KEYS / REMOTE CONTROL

1 Radio frequency remote controllocking unit, ignition key, key fordoors, luggage compartment andfuel filler flap.

2 Ignition key, key for doors,luggage compartment and fuelfiller cap.

If there is a child (oranimal) in the car, neverleave it unattended withthe key in the ignition.

With the key in the ignition itwould be possible to operate therear electric window and there is arisk that the child may be seriouslyinjured (by trapping his or herneck, arm, hand, etc.).

1.03

RADIO FREQUENCY REMOTE CONTROL DOOR LOCKING

The plip remote control 1 locks andunlocks the doors.

It is supplied with power by abattery which must be replacedwhen the battery indicator light 2no longer illuminates. (Refer to theinformation on the plip remotecontrol batteries in section 5).

Locking/unlocking the doorsPress the remote control forapproximately one second to lock orunlock the doors. (Light 2 will lightup.)- The side repeaters and hazard

warning lights flash twice toindicate that the doors have beenlocked.

Note: If either a door or a luggagecompartment lid is open or notproperly closed, the hazardwarning lights will not flash.

- The hazard lights and siderepeaters flash once to indicateunlocking.

The range within which theremote control will operateThis varies according to theenvironment: therefore take carewhen handling the remote controlthat you do not inadvertently lockor unlock the doors.

Note: On certain vehicles, if a dooris not opened within approximately30 seconds of unlocking the doorusing the remote control, the doorswill lock again automatically.

InterferenceInterference may be caused to theoperation of the remote control byfactors in the immediate vicinity(external installations or the use ofequipment operating on the samefrequency as the remote control).

If you lose your keys or needanother set of keys (or a remotecontrol), contact your RenaultDealer.

• It will be necessary to take thevehicle to your Renault Dealer ifyou need to replace a keybecause both the vehicle and allthe keys are needed to initialisethe system.

• No more than four keys(including the remote controls)can be used on one vehicle.

If the plip remote control will notoperate:• Make sure that the batteries are

always in good condition - theylast for approximately two years.

• Check that the remote control iscorrectly synchronised.

In both cases refer to theinformation on the remote controlbatteries in section 5.

OPENING THE DOORS

Opening the doors from theoutsideFront: Use the key to unlock one ofthe front door locks 2. (Make surethat the key is inserted as far as itwill go into the lock.) Place yourhand behind handle 1 and pull ittowards you.

Rear: Place your hand behindhandle 1 and pull it towards you.

Opening the doors manuallyfrom inside the carMove handle 3.

“Lights on” warning buzzerA warning buzzer will sound whena front door is opened if you haveleft the lights switched on afterswitching off the ignition (toprevent discharge of the battery).

Childproof locksThese make it impossible for therear doors to be opened from theinside. Move lever 4 on each doorand check from the inside that bothdoors are securely locked.

LOCKING/UNLOCKING THE DOORS

Manual lockingIf outside, use the key.

Electric central lockingThis enables all four doors, theluggage compartment and fuelflap to be locked or unlockedsimultaneously.

Press the red spot on switch 1 tolock the doors.

The front door mechanism cannotbe locked if the front door is open.

Operating incidentIn the event of an electrical failure,the doors can be locked manually.

Front: Using the key.

Rear: With the door open, turn thescrew 2 (using a tool such as a flatscrewdriver) and close the dooragain. The door will then be lockedfrom the outside.

It will only be possible to open thedoor from the inside.

LOCKING/UNLOCKING THE DOORS (continued)

Door status indicator light 3The switch indicator light 3 showsthe closure status of the doors:- when the doors are locked,

indicator light 3 is on;- when a door is opened (or not

properly closed), indicator light 3is off.

When you lock the doors byremote control, indicator light 3stays on for approximately oneminute before switching off.

If one of the four doors is open,indicator light 5 switches on andthe four doors in picture 4 are openon display A.

If you decide to keep thedoors locked when you aredriving, remember that itmay be more difficult for

those assisting you to gain access toyour vehicle in the event of anemergency.

AUTOMATIC LOCKING OF DOORS, ETC. WHEN DRIVINGYou can decide if you wish toactivate the function.

To activate itWith the ignition on, press thelocking side (red dot) of the doorcentral locking button 1 forapproximately 5 seconds until youhear a beep.

To deactivate itWith the ignition on, press theunlocking side (opposite the reddot) of the door central lockingbutton 1 for approximately 5seconds until you hear a beep.

If you decide to keep thedoors locked when youare driving, rememberthat it may be more

difficult for those assisting youto gain access to your vehicle inthe event of an emergency.

Operating principleWhen the vehicle moves off, thesystem automatically locks thedoors, etc. as soon as a speed of4 mph (6 km/h) is attained.

Unlocking occurs automatically:- if a front door is opened.

Note: If a rear door is opened, thiswill be locked again automaticallywhen the vehicle attains a speed ofapproximately 4 mph (6 km/h).

- by pressing the door unlockingbutton 1.

Operating incidentIf you note that the system is notoperating correctly (automaticlocking does not take place, theindicator light 2 does not illuminatewhen the doors, etc. are locked),first of all check that all the doors,etc. are properly closed. However, ifthey are closed correctly, consultyour Renault Dealer.

1.09

ENGINE IMMOBILISERThis prevents the vehicle beingdriven by anyone not in possessionof the vehicle’s coded ignition key.

Any work or modificationto the engine immobiliser(computer, wiring, etc.)may be dangerous. It must

be carried out by trained Renaultnetwork personnel.

Operating principleThe vehicle is automaticallyprotected a few seconds after takingthe key out of the ignition.

When the ignition is switched on,indicator light 1 illuminatessteadily for a few seconds and thenextinguishes.

The vehicle has recognised the codeand the engine can be started.

If the vehicle does not recognise thecode of the ignition key, indicatorlight 1 flashes continuously and theengine cannot be started.

A few seconds after the ignitionhas been switched off, indicatorlight 1 will flash continuously.

The vehicle will not be protecteduntil the key has been taken out ofthe ignition.

• Indicator light to indicate theengine immobiliser is operatingWhen the ignition has beenswitched on, indicator light 1illuminates steadily for a fewseconds and then extinguishes.You can then start the engine.

• Warning light to indicate that thesystem is not operating correctlyAfter the ignition has beenswitched on, if indicator light 1continues to flash or remainsilluminated steadily, thisindicates that the system is notoperating correctly.

If indicator light 2 flashes duringa journey when the vehicle isslowing down or at idling speed,it indicates that the system is notoperating correctly.

In all cases, it is essential to consulta Renault Dealer as only he isqualified to repair the engineimmobiliser.

If your coded ignition key is faulty,use the second key (given to youwhen the vehicle is delivered). Ifyou do not have access to this, it isessential to call a Renault Dealerbecause it is only dealers in theRenault network who are qualifiedto repair the engine immobiliser.

HEAD RESTRAINTS

To adjust the heightPull the head restraint forwards Aand slide it up or down at the sametime B.

To remove the head restraintRaise the head restraint until it is atthe highest possible setting. Lift uptab 1 and then pull the headrestraint upwards until it isreleased.

To adjust the angle of the headrestraintOn certain vehicles the angle of thehead restraint can be adjusted. Todo this, move the front section A ofthe head restraint forwards orbackwards until it feelscomfortable.

To refit the head restraintInsert the rods into the sleeves withthe notches facing the front.

Lower the head restraint until itlocks in position.

The head restraint isimportant for safety:ensure that it ispositioned correctly.

The distance between your headand the head restraint should beas small as possible, and the topof the head restraint should be asclose as possible to the top ofyour head.

REAR HEAD RESTRAINTS

Side C and centre D headrestraintsTo adjust the height:Simply slide it up.

To remove it:Press tab 1 on head restraint guides.

To refit the head restraint:Insert the rods into the sleeves, withthe notches facing the front, andlower the head restraint to thedesired height.

Stowing position of centre headrestraintPress the tabs 2 on the head restraintguides and lower the head restraintcompletely.

When the head restraint has beenlowered as far as it can go, it iscalled the stowing position: thehead restraint must not be in thisposition if the seat is occupied by apassenger.

