Throughout the duration of this very successful program, Metro Transit has overseen the building of two new transit terminals with free Park & Ride lots and the implementation of a new limited-stop, premium fare service utilizing transit priority lanes and signals. The MetroLink service also offers more comfortable buses with air conditioning, upholstered seats and bike racks, as well as other updated passenger amenities. These were introduced in two busy transit corridors-Cole Harbour in August 2005 and Sackville in February 2006. Since their initial implementation, the two Park & Ride Lots at Cole Harbour & Sackville Terminals have already been expanded to hold more cars-Cole Harbour now has a capacity for 230 vehicles while the Sackville Terminal Park & Ride lot accommodates up to 315 vehicles. Using the initial phases of this program as a model, and through the Regional Planning process, it is anticipated that additional MetroLink services could be introduced in the next five years in other busy transit corridors such as Clayton Park and Spryfield. Metro Transit service has experienced unprecedented growth over the past few years and carried a record 17 million passengers in 2005/06. The ridership increase has been attributed to a number of factors including the rising price of gas and auto insurance, as well as growing traffic congestion issues, concerns about the environment, the introduction of MetroLink’s limited-stop service, and U-Pass to Saint Mary’s and Dalhousie Universities. The transit system accommodated 684,231 more passenger trips during the first six months of the 2006 fiscal year compared to 2005! This number, which doesn’t include ferry ridership, represents a 9.36 % increase in ridership. Over the same period nationally, there was a 3.42 % increase in the use of public transit, representing approximately 30 million passenger trips in Canada, according to statistics compiled by the Canadian Urban Transit Association. Fast Ferry HRM has also just recently completed the Halifax/ Bedford Fast Ferry Cultivation Study. This project evaluated the market, the financial feasibility and the operating criteria for a high-speed commuter ferry service between Mill Cove in Bedford and downtown Halifax. HRM Regional Council has endorsed the findings of the study and directed that the project should proceed and also give consideration to other potential fast ferry routes within Halifax Harbour. Rural Transit Study The Halifax Regional Municipality is considering the design and implementation of express transit services between the downtown core and communities in the Hwy 107, Hwy 103 and Hwy 102 corridors. The project will provide express services designed for the commuter market from local stops and park’n’ride lots in the highway corridors. Meet Iggy the Iguana and his real, live cold-blooded buddies from Nova Scotia and “from away”. Nova Scotia is home to nine of Canada’s 43 species of reptiles including the threatened and endangered Blandings Turtle, Northern Ribbon Snake and the visiting Atlantic Leatherback. Route #23 TimberleaIntroducing a new route to provide more weekday, peak hour service between downtown Halifax and Timberlea. The routing is similar to the Route 21 in Timberlea; however, it will bypass Bayers Lake Industrial Park via the St. Margaret’s Bay Road, Chebucto Road, Mumford Road, Windsor Street, Cunard Street, Robie Street, Bell Road, Summer Street, Spring Garden Road, Barrington Street and Upper Water Street. All trips will service Greenwood Heights in both directions. PM service will start at Upper Water Street following the reverse of the above routing. Effective February 18, 2007.

Metro Transit is kicking off 2007 with the introduction of a new visual identity. The new look includes a revised logo and design for all of the conventional fleet buses. This process began two years ago with the introduction of the premium MetroLink service and its own distinct look. The process continues now with the parent division, Metro Transit, with the addition of 25 new buses in the fleet. All of the new buses are low floor, accessible buses and feature additional passenger amenities such as air conditioning and bike racks.

The new visual identity will expand to include the majority of transit fleet vehicles in the next three years and be adapted to incorporate any new services, such as the potential fast ferry. Other transit passenger information materials will also be adapted to display the new design.

The new wave design that will be featured on all of the conventional fleet buses, Access-A-Buses and Harbour ferries is similar in style to the premium MetroLink identity. Essentially, it features the reverse pattern of the MetroLink design, using a more traditional, conventional fleet look of a white background with the wave pattern in the HRM colours of blue and gold.

