REPERTOIRE PART II 2016/2017 WE COLLECT GOOD TUNES
WE COLLECT GOOD TUNES
Ladies and Gentlemen,
We cordially wish to invite you to ‘Collect good tunes’ for the 2016/2017 artistic season. There is no need for a course in sensitivity to sounds, just a small impulse and a fine space to discover them anew is all that is necessary. The Philharmonic is the right place for any seeker of positive energy and warm emotions. Right here is where they can become exceptional. We would like to encourage you to broaden your musical horizons, as was accurately ob-served by one of the greatest of jazz musicians Charlie Parker: ‘Music is your own experience, your thoughts and wisdom. […] They teach you

there’s a boundary line to music. But, man, there’s no boundary line to art.’This is where the wide diversity of genres and sounds of the season’s second part comes from and will be provided by the most outstanding art-ists from Poland and abroad, the discoverers of the most beautiful experiences that music brings, regardless of the genre. We will provide a charismatic guide in the person of our Artistic Director, Rune Bergmann, who to-gether with the whole Symphony Orchestra will take you into a world of passion, sensitivity and joy.
It’s an honour and a pleasure to introduce the second part of our season. This season has a huge variety of programing, soloists, conductors and most importantly musical styles. It feels great to be part of the innovative team in the management, and we continue our journey to be not just one of the most busy concert Halls in Europe, but also to be one of the best. I do look forward to meeting many of you during the concerts, and I hope you en-joy the new season together with us in your favourite Hall, and with your favourite orchestra. See you at the concerts,
PRINCIPAL CONDUCTOR OF THE SZCZECIN PHILHARMONIC

SEASON 2016/2017
Concert series for the 2016/2017 season
BRILLANTE [brilliantly, effectively]
This series of concerts is distinguished by the openness and brilliance in approach of the music: across the genres of music this spectacular drawing explores the wealth and diversity of the world of music. The series includes well-known pieces of music, as well as discovering sounds that in combination with the colours of the entire orchestra or of selected instruments and the energy of the outstand-ing performers, will appeal to a wide range of listeners.
DECISO [definitely]
This series involves the most renowned ensembles ap-plauded in the major concert halls of the world. It is a meeting with a real passion for music, which combined with the skill, experience and charisma of the artists, provides a unique opportunity to experience the colour-ful sound palette of chamber ensembles and orchestras.
ENERGICO [vigorously]
A series of concerts to feel an unbridled flow of musical energy. What is presented here is a combination of clas-sics with popular art. This creates the chance of meeting extremely interesting personalities, phenomenal sounds and moving lyrics. Artists appearing in the series invite you to join a musical journey enriched with a refined lit-erary layer.
ESPRESSIVO [expressively]FESTIVO [formally, celebratorily]
These concerts are associated with important historical events, anniversaries, and jubilees;especially from Szczecin’s history, as well as artists and musicians who have worked in this city over the centuries. The name of the series reflects the solemn and unique character of the musical compositions presented.
PIANOFORTE [quiet/loud, Italian: piano]
Amazing songs, virtuoso performances and the nobility of the sound of the king of instruments – the piano. Im-pressive and overwhelming piano music will be present-ed by masters of the ebony-and-ivory keys both during the symphonic concerts and recitals.
These events will fill the Philharmonic space with what is truly expressive and unique. The series will present out-standing stars of Polish and international jazz scenes, and the listeners will encounter intense emotions expressed with lyrical subtlety.
SEASON 2016/2017
FILM-HARMONY
The series includes symphonic and chamber concerts dur-ing which we will hear not only well-known and popular film themes, but also pieces specially composed to illustrate the unforgettable works of the silver screen.
GRANDIOSO [splendidly, majestically]
Grand artistic events which will present great symphonic works to celebrate special moments in the artistic season – such as the opening night or the finale of the season. Here events referring to the history of the city are also included.
SONORO [resonant]
SOUNDLABPhilharmonic laboratory of electronic music in Szczecin with lively communication between the musicians, the lis-tener and the space. The unusual shape of the Szczecin Philharmonic will serve here as a form in which the sound and the architectural shape intersect, thus helping us re-alise that complementarity is featured in all areas of art. The series formula, which can be called an architectural sound sequence, will allow for the presentation of a wide variety of musical pieces.
INTERMEZZO
A series of chamber music concerts in which outstanding artists from Szczecin will perform. The invited perform-ers are winners of prestigious competitions, authorities in their specialities, and musicians having active concert ac-tivity. They have all once been the holders of a President of Szczecin scholarship. The program of the Intermezzo series should please even the most fussy of music lovers with its artistic level and diversity. As well as the solo re-citals and concerts in the chamber lineups, you will also be able to admire the invited artists in the company of SMOK (Szczecin Youth Chamber Orchestra).
ANIMATO [Italian: with activity]
Concerts, whose main heroes are young talented and am-bitious artists who yearn the classics of musical literature in their experiences. An unquestioned asset of these con-certs is their youth and revitalizing force.
A series presenting the unusual sound of individual instru-ments, including those rarely appearing as solo or orchestra instruments. The program will also include musical piec-es which emphasise the sounds and hues of individual in-struments, instrumental groups and the entire orchestra.
SEASON 2016/2017
MISTERIOSO [mysteriously]
A series of chamber concerts whose programs and often intimate nature of the performances, at times involving only a few musicians, introduce a world of mysterious so-norities and musical dialogue. The events in the series are a great challenge for the performers: their true artistry is reflected in their sonic integrity, creative approach to mu-sical narration and close personal contact with the listener.
VIRTUOSO [lat. virtus – ability, excellence]
RUBATO [Italian: to steal, to rob]
Meaning freedom in rhythmical discipline, typically in tra-ditional music. It is also the name of a new series, which focuses on artists combining folk content with innovative forms. In the 2016/2017 season, the series will focus on the music of the Baltic states.
Virtuosos, distinguished instrumentalists will reach into musical material and present their masterful interpre-tations. In concert, next to the perfect technique and so-phisticated sounds, we can admire the most fascinating personalities of the contemporary world of music.

