Dr. Matthew Myer Boulton President and Professor of Theology

With this annual report, we invite you to

Dan Evans Chair, Board of Trustees

join us in celebratingthe past year at CTS, and thanking God for the many ways — in classrooms and café conversations, chapel services and public events — that all of our minds are renewed every day.

We celebrate new and newly invigorated educational programs, including the world’s first PhD in African American Preaching and Sacred Rhetoric. We celebrate how so many at CTS are putting our hands and our hearts to work on some of the most pressing issues of the day in Central Indiana, putting faith into action. We celebrate the arrival of our extraordinary new dean of faculty, Dr. Leah Gunning Francis. And most of all, we celebrate our students and alumni, extraordinary children of God learning to lead, heal and love the world.

As a school with origins rooted in the abolitionist movement, CTS is deeply committed to an active, renewing Christian faith. Read on to learn more about how our work this year has engaged the five core practices at the heart of who we are: inspire, lead, serve, love and live.

Even as we celebrate, we are profoundly grateful and humbled by your prayers and support. Our mission — to form disciples of Jesus Christ for church and community leadership to serve God’s transforming of the world — is as important for God’s creation as it’s ever been. We hope you’ll join us on the journey ahead, for the sake of the next generation of leaders who inspire, lead, serve, love and live out ministries worth celebrating.

CTS Introduces the World’s First PhD in African American Preaching and Sacred RhetoricYears in the making, CTS announced its new doctoral program, which will focus on the special role that preaching has in the African American community, viewing it as an art form, a force for social change, and an area overdue for academic study. “The pulpit has always been a place of tremendous influence in the African American community, and the CTS PhD will prepare men and women with both the scholarship and practical understanding of preaching to be worthy of that call,” said Rev. Dr. Frank Thomas, Nettie Sweeney and Hugh Th. Miller Professor of Homiletics at CTS and Director of the Academy of Preaching and Celebration. “This has the potential to ignite a preaching renaissance in the U.S. that could lead to a revival of American Christianity in the 21st century.” CTS will welcome the inaugural PhD class in January 2017.

Communicating and interpreting the Christian faith through scholarship, worship and everyday acts of ministry is an immersive, inclusive and inspiring adventure at CTS.

An OPEN EmbraceIn April, CTS announced an agreement with OPEN, a collective of post-evangelical, progressive evangelical, non-denominational and free-church tradition organizations, leaders, churches and networks. The agreement makes the CTS MDiv available to OPEN members by offering classes in Indianapolis and other cities around the U.S., so students do not have to reside near CTS to obtain the CTS degree.

And because all CTS MDiv students can take advantage of nationwide classes, weeklong intensive classes, online classes, and standard semester schedules, CTS continues to make the MDiv journey more accessible and affordable for students juggling work and family obligations. Classes begin in January 2017.

To promote the OPEN MDiv arrangement, CTS and OPEN hosted a popular speakers tent at the Wild Goose Festival in North Carolina.

Moral Monday Founder and Civil Rights Activist William Barber Preaches at CTS

Dr. William Barber, President of the North Carolina NAACP, pastor of Greenleaf Christian Church in St. Goldsboro, NC, and founder of the Moral Mondays civil rights movement, preached in the CTS Chapel during Black History Month events. An acclaimed national activist and advocate on civil disobedience, Dr. Barber is an outspoken critic of inequality. His efforts have reinvigorated social justice movements across the nation.

Commencement Celebrates 45 Graduates and Honors Faith LeadersA trainer of African American church leaders, a pioneer in pastoral counseling, and the pastor of a global congregation who is known as a worldwide advocate for justice were recognized with honorary degrees during Christian Theological Seminary’s 2016 Commence-ment ceremony on May 21. We also celebrated with 45 graduates and their families and friends on the grand occasion of completing their studies at CTS.

Dr. Lawrence Carter, Dean of the Martin Luther King, Jr. Interna-tional Chapel at Morehouse College, was awarded the Honorary Doctor of Divinity for his impact in helping to train leaders for the African American church and society through Morehouse’s Chapel Assistants program, as well as for leading the Chapel’s mission in the development of the Beloved World Community.

Dr. Sue Cardwell, CTS Professor Emerita of Psychology and Counseling, was awarded the Honorary Doctor of Humane Letters in recognition of her many years of pioneering service offering healing and hope to countless students, clients and colleagues. She retired from CTS in 1988, after joining the seminary’s staff in 1962 and joining the faculty in 1979.