The head restraint isimportant for safety. Ensurethat it is in place and in thecorrect position. The

distance between your head andthe head restraint should be assmall as possible. The top of yourhead should be in line with the topof the head restraint.

FRONT SEATS

To move forwards or backwards:Lift lever 1 to unlock the seat.Release the lever in the requiredposition and ensure that the seat islocked in place.

To raise or lower the seatMove lever 2.

To incline the seatback:Turn tumblewheel 4 and tilt theseatback to the desired position.

To adjust the lumbar support of thedriver’s seatTurn tumblewheel 3.

FRONT SEATS

Central armrestYou can set the height to one ofthree different positions by raisingit slightly:

Raised position AUsed to access the adjustmentstalk 4.

The raised position A isused to attach the seatbelt (access to thecasing 5).

We would advise you not torecline the seatbacksexcessively to ensure thatthe effectiveness of the seat

belts is not reduced.

Make sure the seatback is locked inplace correctly.

Nothing should be placed on thefloor (area in front of driver) assuch objects may slide under thepedal during braking manoeuvres,thus obstructing its use.

For safety reasons, onlyadjust the seats when thevehicle is stationary.

HEATED SEATS

With the ignition on, press switch 1.A indicator light will illuminate onthe instrument panel.

If the indicator light is illuminated,the system is not necessarilyactivated. The system has athermostat and only operates whenthe passenger compartmenttemperature is less than 12°C (witha tolerance of plus or minus 4°C).

STEERING WHEEL

On certain vehicles, the position ofthe steering wheel is adjustable.

AdjustmentLift lever 1 and put the steeringwheel in the required position;lower the lever to lock the steeringwheel in place.

For safety reasons, onlyadjust the steering wheelwhen the vehicle isstationary.

When power assisted steering isfitted, never leave the steeringwheel on full lock when thevehicle is parked as this maydamage the pump.

Never switch off the ignition whentravelling downhill, and avoiddoing so when driving in general(power steering and brake servowill not function).

SEAT BELTSAlways wear your seat belt whentravelling in your car. You must alsocomply with the local legislation inthe particular country you are in.

Before driving off:- First ensure that your driving

position is correct.- Then adjust your seat belt to

provide maximum protection.

Incorrectly adjusted seatbelts may cause injuriesin the event of anaccident.

Even pregnant women shouldwear a seat belt. In this case,ensure that the pressure of thelap belt on the abdomen is notexcessive.

Adjusting your driving position• Sit with your back firmly against

the seatback. This is essential toensure that your lumbar vertebraeare in the correct position.

• Adjust the distance between theseat and the pedals. Your seatshould be as far back as possiblefor you to be able to press in theclutch pedal fully. The seatbackshould be adjusted so that yourarms are slightly bent when youhold the steering wheel.

• Adjust the position of your headrestraint. For maximum safetyyour head should be as near aspossible to the head restraint.

• Adjust the height of the seat. Thisadjustment allows you to selectthe seat position which offers youthe best possible vision.

• Adjust the position of the steeringwheel.

Adjusting the seat beltsSit with your back firmly against theseatback.

The shoulder strap 1 should be asclose to the base of the neck aspossible but not on it.

The lap strap 2 should be heldfirmly over the thighs and againstthe pelvis.

The belt should be worn so that it isas close to the body as possible, i.e.avoid wearing heavy clothing orhaving bulky objects under thebelts.

Adjusting the front seat beltshoulder strap heightPress button 3 to select the positionyou require so that the shoulderstrap 1 is worn as described above.

When the belt has been adjusted,make sure it is locked in positioncorrectly.

To fastenUnwind the belt slowly andsmoothly and ensure the buckle 4locks into the catch 6 (check it islocked by pulling on the buckle 4).If the belt jams, allow it to returnslightly before attempting tounwind it again.

To fasten (continued)If your belt becomes completelyjammed:- Pull the belt slowly but firmly so

that just over an inch (3 cm)unwinds.

- Then allow the belt to rewindautomatically.

- Unwind it again.- If the problem persists, consult

your Renault Dealer.

To releasePress button 5 on the catch 6 and theseat belt will be returned by theinertia reel.

Hold the buckle to help theoperation.

REAR SEAT BELTS EXCEPT FOR ESTATE VERSIONSRear side seat beltsThe belts are fastened, released andadjusted in the same way as thefront belts.

Rear centre beltDepending on version, releasebuckle 1 from its housing A.

Unwind belt 3 slowly until theblack buckle 2 locks into the blackcatch 5.

For hatchback versions: it isessential to route the belt in theguide 4 as shown in the photosabove.

Insert the last sliding buckle 1 intocatch 6.

To fold back the rear seatback,release the black buckle 2 byunlocking the red catch 6.

For hatchback versions: Release thebelt from guide 4. Replace buckle 1at position A.

Special note for vehicles with splitfolding rear bench seatsIf you have to fold down the sectionbehind the front left-hand seat:• Remove the head restraint.• Lift the seat cushion against the

front left-hand seat.• Release catch 6 from its

housing 7.

• Lower seatback 8 while holdingcatch 6 so that it remains visiblewhen the seatback is folded down(as shown above).

Note: The label will remind you ofthese instructions.

The belt is then fastened asdescribed on the previous page.

REAR CENTRE BELTS ON ESTATE VERSIONS

Unwind the belt slowly from itshousing 1.

Insert black buckle 2 until it locksinto black catch 3.

Insert the last sliding buckle 4 untilit locks into red catch 5.


1.22

SEAT BELTSThe following information applies to both the vehicle’s front and rear seat belts:

• No modifications may be made to the component parts of the restraint system (belts and seats and theirmountings) fitted originally.

For special applications (e.g. fitting child seats) consult your Renault Dealer.

• Do not use any devices which give any play in the belts (clothes pegs, clips, for example). A seat belt that is worn tooloosely may cause injuries in the event of an accident.

• Never wear the shoulder strap under your arm or behind your back.

• Do not use the same belt for more than one person and never hold a baby or child on your knees with your seat beltaround them.

• The belt should never be twisted.

• Following a serious accident the seat belts in use at the time must be replaced. Likewise, have your seat belts replacedas soon as they show any signs of wear.

• When refitting the rear bench seat, take care that the seat belts are correctly positioned so that they can be usedproperly.

• If necessary, re-adjust the position and tension of the belt.

METHODS OF RESTRAINT IN ADDITION TO THE FRONT AND REAR SIDE SEAT BELTSThese are:

Seat belt pretensioners.

Force limiter.

Air bags for driver and frontpassenger.

These systems are provided to actindependently or together when thevehicle is subjected to a frontalimpact.

There are three possibilities,depending on the force of theimpact:- Protection is provided by the belt

only;- The pretensioner is triggered to

rectify belt position and take upplay in the belt;

- Always wear your seat belt whentravelling in your car.

Side air bagsProvided to operate in the eventof a violent side impact.

Seat belt pretensionersThis system is only operationalwhen the ignition is switched on.

If the vehicle is subject to a severefrontal impact, piston 1immediately retracts the seat beltbuckle pulling the seat belt tightagainst the body and therebyimproving its efficiency.

• Following an accident,have all the restraintsystems checked.

• No operations whatsoever arepermitted on any part of thepretensioner system (computer,wiring).

• To avoid accidental triggering ofthe system which may causedamage, only qualifiedpersonnel of the RenaultNetwork may work on thepretensioner system.

• Electrical testing of the triggersystem may only be carried outby a specially trained technicianusing special equipment.

• When the vehicle is scrapped,contact your Renault Dealer fordisposal of the gas generator.

Force limiterAbove a certain severity of impact,this mechanism is used to limit theforce of the belt against the body sothat it is at an acceptable level.

Warning relating to theservice life of air bagsand pretensioners

The pyrotechnic systems in airbags and pretensioners have alimited service life. Thesesystems must be replaced eachtime they are activated but at thelatest after they have been inservice for ten years.The workmust be undertaken by a RenaultDealer.

The seat belt pretensioners andthe air bag operate together. Ifone of the systems has passed thedate when it is due for renewal, itwill alter the overall safetyprotection provided.