Hear good tunes – public program
‘Hear good tunes’ is a public program by the Szczecin Philharmonic. Its aim is to make the citizens of our region think about the way and the place they listen to music. What are good tunes? Is hearing and listen-ing the same thing? Does volume kill music? We will answers these questions and more during this artistic season. We want to remind our music lovers what good tunes are; to bring back their value. When we listen wherever and any which way, we lose what is most important in the music – its sound, it’s mood.
Our ears receive half a product. How is this possible?
Even the most popular file format nowadays ‘mp3’ may be lacking a full sound spectrum. To guarantee the highest quality, it is worth lis-tening to music performed live. Find time and come to the concert hall. The superior acoustics will convey to the pluck of a string, a keystroke or the voice of a singer. This is where we hear every single sound, even silence. Sometimes we forget that silence constitutes music too. The Philharmonic warmly extends an invitation
to everyone who wants to listen to music un-der fine conditions. Participation in concerts is a great way to begin to learn how to listen. The varied repertoire will suit everybody from purists to classics lovers: contemporary inter-pretations of classical compositions and pieces by young valued artists. Classical music is an ideal therapy. It reduces hearing disorders. We invite everyone who is not indifferent to mu-sic and its quality. We have no mercy for poor sound quality. We collect good tunes for you.

Ladies and Gentlemen,
For us the Philharmonic is a place which inspires, teaches, gives joy and excitement. We endeavour to take care of the needs and comfort of each and every listener. To do so we need to be sensitive to quality and this in turn means taking care of every detail. After the question of what to present to our guests, an-other follows: how? To take care of this vital aspect, we have turned our attention to hearing. This is the idea behind the pub-lic educational program ‚‘Hear good tunes’. Hearing tests, bill-boards in urban spaces, workshops, and artistic and educational events, as well as a concert on World Music Day, are just sev-eral of the chosen elements in our campaign. Ladies and gen-tlemen, we would like to encourage you to take care of your health and comfort with us, and then to enjoy listening carefully to music. In return, we will present you with good tunes, those which make the world more colourful, interesting and joyful.
Dorota SerwaManaging Director
of the Mieczysław Karłowicz Philharmonic in Szczecin
Every day we are repeatedly exposed to stress, which is why it is worth relaxing while listening to your favourite music. Yet we must remember to following a few basic rules of hearing care – not to listen for too long, nor to music too loud, and to use good quality equipment. These factors will allow us to enjoy good and healthy hearing for many years to come. According to research, the fre-quency of hearing disorders rises with age. Permanent hearing loss occurs in only 0.1% of the youngest children. This number begins to rise with age, which results from overlapping personal and en-vironmental predispositions: e.g. exposure to noise or taking med-icines harmful to hearing. Hearing screening performed on school children shows that even one in six children may have hearing problems, which later have a significant importance in the devel-opment of the child and their schools results. Statistics connect-ed with hearing damage look even worse as far as older persons are concerned – hearing disorders occur in 25% of those aged 65+ and 33% of persons aged 75+. The ‘Hear good tunes’ program is absolutely necessary. It may save the health of many people, and it will surely pass on advice on how to take care of your hearing.
