The dental laboratory industry has changed faster and more significantly

in recent years than at any other time in history and will likely continue

to change in the future. As dental technicians, you are confronted daily

with challenges to continue to provide high-quality work in record time

constantly striving to achieve a consistent product. How do you do it?

I think you would agree with me that the quality of your work is measured

by your knowledge, your experience gained on the job or by attending

continuing education courses, and, lastly, but of equal importance… the

tools you use.

Since the success that Renfert enjoys today was built by the loyalty and

support of you, our valued customer, what better way to help overcome

some of those challenges you face than by providing you with testimoni-

als from some of the leading clinicians in the dental industry about the

tools they use… the Renfert tools!

I’m sure you’ll find their testimonials interesting and informative and,

hopefully, they will help make the daily challenges you face seem a little

less daunting by helping you select the right tools for you… the Renfert

tools!

luke s. kAHngLuke S. Kahng, CDT, is an accomplished dental technician with over twenty years of experience in the field of cosmetic restorations. He is the founder and owner of LSK121 Oral Prosthetics, a dental laboratory in Naperville, IL.Mr. Kahng has published over thirty articles in many prestigious dental publica-tions such as PPAD, Inside Dentistry, The Journal of the American Academy of Dentistry, Spectrum Dialogue and Dental Lab Products, among others. Some of his specializations include the LSK121 Treatment Plan Wax-Up™ Tech-nique, an ideal method for all high cosmetic cases, and biomechanical design of occlusal surfaces, focusing on reconstructive and esthetic dentistry. Another is the development of the 3D shade conversion table for GC Initial™ Porcelain – now used worldwide. Two of his most recent publications are the Anatomy From Nature book, and Es-thetics Guide Book. His six Patient Education Brochures include detailed informa-tion about many LSK products, such as No-Prep LSK Veneers™. His Smile Selec-tion™ book and Anterior/Posterior Characterization Guide Chart™ are both ideal for help in the selection of anterior makeovers. His three LSK posters, detailing full-mouth wax-up design and full-mouth porcelain, were designed with both the clinician and the technician in mind. In fact, all of LSK121’s Media Collection tools are designed for use by the dentist/patient/technician team.

“The Vario jet sandblaster is fully automatic but can also be used in a manual mode. The design allows for fine results and gives the technician the freedom to prioritize his time. Use it with metal casting and pressed ce-ramic material and never worry about maintaining pressure control. Since more than one restoration can be sandblasted at a time, the technician can be productive elsewhere.

I am appreciative of the time saving effectiveness of this product.

I love GEO Natural Wax by Renfert. The product is completely reliable for its excellent form and shape. Carving is very easy when using the product to create natural tooth morphology.

When the Waxlectric tip is applied to the model, there is no question that the application will be accurate.

Consequently, shaping the contours is made easier by the precision of the material and the instruments. When I cast and press the wax, the final outcome is predictable and correct. My time and material usage are conservatively saved when I use this product.

The efficiency of GEO Natural Wax and the Waxlectric unit by Renfert can’t be overestimated.“

The GEO Anatomics are incredible “anatomically shaped wax bite rims, in accordance with biodynamic prin-cipals.” Their pre-formed set-ups of

universal sizes for occlusion anatomy make it possible for even a beginner to create beautiful esthetics just by following the guideline. The construction of pressed to metal and pressed to zirconia restorations can be increased through use of this time-saving product.

GEO Aesthetics pre-formed wax units are an exceptional time conserv-ing product for creating a wax-up, especially six or more anterior teeth. The technician can concentrate on the design of each particular patient’s case when he uses this product, rather than worrying about creating each tooth on an individual basis.

Renfert Takanishi brush tips are excellent staining tools. The bristles are rigid, not too flexible and offer tremendous control for the techni-cian when he uses the product. The pointed edge of the tip allows for 100% accuracy during pit staining.

The OPUS carving tools are absolutely precise when creating deep anatomy, including dissection grooves and pits. There is no tool more dependable for predictable performance. I love the razor-sharp exactitude of the instru-ments.

Renfert USA’s excellent product line is easy to recommend. The time, aggravation and cost they have saved my laboratory is absolutely remark-able. The quality of the German tech-nology and engineering is without question excellent. I’ve also been very grateful to the company for the opportunity to further my own and my technicians’ continuing study of tooth morphology and occlusion knowledge. Our leisure time has been spent in these pursuits because Renfert products have given us more of it to spend!

