1.1 HISTORY OF COMPANY:

The company was established in the year 1976 by Mr. Vijay sankeshwar at gadag it was started

with small business with single truck, after year are passed VRL started growing and he

expended his business in Bangalore, Belgaum, and Hubli, after this expansion VRL slowly

widen into a nationally famed logistics, and transportation company which presently have

highest fleet owners in India, over 4779 vehicles includes of 381 passenger buses and

trucks,(includes light commercial vehicles).

The company was initially started with transportation of goods and service. along with that it

started a business of courier service in the year 1996 and it started a travels(buses) called

vijayananda travels was operating in Karnataka state only, over period of time goes VRL

travels business was also operarated through Karnataka, to Maharashtra and tamilnadu.



The company has also a fast-express cargo service, the company recently started Air charted

business in 2008 and recently they have purchased premier aircraft for the company’s special

work purpose, commercial use, and VIP transportation and Advertisement purpose.

The company owns a social media service called Vijaya vani newspaper and Digvijaya as news

deliver channel, the media sector in a shorter period Vijaya vani newspaper has become No1

newspaper in Karnataka. Right now, Mr. Vijay sakeshwar has been joined by his son Mr.

Anand sakeshwar for bringing up some improved strategies in business and company

development.

The primary data means that is a raw data, it is collected from a source. It is directly collected

from first-hand experience data method. In this study the primary method of data collection

was through direct meeting with employees of the company and also visiting company outlet

hubs and getting information about the research statement. The employees of the company

responded to the questions about the topic, the personal observation is also done for collecting

fresh data all these data are considered as the primary source data.

Secondary data means, data which is collected by someone who is other than the user. The

common methods of collecting the secondary data is through census, information collected by

government departments, organizational records and data that was originally collected for other

research purposes. Some methods of secondary data collection may be qualitative and

quantitative, some examples for secondary data collection are, newspapers, dairies, interviews,

transcripts etc.

In this study the secondary data is also used. The secondary data used were, websites, company

websites, books, journals, etc.

As the study is conducted in Main office in Bangalore, study lacks the groundwork which

is crucial to get practical experience of the issues. In other words, the study is more

dependent on secondary data than primary data.

Political and legal scenarios in the north greatly differ from that of in the south. The study

has little focus on this factor.

Traffic related delay are the most pain full point in logistic industry, due to high population and

large number of vehicles queuing in traffic, In metropolitan cites the traffic is high and users

of road way are large in number specially in holiday season the traffic is heavy ,To drive

carefully and to come out from traffic the truck drivers are struggling and delay in delivery

starts from here only ,it also effect on increasing cost of industry, VRL truck drivers facing

this issues heavily in Bangalore city only specially in silk board junction ,and Nelmangala toll

gate, where truck drivers don’t have other option than crossing those signals where they

connect Bangalore- Chennai highway and Bangalore Mumbai highway,

To overcome this company must have efficient route planning where congestion will

be less,

Operation problems:

The VRL logistics have certain operation problems like business process improvement,

maintenance of vehicles, government regulations, retention of drivers, fuel cost, environmental

issues, all these factors are now increasing their operation cost and now company is worried

about decreasing of administrative and operational cost. And also, these factors effect on

reaching out customer expectations,



Packaging:

packaging is most important function in logistics it is done while transporting goods, from one

place to another place, the quality of packing of goods to avoid damages is more essential,

when a policy of packaging goes wrong the goods get damaged, and for bundle of packaging

of goods it takes more time, that affect on industry cost and issue of delay in service takes

place.

To overcome this factor

Taking care on customers goods is most important factor must choose secured envelope

boxes for every product, and following a right policy in packaging, and also speed up

process of packing and transporting packed goods with guarantee that goods should not get

damaged,

Shifting:

When the logistics company does not have direct transit system between two places, it chooses

an intermediary place where goods are shifted from one vehicle to another. In such cases when

either of the vehicle is delayed or if the necessary manpower is not available, shifting of goods

or parcels from one vehicle to another gets delayed which eventually results in the delay of

delivery.

Poor road network:

Distribution is directly impact on customers' satisfaction with the logistics service. In the

logistics distribution, how to plan rational delivery routes, to enhance the service quality, to

reduce logistics costs and to increase economic efficiency, becomes a solved problem. The

rural road network and transportation is not much developed in India.

The VRL Logistics Company must concentrate timely delivery to attract the customers.

The company must be improve in their tracking sector of vehicle and also in delivering

information to clients about exact time of delivery of goods.

The VRL logistics given time to delivery and offers to customers. Then only customers are

not preferring to other logistics company. The customers are sustaining as loyal customer

of VRL logistics.

The management is suggested to concentrate on rural area service.

The company must also improve in quality of packaging of products to avoid damages and

to control of industry additional cost.



Learnings:

The study gave me an opportunity to be a part of the VRL for a period one month and has

enabled me to learn the below listed aspects:

The work experience in VRL for a month is eye-opener the working culture of VRL is very

conductive for the study and the guidance and co-operation from the staff of VRL has helped

me greatly to complete this project report.

Dealing with different types of dealers has given me the practical knowledge and

understood about service sectors how it works

Understood about the problems faced by dealers and it was challenging to do interview

dealers and get information within the short period of time.

It was very difficult to understand different type of customers when delay in service takes

place.
