technology,VisualArtsorHumanities.TheStudentGuidetotheVCEcontainsexamplesofprograms.Careersteachersandcounsellorshavesampleprograms.

3. A General Program

What is VCAL ?

• TheVictorianCertificateofAppliedLearningisdesignedfor youngpeopleinYears11and12whoarepreparingforwork orfurthertraining.Itopensvocationalpathwaysforschool leaversandprovidesemploymentopportunitiesin theirchosenindustry.

• VCALisawellestablishedqualificationthatsitsalongside theVCEandisbasedonlearningthatcanbeappliedinthe workplace.Itisa“handson”coursethataimstodevelop skillswhichwillhelpyoungpeoplegetreadyforfurther education,trainingandemployment.

• VCALhasthreelevels-Foundation,IntermediateandSenior. Senioristhehighestlevel.Studentswouldstartatthelevel whichmatchestheirneedsandabilities.Forexample,ifthey startatIntermediatelevelandsuccessfullycompleteit,they canmoveuptotheseniorlevelinYear12.Eachlevelwould normallytakeayeartocomplete.Astudentwhocompletes VCALIntermediateorSeniorinYear11withverygoodresults maybereadytoattemptYear12VCE.Suchastudentwould needtoundertakeVCEEnglishinYear11insteadofVCAL Literacy.

What subjects do I have to do?

StudentswhoundertaketheVCALwilldevelopalearningprogramwiththeirteachersandcareersadvisorbyselectingunitsineachofthefourVCALstrands.Theseare:

1.Literacy and Numeracy. TheYear11VCALclasswill studyFoundationEnglishandFoundationMathematics whicharebothVCEunits.Whereappropriatestudentsare also able to choose VCE English and VCE General Mathematicsinstead.

2.Work Related Skills.Duringclasstimestudentswill undertaketasksandactivitiestoprepareforworkincluding occupationalhealthandsafety,resumesandinterviewskills. Itiscompulsoryalsoforstudentstoundertakeoneofthe followingoptions,onedayaweek,usuallyaWednesday.

Inthisunit,studentsfocusonhowthecharacteristicsofdataandhowitisacquired,managed,manipulatedandinterpretedtomeetarangeofneeds.Therearetwoareasofstudy:Organisationsanddatamanagement,andDataanalytics:drawingconclusionsandtheydrawonthefourconceptsthatunderpinthestudy.
