Description of problem

Smoking has its real and great impact on the causes of the depth. Every year millions people are dying from illness caused by smoking. The number of death much more than the death caused by AIDS/HIV, tuberculosis, malaria (WHO). Previously in the world the main smokers were men, but now the number of smoking men and women isn't so much different.

Situation in Armenia

Smoking is not so widespread among women as it is among men in Armenia. Though the problem is very actual because the number of smoking women rises, mostly among young women. The majority of the smoking women hide that they smoke.

Today we can see smoking women especially in the bars,

clubs, cafe and other entertainment places in the Kentron

region, because the majority of the entertainment places are

there. So we try to find the reasons of smoking in the

entertainment places in city Yerevan Kenton region.

entertainment place in Yerevan.

Women in the entertainment places are smoking

because it is modern.

Women in the entertainment places are smoking because it is not prohibited.

Women smoke In the entertainment places becouse they don't

want to be differnt from their friends.

The cause of selection of those methods

The necessity to observe the situation and find out some trends on the problem of smoking among young women and also to try to get deeper information on what kind of factors can impact on the smoking among women and why they mostly smoke in entertainment places.

We used the questionary for the interviews

First time smoking causes

• The majority of respondents smoke for the first time because of the stress and wanted to get out of it. So they accepted the suggestions of their friends, who claimed that cigarettes are the best way for it.

• The others mentioned that they didn’t want to “differ” from the society as the majority of them were smokers, and they felt as if they were isolated from it.

• Others mentioned that they tried to contradict the society. So, one of the respondents mentioned.

“I smoke because of the bet that I have with my husband and I will quit smoking after we have our third child.”

• The others mentioned that they like the process of smoking.

How much they smoke?

• The majority answered, that generally they don’t smoke too much, that is to say they can smoke a pack of cigarettes which contains 24 cigarettes during three days.

• And the others, who started to smoke at an early age, were smoking too much: i. e., a pack in a day.

They like most in smoking….

• Basically, those, who started to smoke at an early age, mentioned, that it turned to a habit for them and they have a strong need for it.

• Other respondents indicated that they used to smoke because it helps to relax and get out of stress.

• A few of the respondents claimed that they just like the smell of it.

With smoking they associate…

• The majority associated it with drinking coffee.

• The other part of respondents indicated, that they can smoke even after eating.

• They associated it with relax, for example, they can smoke during watching TV or a film.

They smoke more frequently in….

• The majority didn’t mention a concrete place for smoking. They just said that they could smoke everywhere, surely, if they need it.

• Other parts of respondents mentioned, that more frequently they smoke in the places of entertainment which is connected with that occasion that they gather with their friends there and relax, and cigarette is the inseparable friend of entertainment.

Smoking has a connection with the place of it

• The majority of respondents mentioned that mostly it has no connection, because “when you have a need for smoking you have to satisfy it irrespective of the place”.

• But they indicated that it has connection so far that, for example, “when we go somewhere with friends/ e.g. a café/ and if we spend much time there we can smoke more than if when we are at home”.

The causes of smoking in entertainment places

• There are no signs prohibiting it, and it is allowed there.

• Others highlighted that they smoke because in their opinion cigarette “matches” with a coffee and alcohol. “We gather with friends to relax, to have fun, to have a rest, and for a smoker all this is impossible to imagine without a cigarette”.

The causes of smoking in entertainment places

• Few of the respondents mentioned that it is prestige for them to smoke. One of them said, “I like the image of smoking woman”.

• There were also people, who were “social smokers’’, i. e. they do not smoke when they are alone at home, but when they gather with their friends they unexceptionably smoke. There were people who were against smoking in social or entertainment places. One of them mentioned, “It’s unpleasant to watch”. The other one said that, “she has to smoke in entertainment places because it is her workplace and she can’t help smoking for a whole day”.

The results showed that the number of woman-smokers in

Armenia /despite being traditional society/ has increased. In

the result it was noticed, that…

women smoke only in entertainment places, because during the research we couldn’t see a woman-smoker in the street or in the parks, for example.

Besides the research was carried out during the work-hour/from 4 to 5/, and for the Armenian society it is admitted that the woman should be either at home or at the working place. Besides it is vital to note that entertainment life is not active at that time. But the research results proved the opposite picture: during these hours we hadn’t meet any entertainment place without several women smoking there.

That many entertainment places lack signs prohibiting smoking. During hard work of research it is possible to come across with several entertainment places with these prohibiting signs.

So the main aim of social workers and the specialists of public health is to help everyone

who has problems, to sopport them to overcome their problems
