a little wider and understand our Lord a little deeper,

so that when Good Friday and eventually Easter

comes, it is not just another day at church but an

opportunity to receive the overflowing of graces God

has to offer. Unlike the childlike joy associated with

the season of Advent, Lent is an intensely penitential

time as we examine our brokenness and return to

the God we have. Lent is an opportunity to

contemplate what our Lord really did for us on the

Cross - and it wasn't pretty. But ultimately, the

purpose of Lent does not stop at sadness and

despair - it points us to the hope of the Resurrection

and the day when every tear will be dried.

Although the nature of suffering is not one

that offers itself to easy explanations or pat answers,

the answers we seek seem to make the most sense

in light of the Cross. There is nothing in the world -

no religion, philosophy, or material comfort - that

offers such a powerful answer to life's toughest

questions as the two slabs of wood on which our

Savior died. Although many are drawn to

Christianity in search of joy, it is the Cross that keeps

them coming back day after day, year after year. It is

this time of year, known as Lent, that we are

reminded of what Jesus did for us.

When we look into the eyes of our suffering

God, suddenly the complexity of our Lord, the love

of our Lord, the humanity of our Lord shows

through. God is not just some nebulous energy

source or a grandfather sitting in the clouds – our

God is so much more. The Cross is where our faith

stands when all other faiths fail. Christ's sacrifice and

his subsequent resurrection are the true "cruxes" of

the Christian faith. Without one there would be no

salvation, without the other, no hope. This is why

Good Friday and the following Easter Sunday are the

most important dates on the Christian calendar -

even more so than Christmas.

Lent is counted as the 40 days prior to Easter,

not counting Sundays which are all like little Easters

every week. Practices of Lent are to be focusing and

intentional. Some practice by giving up something

meaningful to them, a daily reminder that Jesus gave

up His life for us. More recently, others have begun

“taking up” something for Lent, a reminder that

Christ took up the cross for us. Whether you give up

or take up, the results are the same, intentionally

focusing on our faith journey and deepening our

walk with God. Together this year, we will take up

the work of memorizing seven promises of Scripture.

By Easter 2020, we will know “By Heart” this “Good

News” which can hold us tight during our

celebrations and our sorrows. God’s Peace,

President’s Report

March is always an exciting month for me. We “spring forward” to Daylight Saving Time and the sun grows stronger each day. We have “March Madness” college basketball and State Championship games. For those like me who have some Gaelic background, St. Patrick’s Day is always a fun time as well to hear the bag pipes and watch our “World’s Shortest Parade” in downtown Bemidji. We will likely have one big, wet snowfall but oh well, that’s Spring in Bemidji! We are fast approaching the time when our Congregational Council and Team Members will be turning over and new members will be needed. When I look at our Teams that could benefit greatly from more volunteers joining them, two stand out. The first is the Christian Growth Team. This Team has had only one volunteer all year!! Two of our staff, Tyler Bublitz and Heidi Doyle, are on this Team. Bob Zarrett is the volunteer and he is off of this Team this May! Please strongly consider volunteering to join this Team and assist Tyler and Heidi in carrying out programming and activities involving our youth, families and adults. The second is the Care Team. This Team currently has 4 Team members but one is on hiatus and another will be off of the Team in May, reducing their number to just 2. If you recall, this Team just sponsored the Sunday brunch in February that was held in between the services to get us to mingle more and get to know one another better. Our At Large Members for the Congregational Council will need 3 more volunteers. This group meets the second Tuesday of the month at 6:00 p.m. with the Council Officer, Pastors, and other at large members. They also meet the fourth Tuesday of the month at 5:30 and rotate between Teams to get a better understanding of what each Team’s mission is and what they are doing as part of the larger church and mission of the church. If you are interested in joining any of the Teams, please let a Council Member know. Please prayerfully consider joining a Team. We can all get a lot more accomplished working together than we can alone. Blessings,

The Second Great Soup Cook-Off for MISSION! Are you ready for the sequel to last year’s Great Soup Cook-Off

for Mission? Once again, this year we are raising money for the

Bemidji Community Food Shelf with The Great Soup Cook-Off

for Mission on Sunday, March 29 from 11:00 AM-1:00 PM.

Everyone is invited to bring a crockpot of their secret family

recipe soup, chili or stew. It will be like a smorgasbord of taste

sensations. Each attendant will receive a bowl and a spoon. Taste as many “soups” as you can, then

vote for your favorite “soup” with a donation to the basket representing that “soup.” The prize will be

the satisfaction that your “soup” raised the most money for mission. The designated mission for the

event will be our benevolence partner, The Bemidji Community Food Shelf. Our goal to reach is

$2,000! With March being MN Food Share month, we have an opportunity to receive a partial match

for our donation, so the $2,000 becomes more!!! P.S. You are invited to also bring along a loaf of

your favorite bread to share, although there will not be a competition, bread always goes well with a

SOUPER meal.


Council Connection

The Church Council met on Tuesday, Feb. 11, and following are highlights from that meeting.

