ComposerThecomposerispartoftheagentandcomposestheusersuniformworkspaceenvironment.Itdoesthiswiththeinformationfromtheagentcache.Thiswayausercanhaveauniformworkspaceeveniftheagentisnotconnectedtothedatastore.Thecomposerprovidestheworkspacewithonlythefunctionalitytheuserneeds,likeapplication,settings,etc.

RelayServerRelayserverscacheinformationfromthedatastore.Agentscanconnecttotherelayserverandupdatetheircacheinsteadofconnectingtothedatastore.Thisreducesthedatastoreloadandnetworktraffic.Relayserverisalsoagreatwaytoimprovethescalability.Forexample,ifyouhaveadatastoreinParisand50agentsinNewYorkinsteadofeachagentconnectingtoParis.InstallarelayserverinNewYorkandthe50inNewYorkwillthenconnecttotherelayserverandonlytherelayserverwillconnecttothedatastoreinParis.ThissavesalotofdatatravellingthroughexpensiveWANlinks.

Relayserverisoptionalandrelayserverscanbestacked.Ifwetaketheexampleaboveandweadd50agentsinLondonand10agentsinParis,wecouldjustconnectthe10agentsinParisdirectlytothedatabaseandcreatearelayserverinLondonforthose50agents.IfwefindoutthattheWANlinkbetweenNewYorkandLondonisfasterandcheaperthanPariswecanconfiguretheRelayserverinNewYorktoconnecttotheRelayserverinLondoninsteadofthedatastoreinParis.

ConsoleWiththeconsoletheIT-administratorcancreate,manageandanalyzetheuserenvironments.Italsoisagreathelpdesktoolwhichallowsthehelpdesktoquicklyanalyzeuserenvironmentsandfindissuesorerrorsintheusersworkspace.Theycanalsoinitiatearemotevieworcontrolsessiontotheuserworkspace.

WebManagementConsoleThewebconsoleisanewlyintroducedfeatureinv10(Version10)ofRESONEWorkspace.Itallowsyoutoanalyzeuserworkspaceenvironmentswithmuchmoredetail.ItisalsopossibletoexportinformationfromthewebconsoleinCSVorXMLformat.ThewebconsolecanbelinkedtoRESReporting.SoonRESwillbemovingmorefeaturesfromtheWindowsconsoletothewebconsole.

ModulesRESONEWorkspaceislicensedwithmodules,theseare:

CoreThisisthebasemodulethatisbuilt-inwitheveryRESONEWorkspaceinstallation.Thismoduleisfreeandincludeseverythingtocreateauser’sworkspace.Itallowsyoutocreatestartmenu’s,fileshareconnections,printerconnectionsetc.

CompositionThecompositionmoduleisapaidmoduleandneedstobelicensed.ItallowsyoutouseZeroprofiletechnologyandcreateanactiononapplicationlevel.ItalsohassupportforWindows2016,MacOSandLinuxagents.Withthecompositionmodule,youcanusethenewWebManagementConsole.

SecurityThesecuritymoduleisapaidmoduleandneedstobelicensed.ThismodulegivesanIT-administratorthetoolstofightagainstransomwareandvirusespro-actively.Itcomeswithagreatapp-lockerandreadsonlyblanketing.Furthermore,itallowsyoutoapprovewhichperipheralsforstorageareusedandithaswebsitecontrol.

UserContextContextiswho,whenandwhereofausersworkspace.RESONEWorkspacecreatestheuniformworkspacejustintimeandtodothisitneedsthecontext.Forexample,auserworksonhislaptopintheofficeat14:00andwouldbeallowedtousebusinesscriticalapplications.ButthesameuserconnectedtoaCitrixsessionfromhomeat22:00wouldnotbeallowedtostarttheapplication.WithUsercontext,wecancreateAccessControlrulesandcreateajustintimeuniformworkspace.

CompositionThecompositionsectionintheRESONEWorkspaceConsoleletsyoucreatetheworkspaceenvironment.Hereyoucanaddallyourcompany’sIT-resources(applications,networkshares,printersetc).ThenwithAccessControlrulesyoucanmanagewho,whenandwheregetsaccesstothoseresources.CompositionsectionalsoallowsyoutomanagetheuserprofileswithZeroProfiletechnology.

ZeroProfileZeroprofiletechnologyisREShybridprofilesolution.UserslogonwithmandatoryprofilesandthenRESONEWorkspacewillcapturesettingsfromtheprofile.Itsavesthosetotheuserhomedirectory(oranotherdestination)with.upf(UserProfileFiles)and.upr(UserProfileRegistry)files.ItalsoallowstheIT-administratortopickwhichsettingswillandwillnotbesaved.ZeroProfiletechnologyisdoneattwolevels.Firstthegloballevel,thesearesettingsthatarerestoredwhenauserlogsontoasession.Thesesettingsaresavedattheendofthesession.Thesecondlevelistheapplicationlevel,thesesettingsarerestoredwhentheuserlaunchestheapplicationandtheyaresavedattheapplicationend.Bycapturingasmanysettingsaspossibleatapplicationlevelthelogonspeedwillincrease.Tomakesurethatloadingofanapplicationdoesn’ttaketoomuchtimeRESONEWorkspacestartscachingbydefaultthemostusedapplicationprofilesassoonastheloginiscompleted.

SecurityThesecuritysectionintheRESONEWorkspaceConsoleletsyouprotecttheenvironmentpro-activelyagainstVirusesandRansomware.Youcanalsocreaterulesthatallowuserstoinstallcertainpre-approvedsoftware.Italsoallowsyoutowhite-andblacklistWebsitesandstorageperipherals.

