    PART BProposed research Work

    9. i) Project Title : Quest for Identity in the selected Novels of Shashi Deshpande andGauri Deshpande: A Comparative stufy

    ii) Introduction :

    Origin of research problem:

In the age of globalization various branches of literatures in English have beenemerged. E.g. the Canadian Literature, The Indian literature in English, The African literature. Besides the same is scenario in other regional languages.Hence, Indian litreture in regional languages should be introduced to the worldby comparing with English literature. The branch of comparative literature has e

merged and is being studied in the several universities at the post graduate level. The project deals with in general and selected novels of Shashi Deshpande inEnglish and Gauri Deshpande in Marathi in particular.

    Interdisciplinary Relevance:

The project has got an interdisciplinary relevance in the following sense:It deals with the womans efforts and struggle to free herself from the shackles of different male dominated societies speaking different languages. The study con

centrate on the theme of womans quest for identity. It is related with the socio-culture and political ethos of the urban and rural culture of India. The researcher therefore intends to study comparatively the novels of Shashi Deshpande in English and Gauri Deshpande in Marathi.

Review of research and Development I the Subject: International Subject:

There are few international scholars who have advocated and defined comparativeliterature as the study of diverse litretures in their relation with one another; e.g. R. A. Sayce, S. S. Prawer

    National status:

It appears that no Indian scholar have studied the novels of Shashi DEshpande and Gauri Deshpande in comparative. So the work probably will be the firstof kind in the Indian context.

    Significance of Study:

The study of the womans quest for identity in the novel of Shashi Deshpande and Gauri Deshpande will be an important step in the comprehension of womans role and her struggle for equality in the Indian society. Further, it will help the students either studying for the post graduate courses or doing research in I