Airbags for driver and frontpassengerAn air bag may be provided for boththe driver and the front passenger.

"Air bag" inscriptions on thesteering wheel and dashboardtogether with a label on the sunvisor on the passenger side indicatethat the vehicle is equipped with airbags.

Airbags for driver and frontpassenger (continued)Each air bag system consists of:- An air bag and gas generator fitted

on the steering wheel for thedriver and in the dashboard for thefront passenger.

- A computer for both systems,which includes the impactdetector and a monitor controllingthe electrical trigger system for thegas generator.

- One single indicator light on theinstrument panel 1.

OperationThe system is only operational afterthe ignition has been turned on(ignition key in position M “ignitionon”).

If a severe frontal impact occurs, theair bag(s) inflate(s) in approximately30 millisecond(s), cushioning theimpact of the driver’s head againstthe steering wheel and the frontpassenger’s head against thedashboard. The air bag then deflatesimmediately so that the passengersare not impeded in any way whenthey get out of the vehicle.

The air bag system uses theprinciples of pyrotechnics. Thisexplains why, when the air baginflates, it will generate heat,produce smoke (this does not meanthat a fire is about to start) and makea noise upon detonation. In asituation where an air bag isrequired, it must inflateimmediately and this may causesome minor, superficial grazing tothe skin.

Operating incidentsTell-tale light 1 illuminates on theinstrument panel when the ignitionis turned on and then extinguishesafter a few seconds.

If it does not illuminate when theignition is turned on or if it flashes,there is a fault in the system.

Consult your Renault Dealer as soonas possible. Your protection will bereduced until this problem isrectified.

METHODS OF RESTRAINT IN ADDITION TO THE FRONT AND REAR SIDE SEAT BELTS (continued)All the warnings given below are designed to ensure that the air bag can inflate correctly and to prevent serious injuriescaused by items which may be dislodged when the air bag inflates.

The airbag is designed to complement the action of the seat belt. The air bags and seat belts are integral parts ofthe same protection system. It is therefore essential that the seat belt is worn at all times. If seat belts are notworn, it exposes the occupants to the risk of serious injury in the event of an accident. It may also increase therisk of minor superficial injuries occurring when the air bag is deployed, although such minor injuries are

always possible with air bags.

The air bag does not offer protection against minor and moderately serious frontal impacts, side or rear impacts or if thevehicle turns over.

Air bags for driver and passenger• No work or modification whatsoever may be performed on the entire driver and passenger air bag system (computer,

wiring, etc.) except by qualified Renault network personnel.

• To ensure that the system is in good working order and to avoid incorrect triggering of the system which may causeinjury, only qualified Renault Network personnel may work on the air bag system.

• As a safety precaution, have the air bag system checked if your vehicle has been involved in an accident, is stolen orbroken into.

• When selling or lending the vehicle, inform the user of these points and hand over this handbook with the vehicle.

• When scrapping your vehicle, contact your Renault Dealer for disposal of the gas generator(s).

All the warnings given below aredesigned to ensure that the air bagcan inflate correctly and to preventserious injuries caused by itemswhich may be dislodged when theair bag inflates.

Warnings concerning the driver’s air bag• Do not modify either the steering wheel or the steering wheel boss.

• Do not cover the steering wheel boss.

• Do not attach any objects (pin, logo, clock, telephone support, etc.) to thesteering wheel boss.

• The steering wheel must not be removed (except by qualified personnelwithin the Renault network).

• Do not sit too close to the steering wheel. If you sit with your arms slightlybent (see information on “Adjusting your driving position” in section 1), itwill ensure that there is sufficient space for the air bag to inflate properlyand to be fully effective.

Warnings concerning the passenger air bag: location 1• Do not attach or affix with adhesive any objects (pin, logo, clock, telephone

support, etc.) on the dashboard near where the air bag is located.

• Do not place anything between the dashboard and the passenger (animal,umbrella, walking stick, parcels, etc.).

• The passenger must not put his or her feet on the dashboard as there is arisk that serious injuries may be sustained. As a general rule, keep all partsof the body (knees, hands, heads, etc.) well away from the dashboard.

A REAR-FACING CHILD/BABY SEAT MUST NOT BE FITTEDTO THE FRONT PASSENGER SEAT

Side air bagsThis air bag may be fitted to thefront seats and is activated at thesides of the seat (door side) toprotect the occupants in the event ofa severe side impact.

The markings 1 on the windscreenwill remind you of the presence ofthis equipment.

This system will only operate if asevere side impact occurs.

Warnings concerning the side air bag• Fitting seat covers: Seats equipped with an air bag require special

covers specifically designed for your vehicle. Consult your RenaultDealer to find out if these covers may be purchased from Renault

outlets. The use of any covers other than those designed for your vehicle(and including those designed for another vehicle) may affect theoperation of these air bags and reduce your protection.

• Do not place any accessories, objects or even an animal between theseatback and the door. This may prevent the air bag from operatingcorrectly or cause injury if the air bag is deployed.

• No work or modification whatsoever may be performed on the seat exceptby qualified Renault network personnel.

CHILD SAFETYIn all countries there are regulationsgoverning the use of restraints forchildren and babies.

In Europe, children under 12 yearsof age or a height of less than1.50 m(1) (4 ft 11 inches) must travelin an approved seat that is suitablefor the height and weight of thechild.

The driver is responsible forensuring that this equipment isused correctly.

Remember that a collision at30 mph (50 km/h) is the same asfalling a distance of 10 metres.Expressed in other terms,transporting a child without arestraint is the equivalent ofallowing him or her to play on athird-floor balcony which doesnot have any railings.

(1) Always comply with the laws of thecountry in which you are travelling.They may be different to theguidelines in this handbook.

Under no circumstancesshould babies or childrenbe allowed to travel sittingon the knees of another

passenger in the vehicle.

If a head-on collision occurs at30 mph (50 km/h) a child weighing30 kg (66 lbs) will be transformedinto a missile equivalent to onetonne: you will find it impossibleto hold the child, even if youyourself are wearing a belt.

It is particularly dangerous to putthe belt round your child when heor she is sitting on your knee.Never use the same belt for morethan one person at the same time.

Child restraints for which typeapproval was obtained after 1992provide a level of security greaterthan for restraints with typeapproval before that date.

It is therefore advisable to select achild restraint that complies withEuropean regulation ECE 44.

Restraints that comply with thislegislation must be marked with anorange label bearing the letter Efollowed by a number (whichstands for the country where it istype approved) and the year thetype approval was granted.

The standard classifies therestraints in five categories:Category 0 : from 0 to 10 kg

(0 to 22 lbs)Category 0+: from 0 to 13 kg

The right choiceThe safety of your children is alsoyour responsibility.

To ensure that your child has themaximum possible protection, werecommend that you use seatsobtained from a Renault Dealer.

If your vehicle is fitted with anIsofix system you should use anIsofix seat (see section 1, paragraph"Isofix child seat attachmentsystem").

Restraint systems for all thecategories are available. Thesesystems have been developed inconsultation with themanufacturers and have been testedin Renault vehicles.

Consult your Renault Dealer andask him to help you install it.

Category O and O+A child’s neck is very susceptible toinjury up to the age of two. In afront-facing seat there is a risk that achild will sustain neck injuries inthe event of a frontal collision.Renault therefore recommends arear-facing seat with a harness thatgives all-round protection (figure 1).

Category 1Between the ages of 2 and 4, achild’s pelvis is not fully developed.Restraints using three-point beltsare not adequate and there is a riskthat the child will sustainabdominal injuries in the event of afrontal collision. It is thereforeadvisable to use rear-facing seats(figure 1), bucket type seats (figure2) or seats with harnesses.

To avoid any risk to your safety, we recommend that you useRENAULT approved accessories because they are suitable for yourcar and are the only accessories for which RENAULT will provide awarranty.

Category 2 (15 to 25 kg) (33 to55 lbs)The type of restraint most suitablefor the pelvis of a child agedbetween 4 and 7 is one that can becombined with a three-point seatbelt. This is a booster seat (figure 3)with belt guides to ensure that thebelt will be worn flat over the thighsof the child.

