Questions Why do some volcanoes explode? In this Mystery, students will

investigate how differences in lava types explain differences in the

shape and eruption patterns among volcanoes. In the activity, Bubble

Trouble, students compare two different types of "lava" -- thin and

thick. They use this information to figure out why volcanoes have

different shapes and how the type of lava explains why some volcanoes

explode.

Activity 1. This week in science we will continue our study of volcanoes.

Your child will learn about different kinds of volcanoes and how

the thickness of the lava can explain the shape and eruption

pattern of the volcanoes. Using lava made out of water and

flour, they will test how different lavas create different shapes

and trap gases differently. We will solve the mystery, “Why do

some volcanoes explode?”

Page 2: Remote Learning Lessons for Grade: Science Grade 4 Week 6 ... · This week in science we will continue our study of volcanoes. Your child will learn about different kinds of volcanoes

2. You can support this week’s learning by watching this high

definition video of lava flowing in Hawaii with your child:

http://safeYouTube.net/w/iel. See if you can figure out the

shape of the volcano that’s producing the lava. (hint: the lava is

pretty thin so it doesn’t trap the gas very well.) Good luck!

3. Watch mystery and answer questions as you go.

4. Experiment: Do the experiment taking pictures as you go if you

have the equipment. If you need to improvise please do. You

need: table covering (trash bag), clear plastic cups, flour,

measuring cups, paper plates, plastic spoons, plastic straws,

ziplock bag (gallon), handouts, end-of-mystery assessment

5. You will need access to water for this activity.

6. Prepare the “Lava”

• To prepare the “lava,” you will need water, flour, a 1-

gallon Ziploc bag (or large mixing bowl), measuring cups,

scissors, and (optionally) red food coloring.

• For thin lava, use plain water.

• You can optionally add a drop or two of red food coloring

to make it look more like lava. A few cups of water will be

enough for about 30 students (15 pairs).

• To make thick lava, mix up the flour with water and

(optionally) red food coloring.

7. Watch this video to see how we mix up a batch in a plastic

Ziploc bag without making a mess. You can also mix your lava in a

mixing bowl. This should make enough thick lava for about 30

students (15 pairs).

8. Fill Cups with “Lava”

9. Fill half of the cups about halfway with the “thin lava.” Fill the

other half of the cups about halfway with the “thick lava.”

10. Follow the mystery with the instructions of the activity.

11. Complete end-of-mystery assessment. Tasks: Wednesday Must Do

Video StemScopes: Content Connections Video-Tree Roots.

Questions How do you know how long a tree has grown by its roots?

Activity 1. Log onto StemScopes through the Student Applications.

2. Go to Assignments.

3. Click on Content Connections Video-Night and Day.

4. Watch video and pause when it asks you questions and discuss

the answers.

5. Watch video answering questions as you go.

6. Use video to answer questions.

7. When you finish turn in.

These are the review challenge assignments for this week. Go to STEMscopes and

complete the questions on the following assignments. Let's see how many shout outs I

can give this week. Send me a message when you are finished. If you think you have

finished already check to make sure I have not returned anything to you.

1. Content Connections Video-What Shapes the Coast?

2. Reading Science B-Water: One of Earth’s Most Powerful Forces

3. Multiple Choice Assessment – Changing Land using STEMscopedia for reference

4. Concept Attainment quiz-Changing Land using STEMscopedia for reference

I have posted a list of websites on the Alice B. Beal Class Dojo page. Please choose

activities that your child would like to explore. Please pick an activity from the list to

do with your scientist each day that you don’t do an assignment. Have fun and stay

curious.
