Documentary Research

Similar Product I found this similar product on

you tube a 5 minute documentary about the

homeless on the streets of Portsmouth made by university

students.

From this similar product I have seen some techniques and lots

of ideas for music and fonts.

Title and Credits

I have decided to go with a black and white theme as I feel this is most fitting for the topic.

Fonts and Colours

FONT font Font Font Font Font Font

I I have decide to choice a very simple and formal font of Arial it’s a very

well know and used font which people recognize and is easy to read.

With my earlier project I spend a lot of time researching fonts, looking on the internet to download a shocking and different font this caused problems

choosing a simple but effective options this project.

Voice OverResearch and Script

Story Board and ScriptThis is the link to my blog where there is a video of me

explaining my story board

http://michellemaxted.blogspot.com/2009/12/3-december.html

I cannot script the response when interviewing the homeless but this the script for the questions.

In this documentary I will be finding out the real story of London’s homeless

So how long have you been homeless? What was your reason? What happened?

Tell us about your life on the street?Do you think you will get out of the situation?

Have you received any help?Where do you see yourself in 5 years time?

Conclusion (unfortanty I will have to script this after the interviews)I am allowing change in the script as I do not know what to expect with the

responses.

Images

This are my first edits of my images that I was going to use for my advert and newspaper focus however I due to the camera I was using when shooting them the quality

isn’t good enough for them to be blown up to A4 size. Also I had other design ideas that came later in the process of

project after more research.

So I came up with a new idea due to lack of time and planning…….

Issues I resolved

Page 25: Research and Planning, Product and Evaluation

Images You can see here how I came up with the background of the advert cropping down images that I have taken of my friends changing the colour to greyscale then copy and pasting them to come up with this

effect .

Background effect

Page 26: Research and Planning, Product and Evaluation

Newspaper Advert

You can see how I came up with the background on publisher.

This are the conventions I have tried to convey :

-Eye catching

-Lager clear fonts

-Bright colours

-Catchy slogan

-Clear meaning and understanding

Page 27: Research and Planning, Product and Evaluation

Newspaper Focus My original layout and draft of my focus has to be

scrapped due to the change in content of my documentary.

However I still stuck to my original ideas

of sticking to a newspaper focus

conventions with my planned columns

and large title explain what the article is about.

-Large title

-Columns

-Image of chess logo

-Sample of advert

-Formal language

Page 28: Research and Planning, Product and Evaluation

Editing Documentary Editing my documentary was quite simple.

-Changed to black and white

-Transitions used was push and over lap

-Cut 46mins to 5mins

-Music added to beginning titles at end

-Titles where simple centred text in white on black background

-Included image at beginning titles

Page 30: Research and Planning, Product and Evaluation

Feedback I have created a questionnaire to get feedback from my class members.

Page 31: Research and Planning, Product and Evaluation

Evaluation Main issues I have come across with this project…..

Time and Location

Time - I spend too much time on the planning and research of this project, far too much time on youtube looking at similar products. Also I didn’t plan

enough time for editing and though I would be able to get all my images and film in one shot which was wrong.

Location – I planned to do all my filming and photo shoots in London which I was unable to do due to the weather and time. I had to relocate to Chelmsford which wasn’t ideal even though I still found an interesting story I would have preferred to stick to my original plans.

Page 32: Research and Planning, Product and Evaluation

Evaluation Michelle Maxted

Page 33: Research and Planning, Product and Evaluation

In what way does you media product use, develop or challenge forms and

conventions of a real media product? My product has stuck to all the norms

and conventions of a documentary, newspaper advert and focus. Also due

to the topic I have stuck to the conventions of a very formal tones and language. I also kept continuity though

out my projects as this gave it a professional look.

Page 34: Research and Planning, Product and Evaluation

What kind of media institution might be distrusted your product and why?

I feel my product could be consumed on the internet maybe on you tube or even

on a charity website to help the awareness of the homeless issues.

Page 35: Research and Planning, Product and Evaluation

Who would be the audience for your media product?

The audience for my product is really aimed at working class as this issues is more likely to be

more relevant to them. The gender is not an issues as it will effect woman on an emotional

level but males can relate to my interviewer. Age is an issue with this project as I wanted it to be

used to make young people aware of the homeless but the topics mentions such as drugs

are not appropriate for young age groups

Page 36: Research and Planning, Product and Evaluation

How did you attract/address your audience?

I addressed my audience by making it clear the content of the documentary drawing

them in with a touching introduction setting the formal tone and what issues are going

to be raised during the documentary.

Page 37: Research and Planning, Product and Evaluation

What have you learnt about technologies from the process of constructing this product?

I have learnt a lot from this assignment, from improving my general ICT skills when having to

research and write up all information. Also I have improved when using publisher and PowerPoint. My Photoshop skills have widener from my first assignment. My biggest improvement has to be

on with the video cameras and the MAC I movies software which until this project I was unable to use. I can now edit, cut and sound

effect any piece of film.

Page 38: Research and Planning, Product and Evaluation

Looking back at your first task, what do you feel you have learnt in the

progression from it to the full product?

From my first project where I only used photo graphics and editing on

Photoshop and publisher my skills have improved dramatically

Page 39: Research and Planning, Product and Evaluation

What improvements could be made to your main product?

Time was all that was need to improve my product and more knowledge with

the editing. If I suck to my original ideas instead of changing them every

week I think I could have got a very high quality product.

Page 40: Research and Planning, Product and Evaluation

What improvements could be made to your two supporting products?

I think I could have come up with a complex idea for my advert instead of

just a shocking image like a researched but again due to lack of time and

planning. With my focus the layout is very simple I

feel I could have research my print newspaper focuses instead of just the internet I feel I could have learnt more

about the conventions involved.

Page 41: Research and Planning, Product and Evaluation

What improvements could have been made on research and planning?

I spend far too much time researching the wrong things like similar products where I

should have been researching where I could get filming and images from. Also I

was stuck on the idea of getting my filming done in London which didn’t allow for any room for mistakes so in future projects I

have to allow room for mistakes and change of plans.

Page 42: Research and Planning, Product and Evaluation