A booster seat with aheight-adjustable seatback and abelt guide is recommended as thiswill allow the belt to be worn asclose to the base of the neck aspossible but not on it. A bucket-typeseat (figure 4) must be used forvehicles where the rear centre seatis equipped with a two-point belt.

Category 3For children aged over 7, a boosterseat with belt guides isrecommended to ensure that thevehicle's three-point seat belt willbe worn flat over the child’s thighs.

A booster seat with aheight-adjustable seatback and abelt guide is recommended as thiswill allow the belt to be worn asclose to the base of the neck aspossible but not on it.

If a booster seat without a seatbackis used (figure 3), the vehicle’s headrestraint will have to be adjusted tosuit the child’s stature; the upperedge of the head restraint must be atthe same height as the top of thechild’s head and should never belower than in line with the child’seyes.

DANGERA rear-facing child seat must not be fitted to the front passenger seatif the vehicle is fitted with a passenger air bag. The child may suffervery serious injuries if the air bag inflates.

CHILD SAFETY• No modifications may be made to the component parts of the restraint system (belts and seats and their

mountings) fitted originally.

• The fitting instructions provided by the manufacturer of the restraint system should be followed carefully.

• Avoid wearing bulky clothing and do not place any objects between the child and the restraint system.

• The seat belt on the vehicle must be taut so that the child’s seat is held in position securely. Check the tensionregularly.

• Never wear the belt under the arm or behind the back.

• The harness or belt should be taut and fitted to suit the child’s stature.

• Never allow your child to stand or kneel on the seat when the vehicle is moving.

• Check that the child is in the correct position for the entire journey, particularly when he or she is asleep.

• Use the seat belts to hold the seat in position, even if it is not occupied. Otherwise, if an accident occurs, it maybecome dislodged and pose a risk to other vehicle occupants.

• Following a serious accident, have an inspection made of the seat belts and restraint systems fitted at the time.

• Never leave a child unsupervised in a vehicle, even if he or she is in a child seat.

• Activate the rear door locks (if your vehicle is equipped with these).

• Make sure the child does not get out of the vehicle at the side where there is traffic.

• Set your children a good example - always wear your seat belt.

Isofix - mounting system forchild seatsThis is a new procedure forinstalling a child seat. It can be usedon the rear side seat positions of thevehicle.

It consists of the followingcomponents:• Two anchoring rings per seat

located between the seat theseatback;

• A special Renault child seat fittedwith two catches which hookonto the two rings.

Only the specific Renault seat istype approved for this vehicle.Please contact your Renault Dealerto purchase this seat.

This seat is used as a rear-facingseat for children up to the age ofapproximately 18 months and thenas a front-facing seat up to the ageof four. It is equipped with tworetractable catches which can besecured with the Isofixattachments provided for Renaultvehicles. It can also be fitted“conventionally” in other vehicles(without catches) using athree-point seat belt.

• Make sure that there isnothing obstructing theseat mounting mechanismat the anchorage points

(gravel, cloths, toys, etc.).

• Always remember to fasten theseat belts on child seats for alljourneys.

Fitting a child seat• Before fitting and using the seat,

read the instructions providedcarefully.

• Hold the seat in position so thatthe catches on the seat areopposite the two rings 2 fitted tothe rear centre seat of the vehicle.(If the seat is fitted withinstallation guides 1, slide eachguide around the anchoringring 2).

• Latch the hooks onto the ringsand make sure it is locked inplace properly by moving itforwards and backwards and fromright to left.

• Push on the base of the seat firmlyto bring it into contact with theseatback and make sure it issecurely in position.

Therefore, if the average fuelconsumption decreases, the rangewill increase.

• You may also notice that theaverage fuel consumptionincreases when the vehicle isstationary and the engine idling.This is normal since the moduletakes account of fuel used duringidling.

RUNNING IN IGNITION SWITCHPetrol version

For the first 625 miles (1000 km) donot exceed 70 mph (130 km/h)in the highest gear or 3000 to3500 rpm.

On completion of 625 miles(1000 km) you may use your carnormally. However, it is only after1500 miles (3000 km) have beencovered that you may reasonablyexpect full performance.

Service intervals: Refer to yourservicing booklet for details aboutservice intervals.

Diesel versionFor the first 750 miles (1500 km),do not exceed 2500 rpm. Oncompletion of this mileage you maydrive faster, however, the car willonly provide top performanceafter approximately 4000 miles(6000 km).

During the running in period, donot accelerate hard while the engineis still cold and do not let the enginerev in the lower gears.

Service intervals: Refer to yourservicing booklet for details aboutservice intervals.

“Stop” position (St) and anti-theftlock appliedTo lock: remove the key and turnsteering wheel slightly until thelatch engages in the steeringcolumn.

To unlock: turn key and steeringwheel slightly.

“Auxiliaries” position AThe ignition is switched off. Anyauxiliaries fitted will still have acurrent supply (example: radio).

2.03

STARTING/STOPPING THE ENGINEStarting the engineIn the case of an automatic gearboxRefer to the information onautomatic gearboxes in section 2.

Special feature on vehiclesequipped with an engineimmobiliser systemIn very cold conditions(temperatures below –20°C): so thatit is easier to start the engine, switchon the ignition for several secondsbefore starting the engine.

Make sure the engine immobiliser isnot activated (see section 1 on theengine immobiliser).

Petrol injectionEngine hot or coldTurn the key to the “start” positionwithout accelerating.

Release the key as soon as theengine starts.

Let the engine run in neutralwithout overrevving for severalseconds.

Stopping the engineWith the engine idling, turn the keyback to the “Stop” position.

If there is a child (or animal) in the vehicle, never leave it unattended with the key in the ignition.With the key in the ignition he or she could start up the engine or operate electrical equipment such as theelectric windows and there is a risk that the child may be injured (by trapping his or her neck, arm, hand, etc.).Risk of serious injury.

Never switch off the ignition before the vehicle has stopped completely. Once the engine has stopped, the powersteering, brake servo and the passive safety devices such as airbags and pretensioners will no longer operate.When the key has been removed the steering will lock.


2.04

SPECIAL POINTS RELATING TO PETROL VERSIONSThe following operating conditionsmay cause the catalytic converter tooverheat and thus reduce itsefficiency or even destroy it andcause heat damage to the vehicle:

• Driving for a long time with thelow fuel level warning lightilluminated;

• Faulty ignition, running out offuel or spark plug disconnectedoccurring as engine misfiring andsnatches when driving;

• Using leaded petrol;

• Using lubrication additives orfuel which is not approved byRenault;

• Loss of power;

• The fitting of non-recognisedsecurity systems which have beenintegrated into the fuel injectionsystem for immobilisationpurposes;

• Bump starting the vehicle, asunburnt petrol in the system mayaffect the catalyst if the car doesnot start quickly. However, jumpstarting with jump leads acrossthe battery is permissible;

If you note any of the aboveincidents, have the necessaryrepairs carried out as soon aspossible by your Renault Dealer.

These incidents may be avoided bytaking your vehicle regularly toyour Renault Dealer at the intervalsspecified in your servicing booklet.

Starting problemsTo avoid damaging the catalyticconverter, do not keep trying tostart the engine (using the ignitionkey, or by pushing or pulling thevehicle) without having identifiedand corrected the starting fault.

If the fault cannot be identified, donot persist in attempting to start theengine. Call a Renault Dealer.

Do not park the vehicleor run the enginein locations wherecombustible substances or

materials such as grass or leavescan come into contact with a hotexhaust system.


2.05

SPECIAL POINTS RELATING TO DIESEL VERSIONSDiesel engine speedDiesel engines are fitted with aninjection pump incorporating amechanical governor whichprevents overrevving of the engineirrespective of the gear in use.

Lack of fuelIf the fuel tank has been draineddry, you may start the enginenormally after refilling the fuel tankprovided that the battery iswell-charged. Refer to theinformation on the fuel tank insection 1 for the special instructionson diesel versions equipped withthe common rail (high pressure)engine.

However, if after a few seconds andseveral attempts the engine fails tostart, contact a Renault Dealer.

