Our body can perform some actions suchas rotating, bending, stretching, jumping, andturning. With all these physical actions, we cancreate a number of body movements.

Every culture emphasizes certain featuresin its dance styles. For example, lilin dance fromWest Sumatra, has some candles carried by thedancer, or topeng dance from Betawi, uses a maskto perform its dance. And there are many more.

The developing of wood in Indonesia from earliesttimes, provided the people with the raw materials toproduce functional and artistic artefact. Many motifsfound in prehistoric artefact used bronze in woodcarving.Indian influences from around the first century AD led tothe developing of a new designs.

Introduction of Islam in the twenty one centurymade some of the designs were lost. The existing motifsthat remain today are influenced most with religious style.

Climatic condition problem have eliminated someremain of wooden artefacts from a very early date, it’s notleaving many evidence, but it seemed the woodcarvingwas an early form of artistic expression.