Dr. Joel C. Hunter, senior pastor of Northland, A Church Distrib-uted of Longwood, Fla., received the Honorary Doctor of Divinity for his pioneering work in congregational ministry and leadership, and for his inspiring advocacy of civil rights, environmental issues, and other matters of justice.

Dr. Leah Gunning Francis Joins CTSOn June 1, Dr. Leah Gunning Francis joined CTS as Vice President of Academic Affairs and Dean of the Faculty. Through scholarship and social justice advocacy, Dr. Francis’ work emphasizes how communities of faith can convene and engage diverse constituencies to address some of society’s most pressing problems. Dr. Francis relocated to CTS from Saint Louis, where she chronicled reactions to Michael Brown’s death in Ferguson and Faith: Sparking Leadership & Awakening Community (Chalice Press, 2015).Le

Equipping individuals to lead is central to CTS’ mission of forming disciples of Jesus Christ to serve God’s transforming of the world. Through classroom learning, public programs and campus resources, CTS is developing the next generation of leaders.

Grants Enhance Library ResourcesScott Seay, CTS Associate Professor of the History of Christianity and Director of the Doctor of Ministry Program, and Anthony Elia, Director of Library and Educational Technology, earned grants to bolster CTS’ library and archives. More CTS Classes Connect Students, Clergy and CommunityOpen-to-the-public Lifelong Learning courses — including “Atheism Old and New,” “Heaven and Hell” and “Eco-Jus-tice: Human Well Being on a Thriving Earth” — attracted increased public participation in the 2015-16 academic year. These Lifelong Learners join with seminary students and clergy members in spiritual debate, ethics discussions and exam-inations of global and local issues. And because they are not pursuing academic degrees, the cost per credit hour is reduced.

global map that will depict key events in the history of the Christian Church (Disciples of Christ). CTS will house the map and invite collaborators to use this interactive resource.

CTS partnered with Abilene Christian University to admin-ister a $30,000 grant from the Wabash Center for Teaching and Learning in Theology and Religion. The grant funded “The Pedagogy of the Archive” colloquium held in Dallas-Ft. Worth. Honoring historians, librarians and archivists from Stone-Campbell Movement academic institutions, the colloquium initiated collabora-tion toward a digital archive of historical materials supporting teaching.

Media Appearances Engage CommunitiesLocal and national media helped to tell the CTS story in 2016. In monthly TV news segments, CTS Counseling Center staff shared their expertise on topics ranging from depression in the workplace to managing holiday stress. Local media also covered student protests and a prayer vigil for Orlando. NPR’s Indi-anapolis affiliate interviewed faculty and friends on a variety of topics connected to CTS events. The Indianapolis Business Journal did a deep dive on CTS’ ongoing initiatives to transform pastoral education, and the Washington Post reported on the African American PhD program.

Anti-Defamation League Interfaith Director Lectures at CTSOn the heels of Holy Week, CTS partnered with the Jewish Community Relations Council to welcome Rabbi David Fox Sandmel, Director of Interfaith Affairs for the Anti-Defamation League. Rabbi Sandmel delivered an interfaith lecture entitled, “What Can Christians Learn About the New Testament from Jews?” and spoke with the local NPR affiliate about efforts to break down barriers between people of faith.

the 2015 Spirit & Place Festival. Brooks challenged the audience to consider rebalancing “resumé virtues” such as success, wealth and status with “character virtues” such as kindness, honesty and faithfulness. Brooks also met with CTS friends at a reception before the event and signed books afterward.

Serving others is integral to our Christian faith. Whether leading or walking alongside, CTS students, faculty and alumni live out a calling to serve.

CTS Alums in Public Office CTS alumnus Joe Hogsett was elected Mayor of Indianapolis in November 2015, and he appointed another CTS alum, Rev. Dr. David Hampton, deputy mayor of neighborhood engagement. Where did the two meet? At CTS, of course! Both have remained active in seminary life, appearing on a CTS panel addressing violence in Indianapolis, for example. Making Indianapolis a safer and more welcoming city are top priorities for the Hogsett administration.

President Matthew Myer Boulton, Mayor Joe Hogsett, and Dean Leah Gunning Francis spoke together at a press conference to announce the City of Indianapolis’ support for CTS’ new Faith & Action Project, a poverty-fighting initiative.

Exploring System Change to End HungerDave Miner, a trustee for both CTS and Bread for the World, along with Matthew Myer Boulton, CTS President and Bread for the World Trustee, convened civic and business leaders to explore how systems change can unlock solutions to some of humanity’s most pressing problems, including hunger. The spring public work-shop preceded a Fall 2016 Lifelong Learning course on using system change to end hunger.