Renfert Top spin pinhole drilling unit is a model technician’s dream. It can be used at either a 16º angle while seated or with a straight view while standing, due to the swivel base. There is a small dust box at the

bottom of the unit for dumping ease - leading to no machine clogs. Drilling is smooth and easy on the first attempt; there is no need to re-push the model through several times. Retention is optimal and changing the pins inside the drill bit is extremely easy and quick due to the efficiency of the engineering.

luke s. kAHngluke s. kAHng

My model technicians love this unit. The time and effort they are conserv-ing cannot be more obvious when compared with the units we have used in the past.

The Renfert Tropical Tray is extreme-ly easy to handle. Its even surface makes the product very controllable and never runny because it always diffuses and dispenses the correct amount of fluid. Its design helps make any of the intricate work I complete when creating a build-up easy and predictable. My porcelain work is much better ac-complished when I use the Tropical Tray.

Our Renfert equipment proves itself everyday to be one of the best invest-ments we’ve made in ourselves, our cli-ents and their patients’ health care.Renfert Basic quattro IS BlasterRenfert blasters are simply the best. We use the Basic quattro IS model. The IS stands for “Immediate stop” which is an important feature in our work. The unit doesn’t have to constantly build pressure so it’s always instant on with uniform spray and immediate stop of abrasive flow. Wasted abrasive is minimized and we can accurately and safely devest the finest details of all-porcelain, pressable ceramics, and precision attachments without fear of destroying contour or fit.We use four abrasive supply tanks and can instantly select the correct abrasive for the task at hand. The internal illu-

mination of 2400 LUX is a very well lit chamber where it’s always easy to see exactly what we’re doing. At VIVIDX we use the Renfert Twister evolution pro Mixer because it is powerful, compact and absolutely re-liable. With ten available programs, each with up to seven custom param-eters, we can pre-set the evolution pro to automatically and consistently perform all our mixing operations. And with five bowl sizes, we can mix for sin-gle case or multi-case batch needs. The Twister evolution pro is com-pletely self-contained with a built-in vacuum pump and only requires one 120 volt power connection. There is no external suction or air supply required. It will be easy for us to add a second or third Twister evolution pro as we grow.”

Tools don’t make the laboratory tech-nician, but they certainly can enhance both the quality of the work product and the efficiency with which the labo-ratory operates. That’s why I choose a wide variety of Renfert products for my own laboratory. For excellence in de-

sign, quality in product craftsmanship, and tremendous durability, Renfert products are top of the line!

In my 30+ years as a dental lab owner and technician, I have purchased my fair share of tools and equipment from a number of manufacturers. Each item purchased for the lab was supposed to make my life easier, enhance case esthetics, keep the lab cleaner, or save time so that I could get out of the lab on time. Often the products did not

live up to expectations or they simply did not survive the grueling demands of day-to-day lab use. Most of my hand tools used for wax-ing, carving, and composite build-ups bear the Renfert name. All of the waxing tools have hexagonal shaped handles for accurate, comfortable grip. They are all very lightweight and have various tips designed for carving, cut-ting, or shaping wax. Renfert’s elec-tronic waxing unit, the Waxlectric, has a superior design to other brands I have previously used. The unit has two separate heat controls, one for each spatula. I like my bulk wax spoon for be fairly hot.

My smaller wax spoon is set to warm, and I use this tip for finesse festooning. Many different tips are offered for both denture fabrication and for crown and bridge waxing.

My Renfert brand Waxprofi has the largest reservoir that I have ever seen along with a tapered steel rim around the edge so dripping wax ends up back in the reservoir and not on the desk. The unit also has a very accurate heat control. It holds my base plate wax for bulk application before festooning.

The angled chisel for collar carving. This in-strument is perfect for creating the sulcus around the necks of the teeth.

The small Ceramicus brush is for intricate work. Placing small amount of composite or porcelain accurately is what this brush is used for.

Page 9: Renfert USA Clinicians Report

9

I also use Renfert’s Vario E wax unit. The Vario E has three separately con-trolled heat wells with tapered rims. I keep hard setup wax in the first well, a softer wax in the second well, and

sticky wax in the third well. Each com-partment can be set at the ideal tem-perature. At my grinding bench, I have a Renfert suction unit. It is strong enough to handle heavy acrylic, stone, and metal grindings safely and efficiently. The machine is extremely easy to use and is connected to my lathes and trimmers to turn on when I start grinding and shut off when I am finished. At my lab, I offer naturalized denture bases to my clients utilizing composite stains and pastes. The Artmix is a must when working with composites. The black palette is to store and mix paste composites. The green rubber dish at-tachment is for gel or liquid compos-ites. The Artmix has a black cover to place on top or both working areas to

The big spoon at work. This large spoon tip is for bulk placement of waxes. I keep this spatula rather hot to flow large volumes of wax over the buccal portion of the wax try-in in prep for final festooning and carving

The festooning carver is used to create the natural looking tissue contours. The discoid is the correct diameter to create lifelike root structures.

