Muromachi Period…
The Muromachi period, also known as the Muromachi era, is a of phase Japanese history running from 1337 to 1573. This was the era when members of the Ashikaga family occupied the position of shogun. This period witnessed great cultural growth, particulary under the influence of Zen Buddhism. The uniquely Japanese arts of the tea ceremony, flower arranging, and no drama were developed, while the Sung style of ink painting reached its height.

Illustration of Uga Benzaiten – enjoyed high popularity in Japan in the Muromachi period and was sometimes accompanied by her fifteen attendants –. The present scroll is unique in its iconographic complexity, as it does not only show the standard grouping of Uga Benzaiten and her helpers, but also other accompanying gods such as Bishamonten and Daikokuten and the holy beings, whose identification is yet to be determined.
