REMOTE SENSING Slide 2 Remote Sensing vs. Ground Truthing Remote sensingRemote sensing = Taking data about an area from far away. Ground truthingGround truthing = Taking data about an area while at the area. WHY ARE BOTH NECESSARY? Slide 3 HOW DO SATELLITES WORK 1.FIRST DATA FROM THE SATELLITE IS SENT TO A COMPUTER IN THE FORM OF ONES AND ZEROES. 2.THEN THOSE NUMBERS ARE TURNED INTO A TRUE IMAGE OF THE AREA TRUE COLOR IMAGE OR SENSORS MAY BE USED TO SHOW DIFFERENT THINGS FALSE COLOR IMAGE Slide 4 12 C B A 3 HOW DO SATELLITES WORK Slide 5 ? Slide 6 AERIAL PHOTO Slide 7 SATELLITE TRUE COLOR IMAGEFALSE COLOR IMAGE Slide 8 EMITTED VS REFLECTED EMITTED RADIATION everything gives off radiation even when its dark REFLECTED RADIATION things reflect light in different ways Slide 9 EMITTED COMPUTER camera Slide 10 REFLECTED COMPUTER camera Slide 11 Byrd Glacier, Antarctica Acquisition Date: Jan 11, 2000 Path/Row: 44/118 Lat/Long: -80.022/168.637 Byrd Glacier is a 15 mile wide, 100 mile long, rock-floored ice stream located in southern Antarctica. This long, unique ice feature plunges through a deep valley in the Transatlantic Mountains and into the Ross Ice Shelf. This ice stream speeds as a river of ice at a rate of one half mile per year.
