FLOOR PLAN SCALE: ⅛” = 1’-0” IDEC STUDENT DESIGN COMPETITION SMOOTH SAILING INDEPENDENCE DESIGN STATEMENT: Smooth Sailing Independence will allow those diagnosed with ASD to learn how to complete everyday tasks and life skills independently. The facility forms a space where anyone can feel at ease and able to adapt to the training rooms that prepare them for real-world experiences. Change is difficult to deal with, so implementing routines, organization, and sensory items benefit those who are becoming independent adults. Once the techniques and skills are taught, the individuals with ASD should be able to function on their own to the best of their ability. DESIGN GOALS: ● Design a building using ADA specifications to ensure easy access for everyone. ● Create a safe and comfortable environment to learn independence. ● Provide multiple training areas to mimic real-life situations. ● Implement colors and textures to accommodate their sensory needs. ● Incorporate various sensory products in a space to resolve overload and enhance stimulation. PLANNING PROCESS SMOOTH SAILING INDEPENDENCE STORE FRONT ELEVATION SCALE: ⅛” = 1’-0” RESEARCH: Location - 3% of children living in New Jersey were diagnosed with ASD in April of 2018. In Ocean County, there were about 2,500 cases. This number has tripled in the last 14 years and will continue to rise as the population increases. Once these individuals grow up and graduate, they need help preparing for their future as they start to live more independently. Sensory Accommodations - Colors like soft blues and earthtones create a calming effect rather than a bright red that could cause agitation. Lighting should not be too bright, therefore dimmable settings will be available throughout the space. Sensory overload can lead to distress, so the sensory room will have items such as a weighted blanket, vestibular swings, bean bags, and noise cancelling headphones to help with relaxation. Others may need more stimulation, so a mini trampoline and fidget toys allow their brains to become energized for the day.