CTS Visiting Professor, led 25 CTS trustees, staff, faculty and students on a 12-day journey to South Africa. The delegation met with leaders and young activists still working to undo the damage of apartheid, and participated in a forum on racism, violence and human dignity. A highlight of the visit was meeting with Arch-bishop Desmond Tutu and his daughter, Reverend Mpho Tutu, executive director of the Tutu Legacy Foundation.

13

Desmond Tutu Youth Fellows Program The Desmond Tutu Center selected its first group of Youth Fellows, young people from Central Indiana who traveled to South Africa to learn about reconciliation, social justice work and community devel-opment. Upon returning to Indiana, participants are applying what they learned to a local social justice project. Ultimately, the program will provide a framework for young people to emerge as community peacemakers. It is supported by a grant from the Simon Family Foundation.

Supporting Partners of Church LeadersAs a pastor’s wife for more than three decades, certified life coach Dr. Joyce Thomas under-stands the stress and isolation that may accompany being a pastor’s partner. Through the Academy of Preaching and Celebration at CTS, Dr. Thomas hosts short retreats that allow clergy spouses and life partners to talk honestly about the chal-lenges they face and lift one another up in a supportive, safe environment. She recently launched a blog celebrating the role of the clergy spouse and is planning addi-tional programs.

“With my soul at rest and time to reflect on the first five years of my ministry, I felt a strong sense of contentment about my work, and a sense of joy about returning to that work at the end of the sabbatical.” The experience prompted Rev. Faires to become an advocate for church leaders taking time away from their roles in the church, so that they can renew perspective on their calling and serve their congregations with renewed energy.

Caring for NeighborsThe Counseling Center at CTS offered its annual free depression screenings and couples checkups this year, inviting Central Indiana residents to gauge their need for mental health services and break down misunderstandings associated with mental health treatment. The Counseling Center also entered into an agreement with CTS’ neighbor, the Martin Luther King Community Center, to provide services onsite.

15

Clergy Renewal Program Fosters Reflection and RenewalThe Lilly Endowment Clergy Renewal Programs at Christian Theological Seminary provide an opportunity for pastors to step away from the obliga-tions of daily parish life and to engage in a period of renewal and reflection. Returning from one such experience in Sri Lanka, Rev. Diane Faires wrote,

Love

Tending to the hearts of others by sharing gifts and resources is an integral part of practicing compassionate care.

14

Connecting Psyche and SpiritFor 18 years, CTS’ Spirituality and Psychotherapy Conference has attracted mental health practi-tioners who seek to better understand the connection between spirit and psyche. This year’s conference featured Dr. Jeanne Stevenson-Moessner, Professor of Pastoral Care at Perkins School of Theology and a leading scholar on theology and psychology. Participants explored the quest to reach one’s fullest potential, healing from the injurious emotion of envy, and using spiritual imagery in clinical work.

Chapel Assistant Bere Gil Soto Helps Create Inspiring Worship ExperienceBelieving that “We worship not only with our culture, but also with our sorrows and long-ings,” student Bere Gil Soto concluded a three-year stint as Chapel Assistant—along the way reforming how CTS does weekly worship. Her primary contributions have been to integrate elements that celebrate diversity within the congre-gation and to empower indi-viduals to bring their personal stories into the worship service. She also created a matrix that allowed for better planning and communications about who would be preaching and serving.

Four Decades of Keeping the Doors OpenAfter 44 years of service, our institutional memory, Ralph Riddle, is retiring from the CTS facilities department. Ralph is known at CTS for consistently helping those in need — whether it was the gifts of his talent or whatever treasure he could spare. Asked why he has been so generous, Ralph simply said, “It seemed like the Christian thing to do.”

17

Student Groups InvigoratedThe CTS Student Association had an engaged and engaging year, orga-nizing so its members could better support each other, speaking out on diverse issues ranging from climate change to the rights of refugees, and planing events for the good of the seminary. For Black History Month, students created a one-day conference on putting faith into action, a perfor-mance entitled “My Soul Applauds at the Sound of Freedom,” a special Chapel service with preaching by Rev. Dr. William Barber II, and a book drive. The Affinity group, supporting LGBTQ students and allies, orga-nized marchers for the Indy Pride Parade and Pride Festival. CTS hosted Latinx Heritage Month activities with Rev. Dr. Miguel De La Torre. And, to care for fellow students, the Student Association office offered fresh coffee during the busiest days of the academic year.

By walking the talk, individuals model the words and lessons lived out by Jesus Christ during his ministry on Earth.