Precautions to be taken in winterTo avoid any problems in icyweather:• Ensure the battery is always fully

charged.• Always keep the fuel tank

relatively full to avoid watervapour condensing in it andaccumulating at the bottom of thetank.

Vehicles with diesel fuel heaterThis equipment enables diesel fuelto be used without an additivedown to –18°C or, if the vehicle isused regularly for short journeys(cold engine), down to –5°C.

2.06

GEAR LEVER HANDBRAKE POWER STEERING

To select reverse(vehicle stationary)Move the lever to neutral, thenposition the lever in reverse.

Ring 1 has to be lifted up to the gearlever knob to select reverse gear.

The reversing lights will illuminateas soon as reverse gear is selected(ignition on).

To release:Pull the lever up slightly, pressbutton 2 and then lower the lever tothe floor.

The red warning light on theinstrument panel will illuminate ifyou are driving with an incorrectlyreleased handbrake.

To apply:Pull the lever up.

The lever should travel about10 notches to hold the car. Yourvehicle is fitted with self-adjustingrear brake shoes and the handbrakeshould only be adjusted during abrake overhaul.

When the vehicle isstationary, make surethat the handbrake isproperly applied so that

the vehicle does not moveunintentionally.

Make sure the handbrake isproperly released when driving,otherwise overheating mayoccur.

When power assisted steering isfitted, never leave the steeringwheel on full lock when the vehicleis parked as this may damage thepump.

Never switch off theignition when travellingdownhill, and avoiddoing so when driving in

general (power steering andbrake servo will not function).


2.07

ADVICE ON ANTI-POLLUTION AND HOW TO ECONOMISE ON FUEL, DRIVINGRENAULT is actively participatingin the reduction of pollutantexhaust gas emissions and in savingenergy.By virtue of its design, moderatefuel consumption and initialsettings your Renault conforms tocurrent anti-pollution standards.Technical design, however, cannotachieve all. The fuel consumptionof your car and the level of pollutantexhaust gas emissions are verymuch within your control. Makesure that your vehicle is maintainedcorrectly, use it carefully and watchyour driving style.

MaintenanceIt should be noted that failure torespect anti-pollution standardsmay lead to legal action being takenagainst the vehicle owner. Inaddition, the replacement of parts ofthe engine, fuel supply system andexhaust by parts other than thoseoriginally recommended by themanufacturer may alter yourvehicle such that it no longercomplies with anti-pollutionstandards.

Have your vehicle checked andadjusted by your Renault Dealer inaccordance with the instructions inthe vehicle’s servicing booklet.

Your Renault Dealer has all theequipment necessary for ensuringyour vehicle is maintained in itsoriginal standard.

Always remember that the emissionof pollutant fumes is directly linkedto fuel consumption.

Engine adjustments• Ignition: This does not require

adjustment.

• Spark plugs: Optimumconditions of use, performanceand output demand that thespecifications laid down by ourdesign office be rigorouslyadhered to.

If the spark plugs have to bechanged, use the make, type andgap specified for your vehicle’sengine. Consult your RenaultDealer for this information.

• Idling speed: This does notrequire adjustment.

• Air filter, diesel filter: A chokedelement hinders output and mustbe changed.

• Injection pump setting: It must beset to the recommended values.

Monitoring exhaust gasThe exhaust gas monitoring systemwill detect any malfunctioning ofthe vehicle’s exhaust gasdepollution system.

If this system malfunctions, toxicsubstances may be released into theatmosphere or mechanical damagemay occur.

This warning light on theinstrument panel willindicate if there are any

problems with the system.

It illuminates when the ignition isswitched on and extinguisheswithin 3 seconds.

- If it illuminates continuously,consult your Renault Dealer assoon as possible.

- If it flashes, reduce the enginespeed until the light stopsflashing. Consult your RenaultDealer as soon as possible.

Driving• Drive carefully for the first few

miles until the engine reaches itsnormal operating temperature.

• Speed is expensive.

• “Snappy” driving uses a lot offuel: drive with a “light rightfoot”.

• Take your foot off the acceleratorpedal to slow down rather thanuse the brakes wastefully andjudge the road well in advance.

• Avoid fierce acceleration.

• Do not overrev the engine in theintermediate gears.

Always use the highest ratiopossible without labouring theengine.

On versions with an automatictransmission, it is preferable tokeep your the gear lever in D.

• Do not try to maintain the samespeed up a hill; accelerate nomore than you would on the level.Keep your foot in the sameposition on the accelerator pedal.

• Double declutching andaccelerating before switching offare superfluous actions inmodern cars.

• Bad weather, flooded roadsDo not drive throughfloods if the depth ofwater is above the loweredge of the wheel rims.

General hints• Electricity is “fuel”; switch off all

the electrical units which are notreally needed.

However, (with safety always inmind), keep your lights on whenthe visibility is bad (see and beseen).

• Try to use the air vents. Drivingwith the windows open willincrease the use of fuel by 4%.

• For vehicles with airconditioning, the extra fuelconsumed in urban cycle can beas high as 2 litres per 100 km:switch the system off when it isnot needed.

• Never fill the fuel tank right to thebrim as this is wasteful.

• Do not leave an empty roof rack inposition.

• It is better to fit a trailer for bulkyobjects.

• When towing a caravan, fit a winddeflector and adjust it carefully.

• Avoid using the car fordoor-to-door calls (short journeyswith long waits in between)because the engine never reachesits normal operating temperature.Try to group your calls.

Tyres• Inflation pressures which are

too low may increase fuelconsumption.

• The use of non-recommendedtyres may also increase fuelconsumption.


2.10

ENVIRONMENTYour vehicle has been designedwith the aim of caring for theenvironment.

• The majority of versions areequipped with a depollutionsystem including a catalyticconverter, a lambda sensor andan active carbon filter. (Theactive carbon filter preventsvapour from the petrol tank beingreleased into the open air.)

These vehicles operate withunleaded fuel only.

• The majority of components inyour vehicle can be recycled andyour vehicle already containsrecycled materials.

• 95% of the plastic components inyour vehicle are marked with asymbol which allows theprinciple component material tobe identified. These markingsmean that parts removed can besorted more easily, thusoptimising the recycling of eachof them.

In addition to this, your vehiclemeets the requirements laid downin European legislation relating toenvironmental protection.

Make your contribution towardsprotection of the environment too!Do not dispose of parts replaced inthe course of routine vehiclemaintenance (battery, oil filter, airfilter, etc.) and oil containers (emptyor full of used oil, etc.) withhousehold waste.

Dispose of it through specialistorganisations. In all cases, complywith local legislation.

TYRE PRESSURE MONITORThis system continuously monitorsthe tyre pressures.

Tyre pressures should be adjustedwhen the tyres are coldIf tyre pressures cannot be checkedwhen the tyres are cold, assume anincrease of 0.2 to 0.3 bar.

Never deflate a hot tyre.

This function is anadditional driving aid.

However, the functiondoes not take the place of thedriver. It cannot, therefore, underany circumstances replace thevigilance or the responsibility ofthe driver.

Check the tyre pressures,including the emergency sparewheel, once a month.

Operating principleEach wheel (except the emergencyspare wheel) has a sensor integratedin the inflation valve whichperiodically measures the tyrepressure.

The driver is constantly informed ofthe correct tyre pressures andpossible variations on display Aand the instrument panel B.

Spare wheelThe emergency spare wheel doesnot have a sensor and so cannot bedetected by the system.

ANTI-LOCK BRAKING SYSTEM (ABS)When braking sharply, the twoessential aims are to reduce thestopping distance and keep yourvehicle under control. However,there is a risk that road holding anddirectional control may be lost andthe wheels may lock when braking,depending on the nature of theground, weather conditions andyour reactions. The anti-lockbraking system (ABS) has beendesigned to combat this danger.

The safety enhancement is that thebrake control system prevents thewheels from locking, even if thebrakes are applied too sharply, andallows the vehicle to be steered andthus its direction to be controlled.Under these circumstances it isquite possible for the driver to steerthe vehicle and to avoid an obstaclewhilst at the same time applying thebrakes.