ReadOnlyBlanketingReadOnlyBlanketingpresentsthewholesystemdriveasareadonlydisk.Thiswayuserscan’tchangefilesonthesystemdrivethey’renotsupposedto.ThisisagreatprotectionagainstransomwarebecauseitwouldnotbeallowedtochangethefilesontheCdrive.RESONEWorkspace


allowsyoutoreadonlyblanketingwithawhite-orblacklistprincipal.Bydefault,everythingisreadonlyuntilyouplaceitonthewhitelist(AuthorizedFiles).TomakethetransfertoReadOnlyBlanketingeasier,RESONEWorkspacehasabuilt-inlearningmodeatwhichpointitonlylogswhichfilesarebeingchanged,allowingyoutocreateyourwhitelistbeforesettingreadonlyblanketingtoenabledmode.

ManagedApplicationsThisistheAppLockerfromRES.Itallowsyoutowhite-orblacklistapplicationsbasedonapplicationname,pathand/orfilehash.ThiswayaviruswillnotbeallowedtostartbecauseVirus.exeisnotonthewhitelist.EvenwhenavirusreplacedawhitelistprogramlikeWord.exe,withfilehashesconfigureditwillnotbeallowedtostart.ManagedApplicationshasalivelogwhichmakesitpossibletoviewwhichapplicationsarebeingblockedandithasalearningmodetocreateyourwhitelist.

CPUoptimizationWillmakesurethatnotoneuseralonecanusealltheCPUpower.WhichisveryimportantinshareddesktopenvironmentslikeMicrosoftRDSorCitrixXenApp.TheCPUlimitscanbesetbytheadministrator.

MemoryoptimizationReleasesthephysicalmemoryofapplicationsthatarenotactiveandnotinuseanymore.Youcanalsoconfigureamaximalamountofmemorytobeusedbyausersessionwhichcanbehandyinshareddesktopenvironments.

InstantLogOffInstantLogOffcanbeconfiguredtodisconnecttheusersessionassoonastheypresslogoff.Theycanshutdowntheirclientandgohomewhiletheirprofileisbeingsavedandtheirsessionisloggedoff.Thereisonesmallissuethatcanexistwhenworkingwithinstantlogoff.Whichisthattheprofileandsessionarestillbeingloggedoffwhileausertriestolaunchanewsession.Dependingonhowyourenvironmentisconfiguredthiswillresultinanerror.Agoodpracticeistologoffandwaitaminutebeforestartinganewsession.

UsagestrackingWithusagestrackingyoucanviewtheusagesofapplicationsandwebsiteperuserorcomputer.ThishasbeenreplacedwithRESReportinginv10,butcanstillbeusedifthereisnoRESReportingenvironmentconfigured.

VDXRESONEWorkspaceVDXallowsyoutostartlocallyinstalledapplicationsfromaremotedesktopsessionlikeRDS,CitrixorVMware.

ViewpointRESViewpointisanonlineAzure-hostedservicewhichallowsyoutogetmoreinformationaboutyourexistingdesktopinfrastructure.Thisinformationcanthenbeusedfordesktopandinfrastructureprojects.

DesktopSamplerTheDesktopSamplerisatooltocapturealltheapplications,networksharesandprintersauserhasaccesstoinanunmanageduserenvironmentandsavesthisinformationinDTS-files.TheseDTS-filescanbeusedwiththeRESONEWorkspace,Workspacedesignerandallowsyoutotransformunmanageduserenvironmentstomanageduserenvironments.

ProjectsModulescanbecombinedinprojects.Whitinaprojectyoucanalsosetconditionsonthemodules.Forexample,ifyouhaveaprojecttodeployanewRDSserverandyouaddamodule:installoffice2013withaconditiononthemoduleifparameter“Officeversion”=“2013”runthismoduleorelseskipthismodule.Thenyouaddanothermoduleinstalloffice2016withtheconditionifparameter“Officeversion”=“2016”runthismoduleorelseskipthismodule.NowyouhavecreatedoneprojectbutwithaparametervalueyoucanselecttoinstallOffice2013orOffice2016.Projectsalso

RunbooksWithinarunbookyougroupmultiplemodulesandprojects.Andjustlikeinprojectsyoucansetconditionsonthemodulesorprojects.Italsoallowsyoutolinkmultipleparametersbetweenmodulesandprojectstogether.Whatmakesarunbookuniqueistheabilitytosettheagentthatrunsthemoduleorproject.Arunbookcanconsistofmultipleprojectsormodulesthatrunonmultipleanddifferentagents.Forexample,ifwehaveaprojecttocreateanewUserwemightwanttorunthatonaDomaincontrolleragentbutaftertheuseriscreated,amodulemustruntoemailthecredentialstoHR.Butinthisinstancethedomaincontrollerisnotallowedtosendanemail.Youcanthenrunthatmoduleonanagentthatcanemail.Inthisexample,youuse2agentsinonerunbook.

ParameterWithinRESONEAutomationparametersareusedtomakegenerictaskspecific.Youcancreateyourownparametersandlinkthemtotasks,modules,projectsandrunbooks.Youcancreateatasktosettheinitialvalueoftheparameterorentertheparametervalueyourself.Parameterscanalsobeleftblank.

VariablesRESONEAutomationletsyoucreateglobalvariableswhichthencanbeusedintasks,modules,projectsandrunbooks.Agoodexampleofvariablesisadeploymentaccountcredentialsvariableyoucreatethisonceanduseitinmultiplemodules.Ifthepasswordchangesyouonlyneedtochangethisintheglobalvariable.