The partnership between Lutheran Campus

Ministry and First Lutheran is going ahead. A

deacon was interviewed and a job

description has been approved by the Council.

Financial Audit may need to wait until after tax

season.

Paperwork on 911 Dewey is complete, waiting to

receive the keys. As donations have slowed, we

will be reminding the congregation about the

funds still needed for this project.

The name of the Young Adult LCM Minister

Candidate is being sent forward to the synod.

Nominating Committee is comprised of those

Council members finishing their terms.

Annual Meeting date was set—April 19, 2020 at

9:40 AM

Treasurer’s Report

Luke 6:38

v38 “Give, and it will be given to you. A good measure, pressed down, shaken

together and running over, will be poured into your lap. For with the measure you use,

it will be measured to you.”

The above verse is an excerpt from Jesus’ sermon on the Plain to his apostles and the crowd of thousands gathered there. In this Chapter of Luke, Jesus is preaching to his followers and would-be followers on how to live. Jesus encouraged the freedom to give without fearing that we will become the loser in our giving. He wanted to set us free from the fear of giving too much. Simply said: We can’t out-give God. Isn’t that a Blessing? He will return more to us, in one way or another, more than we give to Him. And this includes not only material things but also love, blessings and forgiveness. We are never the loser when we give those things after the pattern of God’s generosity. We started off January with a bit of a slow start. You’ll see in the financials below that we are running close to 3% off budget for Revenues and at a loss for the month with expenses more than revenue. As the Bible verse above reminds us: “God will return to us more than we can give to Him.” Together we can trust God for ALL that we need – running over poured into our lap!

Grief Support in Bemidji

Sanford Health offers an ongoing Grief Support Group for people who have experienced

the death of a spouse or partner. This is a facilitated, but unstructured group and

requires no registration or fee.

Finishing the Dewey House Remaining amount as of Feb 26 Now that the papers are official and First Lutheran Church is the owner of 911 Dewey, we need

to pay for it, Currently we are short $36,027.08 from our goal of $125,000 which was set at the

congregational meeting in September 2019 when the congregation authorized the Council to

move forward with the purchase. This amount included money to tear down the building.

Please assist in any way, so this project is not carrying a negative balance.

It’s important to remember that there aren’t really “good” and “bad” guys in the world- we all have the capacity for both. God is working in all of us all the time and it does not mute or vacate us when we make poor choices. The moment of conviction or accountability is God’s invitation for us to listen to and return to the guidance of the Spirit.

When is it difficult to listen to God’s voice?

Why does Jesus tell us to love our enemies and pray for people who really annoy or hurt us?

What might happen if you took the time to pray for or to be kind to people in your life who hurt you?

Dear God, it can be hard to love our enemies. Help us remember that they, too, are people you love. Help us show love to them. Amen

“Lenten Peace Meal” All are welcome to join at the Lutheran Campus Ministry Table!

The Lutheran Campus Ministry House at BSU will host a "Lenten Peace Meal" Thursdays at 6:00 pm beginning March 5th and continuing through Holy Week. Mission Statement

“Bemidji Community Food Shelf is a faith-based, caring place that listens to those who are experiencing food insecurity. We work with our partners to be inclusive and to provide fresh, nourishing foods for those living in Beltrami County and the Bemidji School District.”

Organization history

“Bemidji Food Shelf (BCFS) is a nonprofit (IRS Reg. 501c3) organization founded during the summer of 1982. Realizing that the need for food was greater than any one church could handle, a group of twelve churches joined hands. The food shelf now has 17 member churches and serves approximately 3,000 families at a large facility in the Industrial Park, distributing over 700,000 pounds of food per year. We purchase just over half our food, and partner with area stores for donations for the remainder. We have a full time director and four part-time staff, and over 700 volunteers from the community.”

Did you know? The Food Shelf is “a distribution site for the Nutrition Assistance Program for Seniors (NAPS). People 60 and over who meet income eligibility requirements can receive a commodity box and cheese once per month. For an application form, contact the Food Shelf at 218-444-6580 or [email protected] , or download a printable form from NAPS form 001 PDF .”

The Food Shelf is grateful for both donations of goods and monetary donations, however please keep in mind that, because of special programs and wholesale purchasing opportunities, a dollar

donated goes much further than yours does at the grocery store. Your support is always needed! The Food Shelf Committee

Adult Education

God is not limited to our world within the walls of the church building! Whether we listen for God in our lie outside the church walls is another question. Come and listen for God in the words of short story authors. This adult educational opportunity will be a literature study dedicated to listening for God in the common word. Join us in the Amber Room, Wednesdays at 6:45 PM, through March 18. The cost for the book is $14.00 and are available in the church office. For more information, please contact Pastor Corey.

Clean Up Day Clean Up Day at First Lutheran will be on Saturday, March 21st, from 9:00 a.m. until mid afternoon. Come for the day or for an hour or two. All work will be inside. We will do cleaning, painting and minor repairs. Snacks, lunch, supplies and good fellowship will be provided.