The tips are flexible yet extremely durable. For the placement of com-posite gels or liquid, the Ceramicus brushes from Renfert win the award! These beautiful wood handled hand-made brushes have a very unique feature. The bristles are synthetic and hydrophilic. Once the brush is wet, it stays wet for a long time. Rewetting between brush strokes or retrieving more composite is unnecessary. The wet tip allows the gel or liquid com-posite to flow off of the brush tip for accurate placement. Cleaning these brushes is easy. Just run them under cold water and shake. Once the denture is waxed, processed, and naturalized, it must be polished. Renfert does not fall short in this area either. The buff wheels and polish-ing wheels hold Renfert’s high shine agent deeply so that there is no need to keep reapplying. The high shine ma-terial is just fantastic! Only a light touch is all that is needed to achieve a bril-liant high luster shine on the denture base that will repel stains and plaque. Renfert products make life around Collis Prosthodontic Laboratory a lot easier. Take my advice; reinvent your laboratory with Renfert.

Durable flexible placement tools that last. These tips help place composite paste where it belongs. Tough enough to place material but flexible enough to smooth it. I use these tools to build additional root structure.

protect the materials from light when not in use. The black palate is a snap to clean, just wipe of the paste. To clean the rubber cups just light cure the ma-terial in place and simply pop it out. I think Renfert also makes the best tools for placement of composite in the industry. The wide array of tips makes it a snap to place composite pastes where you need them accu-rately.

The ultimate waxing trio. Renfert’s Waxprofi, the Vario E and the electronic waxing unit, the Waxlectric are essential for consistent temperature control of your waxing tips and most of all your waxes. Burnt wax loses its handling properties and becomes dirty which causes poor esthetics.

The larger Ceramicus brushes are for larg-er applications. I use this brush for wiping wider areas of the denture base with darker composite stains to highlight the blanched or lighter stain pigments of the denture base below the necks of the teeth.

The composite team. All the tools you need to perfect your composite work.

Renfert MT Plus Dry Trimmer and Vortex 2L compact vacuumOur model person loves this trimmer vacuum combination. Both the trim-mer and vacuum are easy to keep clean and it is so easy to adjust the table with the turn of the knob underneath. The key to remove the blade is conve-niently located inside the door for easy removal. And it is so quiet you don’t even realize it is on when you walk in the room. Study models are a dream to trim on this machine, as are all your other models. For time saving, accuracy and cleanliness, we highly recommend this set-up.Renfert VibraxAgain our model person is impressed with our latest addition to the Renfert collection in our lab. With up to 8 set-tings on this vibrator, any type of stone can be poured with accuracy and with-out disturbing any soft model work on the bench. This gives us greater ef-ficiency of space in a frequently high traffic area. The ball attachment on the side makes an excellent pouring sur-face for impressions. And pouring den-ture flasks is a pleasure with this machine.

Renfert Mobiloscope microscopesWe have been using these in the lab for over nine years. They have been very reliable and low maintenance (the odd light bulb to replace). With a magnifi-cation of up to 20x they might be con-sidered overkill by some, but we find the extra step is what it’s all about.Renfert Vario E and Waxprofi wax-pots + Waxlectric I & II Our waxing has become predictably accurate since using these waxing pots and tools. For crown and bridge and implant wax ups, in conjunction with the Renfert waxes (which I recommend highly for ease of use and strength) I have accurate, reliable results. And our denture person adores the wide wax up tool for quick finishing of denture wax ups at just the right temperature. Besides saving us time, these tools maintain a cleaner, cooler work envi-ronment which ultimately works out to savings in hydro as well! When looking for reliable, quality prod-ucts Renfert always springs to mind!Andrew Long, R.D.T.

Traveling the country to teach and install pressable ceramics and press-to-metal systems, I am amazed at the equipment and materials utilized by labs to facilitate these processes. If labs would only realize that the proper equipment and materials can make them so much more consistent and productive. I will touch on just a few of the situations I commonly see that can increase their output along with in-creasing the morale of the technicians. Pressing ceramics, whether all-ceramic or PTM (press-to-metal), is basically in-jection molding utilizing the lost-wax process with high heat investments. The closer the wax-up is to the final working contour, the less work neces-sary to finish the final ceramic restora-tion.

