My Community My Commitment
Project proposal
Environmental community service is always considered as a necessity in every
community; the importance is described not only via helping communities but also
through its good performance worldwide and ecologically. Our environment has
been degrading which mostly humans are responsible. Although, many measures
have been applied to heal and cease further damage, permanent negative impacts
have occurred and subsequent environmental breakdown will take place. The
swiftest method to make a positive alteration is by initiating a global awareness;
primarily and simplest is by starting with gathering communities concerning their
own problems.
My community my commitment is a scheme that targets to inculcate and show the
youngsters with a strong conviction of communal responsibility, commitment and
aids. The project’s mission is to cultivate the young generation into morally and
ethically responsible leaders who will change their perspective about making use
of creative and ecological attitudes not having the sole aim of brightening our
world, but also extend it further, formally the architects of the future.
By requesting students to list and elaborate community based problem in their
home communities and generating innovative ecological approaches they will be
familiarized to face community life as architecture. My community my
commitment also require one to get involved with the trend and enhance teamwork
expertise important in initializing good professional practice; involvement
acknowledges a profound comprehension and the duty of being a responsible
person to the community and also get use to creative solution of true defies.

+1.1 OBJECTIVES OF THE PROJECT
Increase awareness of current issues locally.
To induce creativity in attempting to explore the current environmental
circumstance
To allow students to explore the opportunity to work with the community and
for the community
To create awareness of the importance if creating and environmentally
sustainable design products/design/services
To be able to understand and explain the principle of sustainability from
environmental and social perspective.
1.1 OBJECTIVES OF THE PROJECT
Agathians Shelter is a legally registered home which is located in Petaling
Jaya and operates since 2003, it offers basic shelter and emergency lodging
to 40 poor and deprived boys who were homeless and abandoned due to
social issues. Furthermore, it is not financially supported by the government,
but rely on donation and help from the community only. The monthly
expenses is about RM 20000. When there is shortage of finance, the
committee covers the expenses equitably. Moreover, activity such as
recycling is a mean of income for the shelter. Donation in the form of
clothing, and equipment are received.
Agathian’s primary aim is to save the children from the streets and help
them to take the right path. Furthermore they strive to fulfill their duties in
providing all essential needs to the children such as shelter, food, education,
care, attention and love etc.

+ 1.3- REASONS WHY WE CHOSED AGATHIAN SHELTER.
Agathians shelter is a welfare home, which covers about 40 boys from 3 till 20 years old.
The reason why we chose Agathians shelter is because these children have no parents or
any relatives, they are the most susceptible of growing up in the world of crime, or
forming part of child slavery. They are the most vulnerable, because of their tender age,
these children will decide exclusively out of necessity. Like anybody, they are going to
do the maximum to survive. This is a choice that a child must not have to do at such
tender age.
Every person ever conceived, was born with specific needs. Those needs include, critical
needs such as food and shelter, security, the knowledge that critical needs will continue
to be met, bonding, mentoring and nurturing which lead to a sense of belonging as well
as self actualization, or self worth. The belief that one is of value to themselves and
others. Children will first seek their critical needs. And the supply of those critical needs
will instill a learned behavior.
We pay attention and look after orphan children because, they will form part of the
future, they are susceptible, and mostly, because they are children. We also believe that
these children have the right to be happy and get what they want and need, and the only
way is US who have to do the first step.

+2.1 IDENTIFIED ISSUES
A. Uncomfortable environment
An uncomfortable situation arises for the boys, which relates to the playground whereby
there is no protection against the scorching sun. The porch and bedrooms are situated
beside the playground, hence they get warmed up.

Problems such as lack of storage of, books and important documents were commonly
noticed in the office. Furthermore the talented children have several trophies and medals
and keep receiving. However these trophies are hidden in the computer room, as they
don’t have enough space to display the trophies and medals

+ 2.2. POPOSED SOLUTIONS
The proposed solutions are long lasting ones, hence ensuring that the daily life at
Agathians Shelter becomes cosier.
A. Roofing (Issue 1)
At first, we would like to propose the use of metal wire netting to build a green roofing
for the playground as it affects a lot more than just the playground. For example, the
green roof will provide a more comfortable and safe environment for the children to play
outside, as well as reduce the amount of heat going in to the building. We believe that we
did a favor for the environment by planting plants as they are also a source of oxygen for
our planet.
We came up with 3 ideas:
IDEAS FOR THE CHOISE OF PLANT:

Shelter for children
The most important motive behind designing the rooftop garden in the playground was to
facilitate children with a shelter. We believe that placing plants on top, would create a
shelter for the children and protect them from the glazing hot sun. If the children were to
play in this environment they could they could easily suffer from tiredness, and possibly
dehydration. Therefore by designing a rooftop garden, we aim to create a more suitable
and temperature for the children to play.
Increase the exquisiteness of the place.
By designing the rooftop garden we trust that it would increase the beauty of the shelter.
Since the plant we are planting is Butterfly pea (Clitoria ternatea) the stunning blue color
of the flower would certainly increase the beauty of the playground and the whole shelter
home too.
Effects of Butterfly pea
Apart from the beautiful looks of the plant, it is important to note the number of uses this
plant has. Some of the uses of the plants include, extracting the color glutinous rice for
‘kuih ketan’ . It is also used to color white rice of ‘Nasi Kerabu’, use as prayer material
for Indians etc. Therefore by providing this plant, we hope that everyone at Agathians
would fully utilize the uses of this plant.
+The right Solution is to use Butterfly pea 15

STEPS TO FOLLOW:
1-Rubber-coated garden wire is cut by using wire
cutter into 11 shorter wires, 10 metre each.
2-Each wire is arranged at 0.5 metre interval.
3-The remaining wire is used to create the mesh at
0.5 metre interval (refer diagram 2 above).