Dr. William C. Hine, retired Dean of the School of Continuing Education at Eastern Illinois University in Charleston, Illinois and a 1970 CTS MDiv graduate, wrapped up 12 years of serving as a CTS Trustee. He said, “Working with many excellent people on the Board and on the CTS faculty and staff has been a great pleasure. CTS has a great history and the future is indeed very bright with many exciting oppor-tunities on the horizon.”

Rev. Jeffrey L. Bower, a double alum who earned his MA in Church Music in 1997 and MDiv in 1999, was elected president of the CTS Alumni Board. He leads St. John’s Episcopal Church in Speedway, Indiana, and is learning Spanish to better serve the growing Latino population there. He is also a tireless volunteer with Freedom Indiana, which advocates for LGBTQ rights.

Trustee Liz Klimes hosted an alumni gathering honoring Dr. Joel C. Hunter, senior

pastor of North-land, A Church Distributed of Longwood, Fla., Dr. Hunter received an Honorary Doctor of Divinity from

CTS during Commencement weekend and preached at the Baccalaureate service.

CTS alum Rickey McCray’s church-planting ministry goes beyond congregational life to improving neighborhoods and creating work opportunities for youth. Rickey raised funds to pay teens to provide lawn mowing services to neighbors who did not have the physical or finan-cial resources to tend their lawns. The program is a win-win-win. At-risk youth are employed, neighbors’ properties are maintained, and community ties are strengthened. In 2016, Rickey was also named CTS Chapel Music Director.

CTS is grateful for people who engage with their fellow alumni or provide opportunities for alums to reconnect. From attending (and hosting!) alumni gatherings to institutional leadership and community advocacy, supporting alumni can take many forms.

Dr. Richard L. “Dick” Hamm, former General Minister and President of the Christian Church (Disciples of Christ) and a CTS Trustee and alum, and his wife Mindy hosted CTS grad-uates who had not been together in one place since the 1970s. Dick said, “It was wonderful to have these longtime friends in our home and to be in conver-sation about life, ministry and CTS. We remembered, reflected, laughed a lot and even cried together. One thing was abundantly clear: CTS has been a primary shaping force and resource in the lives and ministries of each of us!”

Lutheran House of StudyCTS is collaborating with the Indiana-Kentucky Synod of the Evangelical Lutheran Church in America and Christ the Savior Lutheran Church (in Fishers, Indiana) to create a Lutheran House of Study, which will meet the educational needs of church lay leaders, clergy who are continuing their education, and people training for ordained ministry. CTS will work directly with the IK Synod bishop to provide courses focused on key texts, from both Lutheran and non-Lutheran sources, to engage profound questions about faith and life. The House of Study was officially unveiled at the Synod’s 2016 Assembly, and the enthu-siasm for it has been very high. This partnership promises to strengthen Lutheran leadership for the 21st century.

Spiritual TrailHonoring the majestic beauty of the CTS campus hugging the White River, the Spiritual Trail connects to Indianapolis’ expanding trail systems and invites trail users to consider the webs of connection among people of various faith traditions.

CTS thanks the Allen White-hill Clowes Foundation for supporting phase one of the Spiritual Trail.

Vocations ProgramTo expand and amplify its impact, CTS will offer theological reflec-tion and conversations about “life meaning and purpose” to constituencies outside of the traditional graduate student model and in places on- and off- campus. By focusing on learning opportunities for people not enrolled in full-time courses, the Vocations Program will broaden our learning community and create more people who have experienced CTS.

In addition to the Annual Fund and other efforts, CTS focused on four core fundraising projects in the last year:

PhD in African American Preaching and Sacred RhetoricWhen CTS announced that it would offer the world’s first PhD dedicated to African Amer-ican Preaching and Sacred Rhetoric, more than 100 potential students immediately expressed interest in the program. Though the program can accommodate only about a dozen students in its first cohort in 2017, CTS recognizes that financial support is key to growing the PhD program. Dr. Frank Thomas, the driving force behind the new program, and members of the Seminary Advancement team are meeting with supporters nationwide to raise funds to support students and faculty devoted to the unique and indigenous American art form of African American preaching.

Loving God, we give you thanks for the gift of Christian Theological Seminary and all who have helped make it a vibrant place for fashioning transformative leaders for the church and world. As we strive to be faithful stewards of the mission and educational ministry bestowed upon us, we ask your blessings upon the work of our hands, the innovative thoughts within our minds, and the generosity that flows out of our hearts. Be with us now and always as we seek to embody that which you require of us: “to do justice, love mercy and walk humbly with you.” Amen.

(Micah 6:8)
