This year, following the trend of 2008, has been
markedbytheeconomiccrisis,afactorthathasbeen
moreacute in someWestEuropeaneconomies.This
economicenvironmenthasbecomenoticeable inthe
capacity of the companies to invest in innovation
projects, in the availability of competitive funds in
order to promote innovation and research activities
andfinally, in the investment capacity of the public
administration. Inspiteofthiscontext, i2CATFoun-
dationhasexperiencedaverypositivedevelopment
throughout 2010, and has increased its activity re-
garding thepreviousyearbymore than10%,witha
significant raise of the carried out projects and the
collaborationswithcompanies.
Duringthisperiodoftime,i2CAThasdecisivelyboosted
the development of international projects and, espe-

GENERALDESCRIPTIONANDGOALS
The GEYSERS project, funded under the 7th FrameworkProgramme of the European Union, aims to qualify theoptical infrastructureprovidersandnetworkoperatorsinordertoenhancetheirtraditionalsetofbusinessmodels. The technological elements which will help to meet theobjectives are the latest advances in resource partition-ing,logicalinfrastructurecompositionandnetworkcontrolplan architectures. This project will further improve theposition of the optical infrastructure provider, as it pro-videsamechanismfortheintegrationandprovisioningofnetworkandITresources.ThisfutureopticalnetworkwillsupportITservicesandFutureInternetarchitectures,thusenablingandfostering theemergenceofnewdistributedapplicationsgroupswhichwillbringaboutinnovativecom-mercialopportunities.
GEYSERSdefinesandappliesanewnetworkarchitectureofcommutationcircuits(OpticalNetwork+any-IT)tothenetworkoperatorswith theobjectiveofofferingend-to-end services. GEYSERS proposes a revolutionary visionunder an evolutionary approach, which still focuses onthenetworkwithabottom-upapproximation. Thisvisionis based on the separation of the infrastructure in orderto create different layers of virtual infrastructures. Thislayercompositionenablestoovercomethecurrentlimita-tionsregardingnetworksanddomainsegmentation.Eachone of these virtual infrastructureswill be controlled byanimprovedcontrolplan,whichwillbeabletodynamicallyprovidenetworkservicesintegratedwithon-demandITre-sources.
INNOVATIONANDRESEARCHELEMENTS