I have used the Waxlectric II for many years in conjunction with the Vario E, the Hotty LED, and GEO Avantgarde waxes. Simply put, they make me more productive with better results. Having the GEO Avantgarde univer-sal and occlusal waxes prewarmed to a softened butter consistency in the Vario E, I can reduce the temperature of the small and large tips so that the wax is not overheated and sets almost instantly when flowing from the tips... similar to drawing with a fountain pen.

I am amazed at how many labs have their electric waxers set to an extreme-ly high temperature to vaporize their room temperature wax, thereby losing almost all control of shaping or place-ment! The process I use is much faster and easier:

1) Dip with the Hotty LED and GEO dip wax to get a consistent coping, 2) use the Waxlectric II with the GEO Avant-garde universal wax for the bulk of the wax buildup, 3) apply the GEO occlusal wax with just the right temperature from the Waxlectric II and the Vario E to “draw” the occlusion exactly where you want it. After refinement of your wax-up, you sprue and invest hope-fully using a superior vacuum invester like the Twister evolution.

One nice feature of this equipment is the programmable consistency which allows you to customize its operation for your investment. Pre-vacuum be-fore spatulation allows for hydrogen gas to be eliminated to a higher de-gree, thus keeping bubbles to a mini-mum. Many labs have old or marginal equipment and do not realize the smoothness of the investment when mixed optimally. Burnout and pressing of the invested restorations is now per-formed and once the rings have cooled the most tedious part of the process begins... devesting. I come across so many labs with less than adequate sand-blasting equip-ment. This can be one of the biggest drains of time... and therefore profit. In the realm of affordable, proficient,

Page 13: Renfert USA Clinicians Report

13

and reliable sand blasters, I always rec-ommend the Basic quattro IS. It is ev-erything necessary for any glass bead-ing or sandblasting job the lab will run across. In addition, the IS (instant shut-off of abrasive flow) feature will save the lab hundreds of dollars a year at a minimum.Couple this with the Vortex compact 2L and you have a unit that has its own suction on demand, with a vacuum de-signed for abrasives. With what labs spend on “shop vacs” which burn out when used with abrasives, they could get a superior and quieter piece of equipment designed for the job that will last years. As a final and small note, I particularly like using the Goat hair brushes with a diamond paste when polishing the oc-clusal surfaces of the pressed restora-tions. They don’t leave any annoying “skid marks” when they heat up like the common polishing brushes do. They are also superior when polishing composites or temporaries. In summary, I only support products or materials I trust and can rely on. Ren-fert’s equipment and materials never let you down.

Sometime in the early 80‘s while giv-ing a hands-on ceramic course I had the opportunity to try a Renfert brush. Little did I know this was the beginning of a wonderful long term professional relationship.

Each Renfert product I tried became an important part of my lab, lectures and courses. With top quality and durabil-ity every product, over all these years, has performed to perfection. Our most recent acquisition the Vibrax has been terrific, making our models the best ever. Thank you Renfert for becom-ing such an integral part of raising the quality of our industry.

Model and Die Preparation:Back To The FutureThere’s no question that the contin-ued evolution of CAD/CAM is having a tremendous impact in dental tech-nology and will ultimately change the way we do things. It’s also apparent that the accuracy of our models and dies is vital to the success of “scanned and printed” patterns and machined restorations. If we are to truly benefit from these new technologies, our models and dies must establish the levels of accu-racy and stability that ensure not only laboratory success, but patient success as well.Proper technique and consistently ac-curate procedures are the most effi-cient paths to superior lab work and I’m pleased to review the Renfert Millo pro Arch Trimmer and Top spin drilling machine. I also invite you to visit the myStandards web site to view samples of the instructional videos we are pre-paring for standardized model and die preparation: ww.robertbergercdt.comMillo pro Arch Trimmer Renfert equipment has certainly helped me define myStandards over the years. And the new Millo pro Arch Trimmer has set my new standard for precision and productivity in trimming die models.

The Millo pro has the perfect size and mass making it extremely stable when trimming die stone or resin arch mod-els. The built-in suction port keeps the working field clear of all debris when connected to your vacuum system. Physically, it’s incredibly stable and the 2270 RPM speed easily and quickly re-moves stone from the lingual arch of the die model. Two burrs are available for the unit: the six-fluted coarse ta-per removes excess stone very quickly and the fine cross-cut taper creates a very smooth and accurate surface. But the feature that has really had a tremendous impact on my Standards is the adjustable burr height. On the front of the unit is a large adjustment wheel that let’s you set the height of the cutting burr in uniform steps. For trimming the lingual and facial as-pects of the die model, you can adjust the burr height so it does not contact

any inappropriate areas of the model. With the Millo pro I can achieve per-fectly smooth beveled edges that can not lock into the base model. And I can do it quickly and accurately.

