RESEARCH THAT IMPACTS PERSONS AND NATIONS, IN

EVERY AC DISCIPLINEENGAGEEngagement is a pre-requisite to research relevance. AC promotes research that engages with understanding our past through the study of history and Biblical hermeneutics; the present through studying society, economics, business, and education practices; persons, through exploration of theology, spirituality, and critical thinking; peoples, through intercultural studies and communication, and places, through research across geographical contexts and collaboration across institutions and disciplines.

ENLIGHTENEnlightenment is the raison d’être of education and research: research that illuminates the mind and enhances relationships; demands imagination that pushes the boundaries of the known; integrates new knowledge with that which is known in order to create deeper and holistic understanding; initiates the pursuit of enlightenment in areas that are unexplored or challenging; propels innovation in every discipline.

EMPOWERFoundational to AC’s Christian ethos is the empowering view that each human being is of inherent value. It follows that AC promotes research that is unfettered by prejudices toward people groups, unafraid to ask questions that challenge the status quo; uncompromising in values of ethics and fairness; unprecedented in inclusiveness and the promotion of peace; and unabated by challenges or biases.

ENRICHDiscovery should enrich as much as it enlightens. Thus AC promotes: research that transforms the individual through new understanding; discoveries that are transferred into practical application; research that transcends current practices in education, business, and ministry; methods that transcript Christian values; and, where applicable, findings that translate across cultures and contexts.

EQUIPAC is committed to active and applied research: research that equips individuals and communities by supplying answers to social questions, discovering sustainable solutions, supporting the care of people and the environment; salvaging the integrity of the disenfranchised, and summoning further research and action.

Kevin HoveyMA(Missiology)

Kevin’s academic pathway was borne out of the challenges of field experience as a missionary in Papua New Guinea. A Master of Arts in Missiology provided theoretical underpinnings for the practical breakthroughs that were occurring on-field with his thesis winning the anthropology award. This was outworked in the redevelopment of training programs in PNG, and missionary training program in Australia, which has since

gone global. Kevin is currenly working on his PhD focused on the missiological insights of the Australian missiologist, Alan Tippett. An ordained minister with the Australian Christian Churches, Kevin teaches in the areas of pastoral ministry, cross-cultural ministry, and missions.

A keen student of Scripture—he was chair of the Mark Group, SBL, for many years—his research interests include hermeneutics, the history of ideas (particularly how Christianity’s overturning of antiquity led to the modern world), and the implications of the biblical narrative, its controlling metaphors, and God’s faithful character, for a genuinely Christian understanding of theology, business, and design.

EARLY CAREER RESEARCHERS

Caroline’s 2016 doctoral thesis (Australian College of Theology) examined the role of the Servant in the ‘Servant Songs’ of Isaiah, with an eye to the whole book of Isaiah and the Old Testament. She is particularly interested in Hebrew poetry and how the details of language work in relation to meaning, including wordplay, soundplay and allusion. She has continued with research in this area, while her Old Testament teaching has sparked interest in the purpose of the book of Psalms and in the intertextuality of Samuel.
