National Breast Cancer Awareness Month -Crowdfunding for Metastatic Breast Cancer

Research

October is National Breast Cancer Awareness Month and Komen is proud toannounce opportunities in which the public can more directly engage in researchWe recently announced a new Metastatic Breast Cancer (MBC) Research Grantcrowdfunding opportunity where anyone can donate funds to support a researchproject or researcher of their choice Learn more about some of our talentedresearchers and their Komen-funded work on the Komen MBC crowdfunding pagewhere donations will be used to support metastatic breast cancer research KomenScholars Dr Yibin Kang Dr Alan Welm and Dr Danny Welch are currently featuredin this campaign alongside Career Catalyst Research grantee Dr Maria SoledadSosa

Donations received for this initiative will go further thanks to a matching commitmentfrom Odonate Therapeuticstrade a company dedicated to the development oftherapeutics that improve and extend the lives of patients with cancer Odonate andan affiliated partner will match on a dollar-for-dollar basis all donations toward thisinitiative received between October 2 2017 and December 31 2017 up to amaximum of $15 million

Komen Participated in the Rally for MedicalResearch

The 2017 Rally for Medical Research was a Capitol Hill Day event to call on ournations policymakers to make funding for the National Institutes of Health (NIH) anational priority and raise awareness about the importance of continued investmentin medical research Established in 2013 this event brings together nearly 300national organizations including Susan G Komen At this yearrsquos event held onSeptember 13 and 14 Komen-funded grantees Drs Adam Soloff and Rachel Walkerjoined Komen staff to rally for increased medical research funding

Komen-Supported Website Improves Accessto Information about Investigational

Treatments

As part of its continued commitment to reducing breast cancer deaths Komenhelped the Reagan-Udall Foundation and the Food and Drug Administration (FDA)develop the Expanded Access Navigator website The new online tool serves as aclearinghouse of information and resources about Expanded Access (EA) allowingpatients and their doctors to more easily access information that could impacttreatment decisions Read more about Komenrsquos support of the EA Navigator and theimpact this resource may have on those patients ineligible for clinical trials butsearching for additional treatment options

Komens Annual Graduate Training inDisparities Research Meeting

Komenrsquos Annual Graduate Training in Disparities Research (GTDR) Meeting was ahuge success This meeting which is the only assembly of breast cancer disparitiesresearchers in the United States took place in Atlanta Georgia on September 24-25in conjunction with the Komen-supported 10th Annual AACR Conference on TheScience of Cancer Health Disparities in RacialEthnic Minorities and the MedicallyUnderserved The 2017 GTDR Annual Meeting was the largest in the history of theprogram with more than 65 attendees from 15 current programs who were alsojoined by Komen Scientific Advisory Board Member Lisa Newman MD MPH andmembers of the Komen Greater Atlanta Affiliate The program featured keynotepresentations from both senior scientists in the field and trainees from individualresearch programs The meeting also included poster sessions and provided anetworking opportunity for trainees and Principal Investigators

In a Journal of American MedicalAssociation Oncology publicationKomen Scholar Dr Lajos Pusztaiidentified a subset of triple negativebreast cancers (TNBCs) that couldbenefit from immunotherapy TheseTNBC tumors have many immunecells which means immunotherapycould help ldquoteachrdquo the immune cells tobetter recognize and kill neighboringtumor cells

TNBC tumors can be resistant toradiation therapy In a recent NatureBreast Cancer publication KomenScholar Dr Lori Pierce and colleagueshave found a promising new treatmenttarget for these resistant tumors Thiscould mean new therapeutic options forpatients who have this aggressivebreast cancer type

The 2017 Rally for Medical Research was a Capitol Hill Day event to call on ournations policymakers to make funding for the National Institutes of Health (NIH) anational priority and raise awareness about the importance of continued investmentin medical research Established in 2013 this event brings together nearly 300national organizations including Susan G Komen At this yearrsquos event held onSeptember 13 and 14 Komen-funded grantees Drs Adam Soloff and Rachel Walkerjoined Komen staff to rally for increased medical research funding

Komen-Supported Website Improves Accessto Information about Investigational

Treatments

As part of its continued commitment to reducing breast cancer deaths Komenhelped the Reagan-Udall Foundation and the Food and Drug Administration (FDA)develop the Expanded Access Navigator website The new online tool serves as aclearinghouse of information and resources about Expanded Access (EA) allowingpatients and their doctors to more easily access information that could impacttreatment decisions Read more about Komenrsquos support of the EA Navigator and theimpact this resource may have on those patients ineligible for clinical trials butsearching for additional treatment options

Komens Annual Graduate Training inDisparities Research Meeting

Komenrsquos Annual Graduate Training in Disparities Research (GTDR) Meeting was ahuge success This meeting which is the only assembly of breast cancer disparitiesresearchers in the United States took place in Atlanta Georgia on September 24-25in conjunction with the Komen-supported 10th Annual AACR Conference on TheScience of Cancer Health Disparities in RacialEthnic Minorities and the MedicallyUnderserved The 2017 GTDR Annual Meeting was the largest in the history of theprogram with more than 65 attendees from 15 current programs who were alsojoined by Komen Scientific Advisory Board Member Lisa Newman MD MPH andmembers of the Komen Greater Atlanta Affiliate The program featured keynotepresentations from both senior scientists in the field and trainees from individualresearch programs The meeting also included poster sessions and provided anetworking opportunity for trainees and Principal Investigators

TNBC tumors can be resistant toradiation therapy In a recent NatureBreast Cancer publication KomenScholar Dr Lori Pierce and colleagueshave found a promising new treatmenttarget for these resistant tumors Thiscould mean new therapeutic options forpatients who have this aggressivebreast cancer type

In a Journal of American MedicalAssociation Oncology publicationKomen Scholar Dr Lajos Pusztaiidentified a subset of triple negativebreast cancers (TNBCs) that couldbenefit from immunotherapy TheseTNBC tumors have many immunecells which means immunotherapycould help ldquoteachrdquo the immune cells tobetter recognize and kill neighboringtumor cells

TNBC tumors can be resistant toradiation therapy In a recent NatureBreast Cancer publication KomenScholar Dr Lori Pierce and colleagueshave found a promising new treatmenttarget for these resistant tumors Thiscould mean new therapeutic options forpatients who have this aggressivebreast cancer type
