Facilities Planning & Construction is again pleased to present this summer’s construction report that details capital construction projects that will begin late this spring and throughout the summer. Most will be completed by late fall while the Doty Building Renovation project will continue on for a number of years. This summer’s project load impacts the north side residence halls more than other areas of campus but all the work in the residence halls is almost certain to be complete by the time students arrive for the fall semester. Most of this residence hall work completes our efforts to increase residence hall fire safety as all of our residences will now have a fully integrated fire and smoke detection system and building wide fire suppression sprinkler systems. Construction work at the North Village will also include site work along University Drive which creates a new vehicular access for Ontario and Seneca Halls. Further descriptions of these and other projects follow in this report. To better see the array of construction projects, their locations and, in some cases, renderings, photos and/or plans please visit: http://go.geneseo.edu/planning. As we look forward, know that architectural design continues for the Bailey Hall Renovation, the Letchworth Dining Hall Renovation and the College Stadium. Please note that due to the status of the State budget some projects may slip from the scheduling discussed in this report due to the fact that contractor payments may be withheld at the direction of the Governor. Fortunately, this would affect only projects beginning “M06” or “06” project number designation. As always, questions regarding the following projects can be addressed to Facilities Planning & Construction at 5511.

Projects for the Spring/Summer/Fall of 2010 SUNY Projects starting or continuing – spring, summer and fall 2010 06203 Window Restoration & Replacement at Welles Hall

A minor amount of work remains to be completed for this project. Namely, the doors are to be replaced with custom replicas of the original doors.

06318 Replace Campus Main Electrical Switchgear – Clark Service Building

The work of this project will be limited to the Clark Service Building and involves the replacement of our main, and very large, circuit breakers that protect our entire Campus electrical system. As the Campus electrical service is delivered in a “loop” for each circuit there will be no planned electric service disruption. The loop serving the ISC has limited capacity and therefore building air conditioning in the ISC will need to be turned off during the project which will occur after Commencement through late June. Adjustments to the ISC air handling systems will introduce night air during this time to help naturally cool the building.

06323 ADA/Elevator Upgrades – Various Buildings This project will replace the elevators in Milne Library, Welles, Fraser and

Brodie Halls. The Alice Austin Theater will have the stage orchestra lift replaced with modern equipment and the stage will now be fully accessible as a new wheelchair lift will also be installed. The stage in Wadsworth Auditorium will also have a new wheelchair lift installed. The work in Fraser and Welles has already begun and those elevators are expected to be back in service sometime in June. The remaining elevator replacements will occur during the summer and building occupants will be notified with more accurate work durations.

06337 Doty Building Renovation A much anticipated and exciting campus project is scheduled to begin

construction sometime in early fall. Exact scheduling is dependent on bidding and procurement requirements. The project will transform the building into the 21st century home of Admissions, International Student Services, College Advancement, the Department of Communicative Disorders and Sciences, the Speech and Hearing Clinic as well as the Small Business Development and Micro Outreach Centers. The old gymnasium will be converted into a start of the art recital hall with a seating capacity of 250. The lower level will be renovated for the continued use of the facility by OMRDD. Updates to this schedule will be forthcoming.

Local Projects starting spring and summer 2010: 067A3 Relocate Planetarium to Newton Hall

The College Planetarium was formerly located in Bailey Hall at a lower level that was not accessible to wheelchairs. It was also not feasible to reconstruct it as part of the Bailey Hall renovation project. It will be relocated to the lower level of Newton Hall and will be wheelchair accessible when completed later in the summer. This new location is preferred as it can be directly accessed from the ISC.

D069HS North Village Entry Circle

This exciting project implements the final phase of the North Village Master Plan. It provides a drop-off and bus loop in front of Seneca and Ontario Halls providing more safety and convenience in accessing these residence halls by vehicle. It will also complete the renovation of the Seneca, Ontario, Genesee courtyard and provide new entry canopies throughout to bring more consistency to the entries at the North Village. Construction is weather dependant and will likely extend into the fall.

D069HY Upgrade Fire Alarm System – Steuben Residence Hall

This work will make the smoke detectors in student bedrooms fully integrated with the building fire alarm system. Currently, a bedroom smoke detector sounds only in that bedroom if activated. This work is anticipated to be complete by the time students return to campus for the fall semester.

D069HQ Upgrade Stairways – Allegany Residence Hall D069IB Upgrade Stairways – Wyoming Residence Hall These two projects will provide major upgrades to the public stair towers in

these halls. The old, rickety handrails will be replaced with railing systems similar to those in other North Village halls. New flooring and a new paint scheme are also part of this work.

D069IA Sprinkler Installation – Steuben Residence Hall

This project provides the installation of a building-wide sprinkler system in Steuben and is also scheduled for completion prior to the arrival of students beginning the fall semester.

G06070 Starbucks Coffee – College Union

The Campus Grind in the College Union will be closed in late summer to allow its transformation into a Starbucks. In addition to providing Starbucks refreshments the entire seating area will be upgraded with new décor and furniture.

M06300 Reconstruct Moench Track

The triple jump runways will be repaired under the project warranty and should be completed in late May.

M06333 OMRDD Surge Space – Holcomb Building

In preparation for the upcoming renovation of the Doty Building it is necessary to renovate a portion of the Holcomb Building in order to temporarily house some programs of OMRDD while the Doty renovations are accomplished. The work is minor and should be completed by the beginning of September.

M06346 Abate Asbestos Flooring– Fraser Hall, Room 2 This small project will upgrade Fraser room 2 for the relocation of Union

offices out of the Holcomb Building.