Also, this system allows you tooptimise stopping distances whenthe adhesion of one or more wheelsbecomes hazardous (wet roads,slippery or varying road surfaces).

Although this system allows you tomake maximum use of stoppingdistances, even with the ABS youstill have to take account of theactual condition of the road surface.It is still essential to follow the rulesof good driving practice (such asdriving at a safe distance to thevehicle in front). The fact that thevehicle’s safety has been increasedshould not encourage you to takerisks.

When the system has beenactivated, you will feel a certaindegree of pulsation at the brakepedal. These tangible signs willwarn you that the adhesion betweenthe tyres and the ground hasreached its limit and enable you toadapt your driving style to suit theroad conditions.

ANTI-LOCK BRAKING SYSTEM (ABS) (continued)

If the ABS system is faulty, twopossible situations may occur:

1 - The orange warning light

illuminated on the instrumentpanel.The braking system thenoperates in the same way as avehicle not equipped with anABS system. Contact yourRenault Dealer as a matter ofurgency.

2 - The orange

warning light and thered brake circuit fault

warning light illuminated

on the fault panel.

This indicates that both thebraking system and the ABSsystem are faulty. Your vehiclebrakes may still partiallyoperate. However, it isdangerous to brake suddenlyand it is essential to stopimmediately, as soon as trafficconditions allow. Contact yourRenault Dealer as a matter ofurgency.

Operating principleThe system detects an emergencybraking situation by means of asensor which measures the speedwith which the brake pedal isdepressed. In this case, brakingassistance instantly reaches itsmaximum power and allows ABSregulation to be reached as quicklyas possible.

ABS braking is maintained as longas the brake pedal is not released.

Illumination of the hazardwarning lightsThese may illuminate in the eventof rapid deceleration.

This function is anadditional aid in the eventof critical drivingconditions to allow the

behaviour of the vehicle to beadapted to the driving conditions.

Operating principleThe system uses sensors in thewheels to constantly measure andcompare the speed of the drivewheels and prevents them spinning.

If a wheel is tending to skid, thesystem brakes automatically untilthe drive delivered becomescompatible with the level of grip.

The system also adjusts the enginespeed to the grip available under thewheels, independently of the forceapplied to the accelerator pedal.

When the function is in operation,warning light 1 flashes.

Moving off forwardsSelect position D. In the majority oftraffic conditions, you will not haveto touch your gear selector leveragain: gear changing will take placeautomatically at the right time andat the most suitable engine speedbecause the automatic system takesinto account the vehicle load androad contour and adjusts itself tothe particular driving style you havechosen.

Accelerating and overtakingFully depress the accelerator pedal(or even take your foot off theaccelerator and press it again as faras it will go).

The speed of depressing the pedalwill activate the “kickdown”switch to obtain maximumperformance.

Special circumstances• Snow position: If you are starting

off on ground where you arelikely to skid (snow, mud, etc.),press switch C. indicator light Gon the instrument panel willilluminate.

When you have started moving,deselect this position by pressingswitch C again. The indicatorlight will extinguish.

• In hilly or mountainous country:If you cannot remain in 4th gearbecause of the road surface andthe number of bends, we wouldadvise you to move the selector tothe D3 position (by pressingbutton B when the selector leveris in D position) or even 2 (2ndgear hold), which will preventgear changing to speeds higherthan the one selected. Likewise, ifposition 1 is selected, the vehiclewill remain in 1st gear and goodengine braking is retained.

If you are travelling downhill for along way, we would advise you toplace the lever in D3 or 2 hold(even 1 hold) to obtain the mostefficient engine braking and torelieve the brakes.

• In cold weather, start the engineand wait a few seconds beforemoving the selector lever fromposition P or N and engaging it inD or R to prevent the enginestalling.

Stopping the vehicleWhen the vehicle is stationary,keeping your foot on the brakepedal, move the lever to position P(park): the gearbox is in neutral andthe drive wheels are mechanicallylocked by the transmission.

Apply the handbrake.

position, even though you arepressing down the brake pedal,the lever can be releasedmanually.

In very hot weather or when thevehicle has been parked in the sun,open the doors for a few moments tolet the hot air escape before startingthe engine.

Use the Isolation of the passengercompartment function E to lowerthe temperature as quickly aspossible to the required level.Switch off the air recirculationfunction once a comfortable levelhas been reached.

When the air conditioning isoperating, all the windows must beclosed to give the best efficiency.

If there is an operating fault, contactyour Renault Dealer.

the key in the ignition. With thekey in the ignition it would bepossible to operate the sunroofand there is a risk that the childmay be seriously injured (bytrapping his or her neck, arm,hand, etc.).

With the ignition on:• To tilt the sunroof- Opening: Pull screen 1 back and

then tilt switch 2 towards the frontand keep it depressed until therequired tilt angle is obtained.

- Closing: Tilt switch 2 backwardsthen move the screen 1 back to itsoriginal position.

• To slide the sunroof- Opening: Tilt switch 2 backwards

and keep it depressed until thesunroof is open to the requiredamount. Screen 1 is drawn back atthe same time.

- Closing: Tilt switch 2 forwardsand draw screen 1 back to itsoriginal position.

• Ensure the sunroof is properlyclosed before leaving yourvehicle.

• Clean the seal every threemonths using productsselected by Renault'sTechnical Department.

• Do not open the sunroofimmediately after the vehiclehas been in the rain or afteryour car has been washed.

ROOF BARS - ESTATE VERSION

For vehicles with trim strips on theroof, each trim strip has three flaps.These flaps cover the mountingpoints for the roof rack bars.

A cover 1 is fitted over each of theseflaps.

Access to mounting points A,B, CPress cover 1 and then slide it in thedirection of the arrows 2 which aremarked on the cover.

Max. permissible load on roof rack: Refer to the information on weights insection 6.Please refer to the manufacturer’s instructions on how to fit and use thebars.Please keep these instructions with the rest of the vehicle documentation.

The roof bars must neverbe mounted in position Band C. They must bemounted in position Aand B or A and C.

Lift the bonnet, release stay 4 fromits holder 3 and, for your own safety,it is very important to fix it intoretainer 5 in the bonnet.

To close the bonnet, refit stay 4 in itsholder 3, grip the bonnet in themiddle and lower it down to 8inches (20 cm) above the closedposition, then release. It will lockautomatically under its own weight.

Ensure it is correctlylocked.

Any operation on, ormodification to, the fuelsupply system (computers,wiring, fuel circuit, injector,

protective covers, etc.) is strictlyforbidden (except for qualified stafffrom the Renault network) due tothe safety risks it may entail.

Before closing the bonnet, ensurenothing has been left in the enginecompartment.


4.04

ENGINE OIL LEVELIt is normal for an engine to use oilfor lubrication and cooling ofmoving parts and it is sometimesnecessary to top up the levelbetween oil changes.

However, consult your RenaultDealer if more than 0.5 litre is beingconsumed every 625 miles(1000 km) after the running inperiod.

Oil change frequency: Check the oillevel from time to time andcertainly before any long journey,to avoid the risk of damaging yourengine.

Reading the oil levelThe car must be parked on levelground and the engine should havebeen switched off for some timebeforehand to obtain an accuratereading.

The oil level can be read:- on the instrument panel;- using the dipstick.

Reading the level on the instrumentpanelWhen ignition has been switchedon for approximately 30 seconds:- if the level is correct, the display

will show the “oil ok”: message 1

Special note: To gain a moreprecise indication of the level,press the trip mileage reset buttonor the information scroll button onthe onboard computer within30 seconds.

The squares which appear on thedisplay indicate the level. Thenumber of squares displayedreduces as the oil level drops andthey are replaced by a dash: displaymessage 2.

To move to onboard computerreading, press the button again.

- When the minimum oil level isreached, the dashes and the word“Oil” flash and the word “OK”disappears (display message 3)

and the warning light

illuminates on the instrumentpanel.

It is vital to top up the oil as soonas possible.

Reading the level using the dipstick- Take out the dipstick.- Wipe the dipstick using a clean,

lint-free cloth.- Push the dipstick in as far as it will

go. (For vehicles equipped with acap-type dipstick C, screw in thecap as far as it will go.)