Page 17: Renfert USA Clinicians Report

17

Top spin Drilling Machine The new Top spin drilling machine from Renfert has also taken a “must have” place in my lab. It upholds the Renfert tradition of superior mechani-cal design and breaks new ground in efficient ergonomics. The Top spin has a unique adjustable base that tilts the unit forward about 16 degrees. This is a terrific new feature that let’s me sit in

a relaxed position to perform pin hole drilling operations. The sight lines re-main unobstructed, the fine red laser is always spot-on, and the smooth de-

pression action of the table make drill-ing accurate pin holes very easy and consistent.I use several different dowel pin sys-tems depending upon the specific re-quirements of each case. The Top spin lets me precisely control the depth of the hole I drill for each and every pin I use. An adjustable thumb wheel, right on the back of the unit, raises and low-ers the drilling table to precisely set the hole depth. And I can do it in a second without having to disassemble the drilling machine or struggle with an old style chuck-wrench to change the drill height. Using the Renfert Stepped Pin Drill and just a simple turn of the wheel I can even drill a hole with a step, for pins that have a shoul-der, making my Top spin a universal la-ser drilling machine.

I‘ve been a Dental Technician and Lab-oratory owner for 40 plus years and my history with Renfert Products goes back to the 1980‘s when I purchased a Renfert Porex Vibrator. Which by the way, works as well today as it did the first day I got it!There have been quite a few Renfert additions to my laboratory since then, in fact my laboratory now resembles the latest Renfert Catalogue.Renfert obviously places a lot of im-portance in producing equipment that is very well designed, engineered, and built to last, as do I. The latest addi-

tion is the new Millo pro Dental Arch Trimmer (palatal router). In the past we trimmed the palatal areas of mod-els using arbor bands on an old bench lathe that slid around a lot. A very dusty and time consuming proposition. Now with the Millo pro the job takes only a few seconds, the models look better and the machine hooks up directly to our suction system so there‘s no more mess!Having the right equipment for the job makes everything easier and more ef-ficient, and for my money Renfert has the right stuff!

Renfert Waxlectric IIOver the years, I have had the oppor-tunity to work with several different electric waxers. The Renfert Waxlectric II is, by far, the most reliable and accu-rate waxer on the market. I have been using them in the laboratory and in my hands-on waxing seminars* for several years. They are used and shipped fre-quently and I have never experienced a breakdown.

quickly alter from 2 bars PSI to 4 bars PSI, based on the task. In addition, the foot control allows for hands-free op-eration.

Renfert Proform-12This additive, as a carrying medium for mixing and maintaining moist porce-lain, is a must-have. It greatly improves porcelain placement, color and den-sity. When blotting, I use artist blotting paper rather than tissue.I depend on these Renfert products on a daily basis because they are quality materials which withstand the rigors of the laboratory and teaching envi-ronments.

You may not know that I’ve been pur-chasing Renfert products since 1987. In 1987 Klaus Rieger stopped by my lab that year to show me some samples that he wanted me to try. One of them was the Girrbach articulator, named after his sister Ruth. He had great products to show and wanted me try some new materials that he was intro-ducing. I knew then that I wanted to use his products. We had a great time and I happened to have a bottle of Kabinett wine that I shared with him. Now I always look in magazines to see what Renfert has new to show. When Klaus picked you to run the company, he picked the right person

to pass the baton to. Not only are your products outstanding products, but also the support of you and your com-pany has always impressed me. I really appreciate your support. We use many of your products, but I didn’t realize how many until I looked around the lab. The one I am most im-pressed with is the dust extraction unit. We have bought many brands of dust extraction units that have failed in just a couple of years. We use your unit for the sand blaster and didn’t realize that we only had to use it on level 2 out of 9. At level 2 the unit is exceptionally quiet.

The Renfert Waxlectric II, Waxprofi and Vario E are an integral part of my gingival waxing technique. The large denture spoon on the Waxelectric II, enables me to efficiently create gingi-val contours utilizing an additive wax-ing technique. Integrating an electric waxer combined with the Waxprofi and Vario E into my technique has in-creased productivity while providing me with the control of wax placement I desire. The Waxprofi and Vario E enables me to control melting points of the wax thus preventing burning and separa-

This gingival waxing technique utilizing Renfert products has enabled my to create added value in my busi-ness while extending my personalized prosthetic product line.