Metro Transit’s new visual identity also includes a more modern logo, which will be featured on the buses, in addition to the HRM logo. Metro Transit riders and HRM residents should keep an eye out for the new buses and signage, which will begin to appear in service over the next month, and continuing throughout the summer months at all of the bus stops, shelters and terminals.

Weekdays

Route #10 WestphalWeekday trip extended, the 3:50 PM trip departing Dalhousie will continue to Westphal, instead of stopping at the Bridge Terminal.

Route #15 Purcells CoveRouting change; on weekdays only the Route 15 will depart the Village at Bayers Road via Desmond Avenue, Bayers Road, Joseph Howe Drive, Mumford Road, and then proceed on existing routing to Purcells Cove. Weekday trips arriving at Mumford Terminal will continue to the Village at Bayers Road via Mumford Road, Joseph Howe Drive, Scott Street, and Desmond Avenue. The route will be a designated Accessible Low Floor (ALF) route.

Route #21 TimberleaIncreased weekday service to 30-minute all day service; new Summer Street departure at 3:31 PM.

Route #60 Heritage Hills New weekday routing. In addition to the existing route, 60 Eastern Passage, the 60 Heritage Hills will provide 30-minute weekday peak hour service to Heritage Hills. The routing will be the same as the 60 Eastern Passage until the Cow Bay Road, then travel via the Hornes Road, Caldwell Road, Cow Bay Road, Samuel Daniel Road, Melrose Crescent, Heritage Hills Drive, Cow Bay Road, Pleasant Street, and then resume the routing of the 60 Eastern Passage to the Bridge Terminal. The new route will also service the Woodside Ferry Terminal in both directions on all trips.

Sundays

Route #54 MontebelloIncreased Sunday service, 1 additional trip; first trip departs the Alderney Terminal at 8:00 AM.

Route #55 Port WallaceIncreased Sunday service, all new schedule; 8 additional trips; first trip departs the Mic Mac Terminal at 6:25 AM; last trip departs the Bridge Terminal at 9:15 PM.

Route #62 WildwoodIncreased Sunday service, all new schedule; 7 additional trips; first trip departs the Bridge Terminal at 7:00 AM; last trip departs the Bridge Terminal at 10:00 PM.

Route #65 AstralIncreased Sunday service, all new schedule; 2 additional trips; first trip departs the Penhorn Terminal at 8:25 AM; last trip departs the Penhorn Terminal at 5:25 PM.

Route #66 PenhornIncreased Sunday service, all new schedule; 8 additional trips; first trip departs the Highfield Terminal at 7:02 AM; last trip departs the Highfield Terminal at 10:02 PM.

Route #72 Portland HillsNew Sunday service, providing 60-minute frequency; first trip departs Ilsley Avenue at 6:39 AM; last trip departs Ilsley Avenue at 5:39 PM.

New Routes for the New Year!

Route #56 Dartmouth Crossing* Introducing a new route, providing 40-minute weekday, Saturday and Sunday service between Penhorn Terminal, Mic Mac Terminal & the Dartmouth Crossing Development. Route #56 Dartmouth Crossing will travel from Penhorn Terminal, along the #111 Highway, to Mic Mac Terminal, up Mic Mac Blvd., turning right onto Woodland Ave., to the #118 Hwy, turning at the new interchange into Dartmouth Crossing, left onto Wright Ave., taking a right loop to Countryview Dr., traveling along Countryview Dr. to Gale Terrace; right on Finnian Row; right on Lamont Terrace; right onto Commodore Dr.; to Hwy #118; then follow the reverse outbound routing to Penhorn Terminal. This route is a designated Accessible Low Floor (ALF) route. Service begins January 15, 2007.

Route #88 Northgate*Introducing a new route, providing 60-minute weekday, Saturday and Sunday service between Sackville Terminal, Cobequid Terminal & the Northgate Development. This route is a designated Accessible Low Floor (ALF) route. Scheduled to begin service mid to late February 2007.

*These routes will be revised as the Dartmouth Crossing and Northgate Developments expand.
