Steps to writing thoughtful reportcard comments
Begin with an adjective brainstorm create a list of your students names. Beside each name , jotdown one or two adjectives that describe the student as a learner, challenging yourself to avoidrepetition.
Begin this process at least two weeks before writing report cards so that you have ample time to find thejust right descriptors for each student.
Take supportive notese.g. your anecdotal record
Use sentence stems use especially for students who are difficult to describe , for example..
Ali has shown improvement in ...
This term Sara challenged herself by
Focus on the positive it is important to emphasize what students do well so that your parents andstudents can build from those strengths. Often, negative adjectives can be reworked to suggeststrengths. For example, restless and easily distracted students can be categorized as very energetic.Regardless of how frustrating a student is , a comment space is not the appropriate place for adisciplinary referral.
Write the easy comments firstyou will develop comment- writing skills more quickly if you start with thestudents who are easy to describe.
Ask colleagues for helponce youve brainstormed some adjectives and incidents, you may want toelicit the support of colleagues in describing challenging students. For example, Music, physical
education and art teachers might have been students for years and could have the just right insights youneed for that student youre struggling to describe.
use jargon free language -parents/guardians need to be able to read and understand whatwere saying about their child we need to keep in mind our audience when composing,as not all parents/guardians are highly literate.