+B: Tie the end of each wire to the wall (using clove hitch knot)
1-The free end of wire is wrapped around a post (refer diagram 1 above).
2-Crossover itself and wrapped around the post again.
3-The working end is slipped under last wrap. Then, it is tightly pulled.
The use of wire mesh
Unlike the wires which are currently installed on the playground, we decided to use a
wire mesh which is 2" x 2" grid wire basket system which would provide more stability
and strength as the plants grow. If the wire mesh is not strong or stable enough, the
growing of plant could result in some parts of the plant falling off to the ground. This
might cause difficulties for children and the people at Agathians as it would need to be
cleaned. By installing the wire mesh, we certainly hope to prevent this issue.

+B. Make some furniture. (For issue B)
We decided to make an office table for the staffs so that they can store important
documents. In addition we came up with the idea a making a trophy display cabinet that
will be place in the leaving room. The main idea behind is to expose the children talent
and achievement to the visitors.
Purpose: To serve as a storage area for files and important documents and also the
table top serves as a platform for installing printers.
Material: Recycled wood planks, galvanized steel hinges, L-support made out of
galvanized steel, plastic for wire clearance area, rubber bands/strips for prevention of
scratching.

The table will be used in the room next to the office
for storage of files and documents. The room is
usually used by the staff mainly but sometimes used
by few students to use printers.

When it comes to designing a good cabinet, there are many design options that offer an
attractive and efficient. One of the most effective plan is the L-shaped cabinet. As the
name implies, it calls for an L-shaped setup, cabinets installed on two perpendicular
walls and an open area in the center. This style of cabinet offers many advantages over
other designs, so it may be worth considering if we need an amazing suitable design for a
small area.
This kind of design gives us an open area in the center that can be used for many other
activities or stuffs, also regarding to the floor plan of the house, this design was the best
choice that we could come up with. Hence we designed an L-shaped cabinet, which has
enough space as well.

According to the dimensions of the L-shaped table, the table can be placed anywhere in
the 3 suggested positions. Hence giving the shelter more options.

+Furniture Materials
Each materials that we use for making the furniture were recycled and reusable materials
except for certain ones. The following is the details of the materials we used and the
analysis of expected lifespan and usage in the same time thus impacts on the
environment e.g. pollution, effect, etc.
All analysis of data of materials are listed and to ensure our materials are environmental
friendly to avoid excessive pollution and dumping of waste into the wilderness.
Other than that, this also listed the terms of durability and reliability of each material
used during its lifespan.

EFFECTS TO ENVIRONMENT
WOODEN PALLET PLANKS
Wooden pallet planks doesn’t affect the environment badly as it’s a composite material.
As the wooden planks are unused, these planks are meant to be decay into the
environment slowly. Most of these will last around 7 years in the open wilderness.
RECYCLED 9MM WOOD PANELS
This materials has similar effect as the wooden pallet planks as this is another
composite materials. Most of these will decay into the open wilderness if abandoned
for 7 years. Other than that, this can be recycled and reused over and over again to
reduce dumping of wooden panels.
NAILS
Due to prone of corrosion, metal nails can easily rust and damage within only less than
a week time. When the nails are thrown into the environment it does give some
negative impact such as toxins from the rust. These can be mostly seen thrown aside
because only certain nails can be recycled and reuse.

+Our objective was to search for resources and sponsors for our assignment. We came to know
later on that the task was not as simple as mentioned in the handout. Interacting with other people,
whom we have encountered in the past, we managed to be in the community and experience it.
Through the assignment, we came to know how strangers had noted our determinations and even
supported our work. We were achieving a project that concerned a bigger community, and due to
the fact that we established something that might be encountered by people other than ourselves
was a very pleased moment. Furthermore, our experience was discomfiting. Our group has to
agree that we come from a fortunate background. Yet, this will not prevent us to work very hard.
We did a vast range of tasks, from making furniture out of reused materials to creating a roof and
planting. We are mature enough to realize the amount of hard work it needs to perform certain
tasks and also learnt to adhere with the community that carry it everyday. In the past, some among
us have never tried simple gardening, or carpenter. This was an occasion to learn something new,
and everyone in the group shared with each other what they already know. During the few weeks
of work, as a group of friends we have also get to know each of us better, and learn to share. We
have come across several times of the term “environmental issues” that are afflicting our society,
and after conducting this assignment, we know that these problems are critical ones, and they are
occurring all around us at any given time. Conflicts such as pollution, depletion of resources and
also social issues such as lack of appropriate shelter are accumulating everyday. Even it can be
easy to presume that we are able to get away from these issues and its consequences. We think
that it is the duty of the whole community to comprehend these troubles and overcome them. As a
team, we have placed one step forward in decreasing and later eliminating these situations. “My
community, my commitment” must have been as a movement, instead of just an assignment and
to look for issues, that we can change and have the capacity to deal with it.