- Take out the dipstick again.- Read the oil level again. It should

never fall below the minimum oillevel A or exceed the maximumoil level B. Take care when working

under the bonnet as theengine cooling fan may cutin at any moment.

FILTERS BATTERYThe filter components (air filter,particle filter, diesel filter, etc.)should be replaced during themaintenance operations carried outon your vehicle.

Frequency for replacing filtercomponents: see the Servicingbooklet for your vehicle.

The battery does not need servicing.Never open the cover 2.

Never use the free space in theengine compartment for storage(rags, canisters).

Take care when movingthe battery since itcontains sulphuric acidwhich must not come

into contact with the eyes orskin. If it should, wash theaffected area with plenty of coldwater.Keep all flames, red-hot objectsand sparks away from the batteryas there is a risk of explosion.


4.13

BODYWORK MAINTENANCEProtection against the action ofcorrosive agentsAlthough your car has been treatedwith very effective anti-corrosionproducts, it nevertheless remainssubject to the action of:

• Corrosives in the atmosphere- Atmospheric pollution (built-up

and industrial areas).- Saline atmosphere (near the sea,

particularly in hot weather).- Seasonal and humid climatic

conditions, especially road saltin winter.

• Abrasives

Wind-carried dust and sand,mud, road grit thrown up by othervehicles.

• Minor impacts

A minimum amount of protection isnecessary to guard your car againstsuch risks so as not to lose thebenefit of these developments.

What you should not do• Wash the vehicle in bright

sunlight or freezing temperatures.

• Scrape off mud or dirt withoutpre-wetting.

• Allow external dirt toaccumulate.

• Allow rust to form followingminor impacts.

• Use solvents not approved byRenault's Technical Departmentto remove spots as this coulddamage the paintwork.

• Drive frequently in snow ormuddy conditions withoutperiodically washing the car,particularly under the wheelarches and body.

• Degrease or clean mechanicalcomponents (e.g. enginecompartment), underneath thebodywork, parts with hinges (e.g.inside the fuel tank flap) andpainted plastic external fittings(e.g. bumpers) using highpressurecleaning apparatus or by sprayingon products not approved byRenault’s Technical Departmentas this could give rise to corrosionor incorrect operation.

What you should do• Wash your car frequently,

preferably using Renault'srecommended cleaning productsand use a high-pressure jet torinse off the underside of the carand the wheel arches in particularto get rid of:- Spots of tree resin and industrial

grime.- Bird droppings which contain

chemical products whichrapidly discolour paintworkand may even cause the paint topeel off: the vehicle must bewashed immediately to removethese marks since it isimpossible to remove them bypolishing.

- Salt deposited in the wheelarches and underneath the bodyafter driving in areas where theroads are chemically treated.

- Mud in the wheel arches andunder the body which formsdamp patches.

• Keep well away from the vehiclein front when driving on freshlylaid surfaces to prevent paintdamage.

• Repair, or have repaired quicklypatches where the paint has beendamaged to prevent corrosionspreading.

• If your vehicle is protected by theRenault anti-corrosion warranty,remember to visit the body shopperiodically. Consult theanti-corrosion booklet.

• Respect local regulations aboutwashing vehicles (e.g. do notwash your vehicle on a publichighway).

• Check the fixing of externalaccessories, additional drivinglights, exterior rear view mirrors,etc. and attach the windscreenwiper arms and radio aerial withadhesive tape before entering arevolving brush type car wash.

If your vehicle has a car phone,remove the aerial.

• If mechanical components haveto be cleaned, their protectionmust be reapplied by spraying onproducts approved by Renault’sTechnical Department.

4.15

MAINTAINING INTERIOR TRIMWhatever type of stain is on thetrim, use soapy water (if necessary,with warm water) based on:• natural soap,• washing up liquid (with one part

washing up liquid to 200 parts ofwater).

Rinse off with a soft, damp cloth.

Special instructions• Glass instrument panel (e.g.

instrument display, clock,exterior temperature display,radio display).Use a soft cloth (or cotton wool).

If this does not clean the glass, usea soft cloth which has beenslightly moistened with soapywater and then wipe clean with adamp soft cloth.

Finally, carefully dry off with asoft, dry cloth.

Cleaning products containingalcohol are not to be used.

• Seat beltsThese must be kept clean.

Use products selected by ourTechnical Department or warmsoapy water using a sponge anddry off with a dry cloth.

Do not use cleaning agents or dyes.

What to avoid:It is highly inadvisable to use a highpressure cleaning jet or spray jetinside the passenger compartment:used carelessly, it could damage theelectrical and electroniccomponents in the vehicle, amongstother detrimental effects.

To refit, reclip the embellisherensuring valve 2 is correctlylocated.

5.07

CHANGING A WHEEL

Park your vehicle on firm,flat ground (if necessary,placing a plank under thebase of the jack).

Switch on the hazard warninglights.Apply the handbrake and engage agear (first or reverse or P on anautomatic gearbox).Ask all the passengers to get out ofthe vehicle and keep them awayfrom moving traffic.

• If necessary, remove the wheelembellisher.

• Use the wheelbrace 1 to loosenthe wheel bolts slightly. Fit it sothat you press downwards andnot upwards.

• Offer up the jack horizontally, thejack head must be slidunderneath the jacking point 2under the body, nearest the wheelconcerned.

• Screw up the jack by hand at firstto align the base plate (whichshould be inclined furtherinwards than the jack head). Use apiece of wood under the baseplate if on soft ground.

• Insert the end of the wheelbrace 4into the jack 3 and turn a fewtimes to lift the wheel off theground.

• Remove the bolts.

• Take off the wheel.

• Position the spare wheel on thecentral hub and turn it to locatethe mounting holes in the wheeland the hub.

• Tighten the bolts and lower thejack.

• Tighten the bolts fully when thewheel is on the ground.

If you have a puncture,replace the wheel as soonas possible.A tyre which has been

punctured should always beinspected (and repaired ifpossible) by a specialist.

5.08

TYRESTyre safety - road wheelsThe tyres are the only contactbetween the vehicle and the road, soit is essential to keep them in goodcondition.

You must make sure that your tyresconform to local road regulations.

When they need to bereplaced, only tyres ofthe same make,dimension, type and

profile should be used.

When fitting tyres to the car,they should either be identical tothose fitted originally orconform to those recommendedby your Renault Dealer.

Maintaining the tyresThe tyres must be in good conditionand the tread form must havesufficient depth; tyres approved byRenault's Technical Departmenthave wear warning strips 1 whichare risers moulded into the tread atseveral points.

When the tread has worn down tothe level of these risers, they may beseen 2. The tyre concerned mustthen be changed as only about1.6 mm of tread rubber remains; thisis insufficient for maintaining agood grip on wet roads.

Incidents which occur whendriving, such as striking the kerb,may damage the tyres and couldlead to misalignment of the frontaxle geometry.

An overloaded car, long journeys bymotorway, particularly in very hotweather, or continual driving onpoorly surfaced minor roads willlead to more rapid tyre wear andaffect safety.


5.09

TYRES (safety)

Tyre inflation pressuresTyre inflation pressures must beadhered to. (Remember to check theemergency spare wheel at the sametime.) Inflation pressures must bechecked at least once a month andalways before a long journey. (Referto the section on “Tyre inflationpressures”.)

Incorrect tyre pressureslead to abnormal tyrewear and unusually hotrunning. Factors which

may seriously affect safety andlead to:- poor roadholding- possibility of blow-outs or of

throwing a tread at high speed.

Inflation pressures depend onthe load and the driving speed.Adjust the pressures accordingto the conditions of use. (Refer tothe section on tyre inflationpressures.)

Inflation pressures should bechecked when the tyres are cold;ignore higher pressures which maybe reached in hot weather orfollowing a fast journey.

If tyre inflation pressures cannot bechecked when the tyres are cold,take into account an increase of 0.2to 0.3 bar.

Never deflate a hot tyre.

Note: A label (depending oncountry or version) stuck on theedge or frame of the driver’s doorgives the recommended tyreinflation pressures.

