Before listening:
Functions and examples:
We use reported speech to tell someone what another person said.
Jim says to you..."I don't feel well." "I can't drive." "My parents
have gone on holiday." "I'm going out now so you will have to wait
until I get back." You tell your friend what Jim said... Jim said
(that) he didn't feel well.He said (that) he couldn't drive. He said
(that) his parents had gone on holiday. He said (that) he was going
out now so I would have to wait until he got back.
Important points:
1. If we report something which is still true, it is not
necessary to change the verb. DIRECT SPEECH: "My car is bigger than
yours." REPORTED SPEECH: He said his car is / was bigger than
mine.
2. When we are reporting past tenses, and we see the events from
the same viewpoint as the original speaker, it is not necessary to
change the tense. DIRECT SPEECH: "The earthquake happened at half
past seven." REPORTED SPEECH: The radio said that the earthquake
happened at half past seven.
3. Modal verbs could, might, would, should, ought, had better
usually do not change in reported speech. DIRECT SPEECH: "I should
go to the dentist." REPORTED SPEECH: He said that he should go to
the dentist.
REPORTED QUESTIONS: In reporting questions, the same changes as
for direct statements apply. In addition:
Yes/no questions drop the question mark and take the reporting
verb ask + if: Are you going to the game? asked Bob Bob asked if I
was going to the game.
Wh- questions drop the question mark and take the reporting verb
ask + the question word: Where is the game? asked Bob. Bob asked
where the game was.
Note that the order of the subject and the verb changes:
Bob asked where the game was.

Original version by Pink Floyd : http://youtu.be/4BpO-FiY2j4
Pink Floyds The Wall is one of the most intriguing and
imaginative albums in the history of rock music. The Wall was
written almost entirely by Roger Waters (principal songwriter and
conceptual leader of Pink Floyd band) and is largely based on his
life story. Since the studio album's release in 1979, the tour of
1980-81, and the subsequent movie of 1982,the Wallhas become
synonymous with, if not the very definition of, the term "concept
album." Aurally explosive on record, astoundingly complex on stage,
and visually explosive on the screen, the Walltraces the life of the
fictional protagonist, Pink Floyd, from his boyhood days in
post-World-War-II England to his self-imposed isolation as a
world-renowned rock star, leading to a climax that is as cathartic
as it is destructive. The Wall by Pink Floyd that centres on a
character called Pink who encounters obstacles throughout his life,
beginning with the loss of his father during World War II,
continuing with abuse from his schoolteachers, an overprotective
mother, and the desertion of his wife, drugs all of which
contribute to Pink's self-imposed isolation from society,
represented by the metaphorical wall of the album title (hence the
famous line: All in all you're just another brick in the wall)
As with the other songs on The Wall, Mother tells a portion of
the story of Pink, the album's protagonist. The song narrates a
conversation between Pink and his mother, and is undoubtedly tragic
and heartbreaking in the apparent calmness and normality with which
the mother tells her son how she is going to keep him away from
danger. Pink opens up to his mother, looking for help and advice.
He tells her about all his doubts and fears regarding his future,
work, war, his relationship with other people but especially with
women etc. but all he gets in return from his mother is of course
Mamma's going to help build a wall.