Replacing tyres

For safety reasons, thisoperation must only becarried out by aspecialist.

Fitting different tyres maychange your vehicle as follows:- It may mean that your vehicle

no longer conforms to currentregulations.

- It may change the way ithandles when cornering.

- It may cause the steering to beheavy.

- It may cause tyre noise.- It may affect the use of chains.

Changing wheels aroundThis practice is not recommended.

Emergency spare wheelRefer to the information on theemergency spare wheel andinstructions on how to change awheel in section 5.

Use in winter• Chains

For safety reasons, fitting chainsto the rear axle is absolutelyforbidden.

If tyres are fitted which are largerthan those fitted to the vehicleoriginally, it will be impossible tofit chains.

Chains can only be fittedin conjunction with tyresof an identical size tothose fitted to your

vehicle originally.

Special point for 16-valveversionThis vehicle may be equippedwith four wheels which cannotbe fitted with chains.If you wish to use chains, youmust use special equipment.Consult your Renault Dealer.

• “Snow” or winter tyresWe would recommend that thesebe fitted to all four wheels toensure that your vehicle retainsmaximum road holding.

Note: We would point out thatthese tyres may sometimes have:- A specific direction of travel.- A maximum speed which may

be lower than the maximumspeed of your vehicle.

• Studded tyresThis type of equipment may onlybe used for a limited period andas laid down by local legislation.

It is necessary to keep to the speedspecified by current legislation.

As a minimum, these tyres may befitted to the two front axle wheels.

In all cases, we would recommendthat you consult your RenaultDealer who will be able to adviseyou on the choice of equipmentwhich is most suitable for yourvehicle.

FUSES

Fuse box 1If an incident occurs in an electricalcomponent, check first of all thatthe fuses are sound. Also make surethat the faulty component iscorrectly connected. If a shortcircuit occurs, unscrew one of thewing nuts on the battery posts toisolate the battery.

Open the cover 2 (under the steeringwheel).

To identify the fuses, refer to label 4(shown on the page opposite).

It is advisable not to use the freefuse locations.

Check the fuse inquestion and replace it,if necessary, with a fusewhich must be of the

same rating as the original fuse.

If a fuse is fitted where the ratingis too high, it may cause theelectrical circuit to overheat (riskof fire) in the event of an item ofequipment using an excessiveamount of current.

To avoid all risk of sparks- Ensure the “accessories” are

disconnected before disconnectingor reconnecting the battery.

- Do not place metal objects on thebattery to avoid creating a shortcircuit between the terminals.

Take care when moving thebattery as it containssulphuric acid which mustnot come into contact with

the eyes or skin. Connecting a battery chargerBoth battery leads must bedisconnected (engine switched off).

Do not disconnect the battery whenthe engine is running. Follow theinstructions for use given by themanufacturer of the battery chargeryou are using.

Only a well-charged andwell-maintained battery will have along and useful life and enable youto start the car’s engine normally.

The battery must be kept clean anddry.

Have the battery's charge statuschecked regularly:• especially if you use your vehicle

for short journeys or for frequentdriving in town.

• When the external temperaturedrops (in winter), the chargedeclines. In winter, only use thoseelectrical consumers which arereally necessary.

• Finally, you should understandthat the charge decreasesnaturally as a result of certainpermanent consumers such as:the clock, after sales accessories,etc.

When a large number of accessoriesare fitted to the vehicle, have themconnected to + after ignition. In thiscase, it is advisable to have yourvehicle fitted with a battery whichhas an increased nominal capacity.Consult your RENAULT Dealer.

If your vehicle is to be left stationaryfor a relatively long time,disconnect the battery or have itrecharged regularly, in particularduring cold weather. Theequipment with a memory, radioand trip computer will then have tobe reprogrammed. The battery mustbe stored in a cool dry place,protected from frost.

Specific procedures maybe required to chargesome batteries. Consultyour Renault Dealer.

Avoid all risk of sparks whichmay cause an immediateexplosion and charge the batteryin a well-ventilated area. Risk ofserious injury.

Starting the vehicle using thebattery from another vehicleProceed as follows when startingyour vehicle from another vehicle’sbattery:Obtain suitable jump leads (with alarge cross section) from a RenaultDealer or, if you already have jumpleads, ensure that they are in perfectcondition.

The two batteries must have anidentical nominal voltage: 12 volts.The battery supplying the currentshould have a capacity (amp-hours,Ah) which is at least the same asthat of the discharged battery.

An iced-up battery must be thawedout before current is supplied to it.

Ensure that there is no risk ofcontact between the two vehicles(risk of short circuiting when thepositive terminals are connected)and that the discharged battery isproperly connected.Switch off your vehicle ignition.

Start the engine of the vehiclesupplying the current and run it atan average speed.

Secure the positive cable (+) A tothe (+) terminal 1 of the dischargedbattery, then to (+) terminal 2 of thebattery supplying the current.

Secure the negative cable (–) B tothe (–) terminal 3 of the batterysupplying the current and then tothe (–) terminal 4 of the dischargedbattery.

Check that there is no contactbetween cables A and B and thatcable A (+) is not touching anymetal parts on the vehiclesupplying the current.

Start the engine as you wouldnormally. As soon as it starts,disconnect cables A and B inreverse order (4-3-2-1).

TOWING (breakdown)

The steering wheel must beunlocked and the ignition key mustbe in position “M” (ignition “on”) toprovide stop lights and directionindicators on the towed car. Thetowed vehicle lights must beswitched on at night.

You must observe the towingregulations which apply in thecountry in which you are driving:do not exceed the towing weight foryour vehicle. Consult your RenaultDealer.

Only use the front 1 and rear 3 or 4towing points (never use the driveshafts). These towing points mayonly be used for traction: never usethem for lifting the vehicle directlyor indirectly.

Exceptional circumstancesYou may tow the vehicle with allfour wheels on the ground using thetowing point under the followingconditions: Maximum speed 25mph (40 km/h) for a maximumdistance of 30 miles (50 km). The selector lever must be in

neutral (position N).If the lever becomes jammed in Pposition, even though you arepressing down the brake pedal, thelever can be released manually. Todo this, unclip cover B. Press onboth the raised part C and button Aat the same time to move the leverfrom position P.

SYSTEM FOR CUTTING OFF THE FUEL SUPPLY IN THE EVENT OF A SEVERE IMPACTYour vehicle may be equipped witha system for cutting off the fuelsupply in the event of a severeimpact.

This system is planned to disableand thus isolate the fuel supplysystem if a severe impact occurs.

Following an impact, the systemcan be enabled but only after ithas been inspected by a qualifiedperson from the Renault networkwho must ensure that:• the vehicle can be driven;• there is no smell of fuel;• and that the fuel system is not

leaking.

Enabling the systemIf the conditions for restarting thefuel supply system are met (seebox), it is only necessary to pressbutton 1 to enable the system.


5.40

OPERATING INCIDENTSYour car should not be affected by incidents likely to keep it off the road for long if you have followed the RenaultServicing Programme regularly.

The following hints will enable you to get going again quickly, albeit temporarily. For reasons of safety you shouldalways consult a Renault Dealer as soon as you can.

• There is no response, the warninglights fail to illuminate and the starterdoes not turn.

Radiator: Never fill a hot radiator with cold coolant if a considerable quantity has been lost. After any operationon the vehicle which has involved even partial draining of the cooling system, it must be refilled with a newmixture prepared in the correct proportions. Reminder: only products approved by Renault's TechnicalDepartment may be used for this purpose.

Towing weight (towing a caravan, boat, etc.).- It is important to comply with the towing weights, governed by local legislation in each country and, in particular, laid down in the Road

Traffic Regulations. Consult your Renault Dealer about any attachments. Under no circumstances may the total train weight (= max.permissible all-up weight and weight towed) be exceeded.

- If your vehicle is already used at full load (max. permissible all-up weight), the maximum speed must be limited to 60 mph (100 km/h)and the tyre inflation pressure increased by 0.2 bar.

- The engine output and climbing capability are reduced with altitude. We recommend that the maximum load be reduced by 10% at analtitude of 1000 metres and by an additional 10% for each 1000 metres thereafter.
